00:17:01 I think we'd like to give a special thanks to the people
00:17:04 who've really helped make this festival possible.

00:19:57 The Buddha's bathing ceremony marquee right here.
00:20:01 And once again, my name is Jonathan.
00:20:03 I'm here with the lovely Daimi.
00:20:05 Daimi, are you going to tell us a little bit about the bathing Buddha ceremony?
00:20:11 Yes, so Buddhists all over the world celebrate Buddha's birthday
00:20:15 by the act of bathing the little Buddha over here with fragrant water.
00:20:20 And it is also a symbol of inner purification.
00:20:23 So shall we do a little demonstration?
00:20:26 Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:27 So Daimi is going to show a little demonstration of bathing the Buddha.
00:20:30 So with the first ladle,
00:20:35 we bathe the Buddha's left shoulder. We eliminate all evil thoughts.
00:20:41 And with the second wash over the right shoulder,
00:20:45 may we cultivate good deeds.
00:20:48 And finally with the third wash, may we help save all living beings.
00:20:54 And normally after that, we give a hug to the little Buddha.
00:20:59 And then if you would like to make a donation, you can also feel free to do so.
00:21:04 So be sure to come by the bathing Buddha marquee when you have a chance.
00:21:09 It's just right across from the main stage.
00:21:11 And I hope you all enjoy the Buddha's birthday festival today. Thank you.
00:21:16 Thank you, Jonathan. And thank you, Daimi.
00:21:19 What is our next performance today?
00:21:22 So Nina, the next performance we have is from the Sydney Guiyun Yaxuan Guzheng Arts Academy.
00:21:28 Guzheng, interesting.
00:21:29 Yes, the Guzheng is an ancient oriental musical instrument.
00:21:34 And the Sydney Guiyun Yaxuan Guzheng Arts Academy was founded in 2015.
00:21:40 They have performed in many venues such as the Sydney Opera House and other major cultural festivals.
00:21:45 That's very impressive, including our multicultural performance today.
00:21:50 Yes, that is correct.
00:21:51 How many songs are they going to perform today?
00:21:53 So they are going to perform two different songs.
00:21:56 And what are the names?
00:21:58 So the first one is "Flourishing of Age" and "The Sun Quan, The Emperor".
00:22:04 So we can see they are still set up today.
00:22:07 So could you please tell me a little bit about our SDG well-being?
00:22:16 So the SDG will be living under the light of Buddha.
00:22:20 So during the baby blessing ceremony, Venerable of Nantien Temple will bless children aged 5 years and under
00:22:30 so that they may live a happy and fulfilled life under the protection and guidance of Buddha and Bodhisattva.
00:22:37 This is done in the hope that the wisdom and compassion of Buddha and Bodhisattva
00:22:42 will guide the little ones throughout their life.
00:22:45 So please join us tomorrow where the Venerables will bless children under the protection.
00:22:51 And we are ready to enjoy the performance by the Guzhen players.
00:22:58 Please welcome them again.
00:23:00 The performance we just witnessed is celebrating the flourishing age.
00:23:08 And then the next one coming up is from the period of the Romance of Three Kingdoms.
00:23:16 The Sydney Gu Yun, Yaxuan Guzhen Art Academy has been performing in various locations
00:23:24 including the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Town Hall and other major cultural festivals.

01:08:09 Here is a philosophy of learning
01:08:23 and a philosophy of living your life.
01:08:25 It's certainly not about religion.
01:08:28 We can see we're inspired by the connections with Buddhism,
01:08:32 but we're not trying to have them pretty far reach across the places.
01:08:38 I think people also think that because we're fairly small,
01:08:41 we're fairly weak, because they believe in the philosophy of Nantian.
01:08:45 The education that we're looking to do is modern,
01:08:49 is connected with our community.

01:29:57 Boys and girls, welcome to the 2024 Buddhist Birthday and Multicultural Festival.
01:30:14 My name is David and joining me today is Nina and we're honoured to be your MCs for today's sessions of multicultural performances.
01:30:22 This year we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of this wonderful event under the theme of co-existence and co-prosperity.
01:30:30 Around 2,600 years ago on a full moon in May, Prince Siddhartha was born and later attained enlightenment and became Shakyamuni Buddha.
01:30:43 This weekend we are here together to unite multicultural and multi-faith communities to participate in this special celebration.
01:30:54 The Institute is a non-profit facility for diagnosis and treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
01:31:04 It was founded in 2002 by the UNSW School of Psychiatry, Scientia, Professor Gordon Parker and is based in Sydney, Australia.
01:31:13 Lifeline is a non-for-profit organisation that provides free 24-hour telephone crisis support services in Australia.
01:31:22 Volunteer crisis supporters provide suicidal prevention services, mental health support and emotional assistance.
01:31:29 The symbol Buddha signifies three wishes for our family, friends and society.
01:31:39 These three wishes are, may we wish everyone health and happiness, may we wish harmony for our society and nation, may we wish for world peace.
01:31:52 Thank you to all our VIPs for joining us in the bathing of the Buddha.

01:35:46 Master Seng Yuen understands the co-dependence of all of us, between ourselves, the nature and all living beings.
01:36:12 For the theme co-existence and co-dependence, what it tells us is that if we want to have a sustainable living, we need to respect and live well with one another.
01:36:32 However, if we only depend on charities like the BLIA and all charitable people, this is not enough to achieve co-dependence, co-prosperity and co-existence.
01:36:58 So the Venerable Master hopes that all of us, each and every one of us, together with our families, are like the Buddha. What does this mean? It means that everybody come forward for the co-prosperity for everyone.
01:37:12 [Chinese]
01:37:38 We know that Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Guan Yin, has many arms, thousand arms and thousand eyes. Why is this so? Because we have got so many people who needs help, one hand is not enough.
01:37:52 So I wish that everyone would come forward, be a hand, be an eye of the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, so that we could serve everyone and bring happiness to all.
01:38:03 [Chinese]
01:38:10 There are a few points that I would like to share with you, so that we could work together.
01:38:15 [Chinese]
01:38:29 So the first is to have the vow to be willing to serve, to serve humanity.
01:38:35 [Chinese]
01:38:48 So the second is to be able to serve the humanity, to do good deeds, to say good words and to have good thoughts.
01:38:57 [Chinese]
01:39:13 Third, we hope that there could be more non-profits, more charities around, so that we would be able to enhance humanity.
01:39:21 [Chinese]
01:39:33 So the BLIA, Buddhist Light International Association of Sydney, has been around for 33 years.
01:39:40 So for all the years, we have been working hard in line with the United Nations Sustainable Goals.
01:39:48 [Chinese]
01:40:00 So BLIA Sydney works together with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 3, 4, 5, 13, 14, 15 and 17.
01:40:11 [Chinese]
01:40:22 So we have been participating in a lot of events, for example, Clean Up Australia Day, to purify the environment.
01:40:30 [Chinese]
01:40:40 So we are also the second largest organization in Australia, participating in Clean Up Australia, protecting the environment.
01:40:49 [Chinese]
01:41:04 So for the past 30 years, we have also been planting trees. This is in support for the environment.
01:41:11 We hope to purify the air, we hope everyone to have a better way to live.
01:41:17 [Chinese]
01:41:31 So we have also been practicing recycling, and there is an SDG market at the back of today's park.
01:41:40 We hope that you will be able to go there and learn about SDG.
01:41:45 [Chinese]
01:42:00 The Venerable Master Hsing Yun is very kind to have set up the Hsing Yun Education Foundation.
01:42:06 He believes that by providing quality education, we will be contributing to the society.
01:42:13 [Chinese]
01:42:31 You can also participate in a plant-based diet. By participating in a plant-based diet, we are actually respecting all beings.
01:42:40 [Chinese]
01:42:51 So we could do good deeds, we could speak good words, and think good thoughts.
01:42:56 [Chinese]
01:43:04 So we know that all the teachings that the Buddha has given to us, is actually in connection with our mind, our heart.
01:43:11 [Chinese]
01:43:28 So today, while we are bathing the Buddha, we are actually telling us to purify our own minds with kind.
01:43:36 [Chinese]
01:43:53 I must express my gratitude to all our benefactors, all our volunteers and everyone here.
01:43:59 Because of you, we are able to conduct this event.
01:44:03 [Chinese]
01:44:11 So we need more volunteers, we need more kind people, so that we could come together and be kind.
01:44:18 [Chinese]
01:44:30 So thank you very much. May I wish that you will be happy and healthy.
01:44:35 May your families be well and society, and there will be warm peace. All the best to you. Thank you.
01:44:42 [Drumming]
01:45:12 [Drumming]
01:45:30 [Applause]
01:45:48 Wow, what a wonderful way to start off our multicultural festival.
01:45:54 Thank you so much for this uplifting, energetic performance. Let us give them another round of applause.
01:46:01 [Applause]
01:46:10 We are all here today, gathering together to celebrate the birth... the birthday...
01:46:18 Sorry. We are all here today, gathering together to celebrate Buddha's birthday.
01:46:24 And one of the common practices is to bathe Prince Siddhartha.
01:46:30 And guess what? Now it's lunchtime. Have you had lunch today?
01:46:34 You know what, Nina? I have not. Do you have any suggestions for me?
01:46:39 [Music]
01:46:45 Starting from digging. Right, left. Twice, right.

01:47:45 Now just smile at me. Face me.
01:47:48 Left, right, left, right.
01:47:53 Step. Push.
01:48:01 Yeah, that's it. Just repeat this sequence.
01:48:06 That's it. Push. Twice. Open.
