00:11The plans come out of the consultation we did in developing our strategic plan,
00:15Making a Better Burnie 2044.
00:17The community really clearly communicated to us that we needed to upgrade our CBD.
00:22It wasn't really at the standard that people expect.
00:25So we've gone away to develop this plan to provide the detail,
00:29the blueprint if you like, for council and also for private developers
00:32around how we see the city being upgraded and developed over the next 10-20 years.
00:37I guess the conversation really started as part of the strategy process with community
00:41and coming out of that council's picked that up.
00:43We've engaged consultants to work with us around defining how we actually do upgrade the urban area within the CBD
00:53and obviously it's really important to continue to have conversation with community about this
00:57because at the end of the day it's their CBD so what we do has to make sense and resonate with them.
01:03There are a range of concerns expressed about the way the CBD is currently working,
01:08ranging from people not feeling safe, perhaps not being pedestrian friendly,
01:14issues around lighting and amenity, just feeling a little bit tired and dirty
01:19and not bright, not colourful, lack of art.
01:23So these were the concerns that came through from the community
01:27and obviously the urban plan is designed to address those and as I say provide a plan for the future
01:33so that as we work to upgrade the CBD over the next 20-40 years there's a consistency to it
01:38but it also addresses the issues that the community has raised with us.
01:41The end result we hope is a vibrant CBD that is used by people to work, to live, to shop, to recreate, to play.
01:53The nature of city centres is changing and we need to reflect that in the plan
01:58and we need to make it the sort of place that people come for those variety of reasons
02:02and then want to spend time in because it's actually just a good place to be.
