00:00A pre-budget power play.
00:04This is the biggest contribution a state has ever made to support households with their
00:10energy bills.
00:11It will mean a lot to struggling Queenslanders at the moment.
00:15From July the 1st, every Queensland household will receive a $1,000 rebate, almost double
00:20the discount handed out this financial year.
00:24Eligible pensioners and concession card holders will get a further $370.
00:28You know Queenslanders are doing it tough.
00:30Usually a measure that's saved for the state budget in June, the government's brought it
00:34forward, introducing a special bill to parliament to deliver the relief in time.
00:39The cost of living crisis makes it too urgent to wait for the budget.
00:43But did the latest gloomy polling results have anything to do with the timing?
00:48As you all know, I've been talking about a measure like this for months now.
00:53Of course it is a vote buying exercise.
00:56The timing is not a coincidence.
00:59Economists ignore elections.
01:02The point is, you know, this will help but it won't help as much as people think because
01:08the prices of other stuff will go up.
01:10The Treasurer disagrees.
01:12These sorts of rebates are disinflationary.
01:16The opposition supports the rebates but has questions about Queensland's wholesale power
01:20prices.
01:21An average of $118 per megawatt hour in the first three months of this year, while the
01:27rest of the country saw prices fall to $76.
01:29So you can pick and choose wholesale prices at any point in time to try to make a point.
01:37What matters is what it says on people's power bills.
01:41An energy rebate was always expected in the June budget.
01:44But the decision to unveil it now, five weeks beforehand, looks like a strategy to reclaim
01:50the agenda and push cost of living help.
01:53In an election year, every month counts.
01:55Well you're never going to say no to money.
01:58Any amount is good.
01:59There's a monopoly on the retail of electricity in this area.
02:05I think it's good for people, especially with how many people I've seen with really high
02:12electricity bills.
