Potting up calendula, marigold and night scented phlox in a container.
Transcript
00:00Hello, well today I'm potting up some flower arrangements from the seedlings I've been
00:15growing for the last two months and they'll be four different types of flowers I've already
00:22just done one there and I'll just show you up close the type of flowers we're growing
00:29I'm planning to put together in the pot it's a beautiful sunny day here in Ireland and
00:36in spring that means one thing, frosty nights so we've been bringing the plants inside by
00:42night and bringing them back out to get the best of the sunshine in the morning so what
00:49we have here are French marigolds which I've been growing from seed and they've come up
00:56really well so I'll take the two biggest and plant them into this pot here along with
01:07calendula pot marigold which is a completely different species but in our part of the world
01:15people refer to these as marigolds as well and they are a bright orange flower the other
01:21marigolds will be pinstriped red and yellow flower and then as well as that I have some
01:31night scented phlox which are a white flower that opens at night and releases a sweet candy
01:39like scent so I'm going to plant a few of them and they're already starting to branch
01:44out so I'll just show you the roots on this one first just tap the bottom this is for
01:53some reason double potted you can see there there's some fine root very fine roots but
02:09right down to the bottom there so these are ripe for plant replanting let's put them there
02:15and bring it over here and I'm going to plant may have said there are four of these at the front
02:24these come on very well these are about two months old so these were one of the first
02:38packets of seeds that I started I got loads of plants out of them what I'm hoping for with
02:56using flower pots is a lot of color in the garden it's quite nice to see how things look
03:06in terms of pairing plants whenever you do it this way so there's three and four
03:15that's the fourth one this has got a really big root ball on it here so these will really
03:26benefit now from having that extra room to grow and they should branch out and fill up the pot
03:31nicely I've a bit too much compost in here so I'm just going to throw some under another pot
03:36you want to leave some room for water if you're new to gardening because if you fill it right up
03:46the water will just run off and the warmer summer months and then your plants aren't getting the
03:54water that they need so after that then I'm going to have two of these two strongest looking ones
04:04these are in about six seven weeks
04:12so I'm going to do these towards the back here
04:35and I like using white flowers like these night santa flocks in the garden because it makes the
04:46colors pop of the other plants and then finally we have the calendula these are edible so as the
05:00flowers on them and put them in salads and stuff I'm planning to try that out later in the summer
05:07you can see they're a well-developed root ball that I'm just going to tease out a little bit
05:14I don't want to damage them but just to help them on their way they grow downwards and then this
05:22will go at the back because this will be the largest of these plants there none of them are
05:26particularly tall a bit more deeper I just want to make sure the stems are supported as well so
05:39you should have left a bit more room because obviously you have the compost that they've
05:48been growing on to they factor in when you're potting up so that is that now and I'm gonna
06:00leave this in a small greenhouse behind me at night see how it fares so that's that one done
06:07so that's two done and it just frees up a few smaller pots as well for newer seedlings coming
06:16up and you get these are good make great gifts as well for relatives or friends of anybody who's
06:28not really who likes flowers but it's not really in the garden you can just do this
06:34and bring them around to their house and they're quite low maintenance all these plants are quite
06:43maintenance so all they need is water basically you can feed them occasionally if you like but
06:49they will grow fine without any fertilizer so be interesting to see how that comes on in the next
06:54few months and one one thing they finish off actually is where did I put them I might just
07:02add a few okay there lobelia seedlings I planted a packet or half a packet of these and hundreds
07:11came up I have about a hundred in cell trays already and I just need to get these planted
07:19up now and can reuse the tray for someone else but they're all looking very healthy but they're
07:25buying for light so try and get them in before some of them die off I'm just going to grab them
07:35and little clumps because they're too fiddly to try and separate plant these around now these
07:41are a light blue variety so I'll add another pop of color and these are training so they'll come
07:48out over the side and fall down over the side and just do the other pot as well
08:11so all that means now is a good watering and it's done and this will be its permanent home
08:17for the summer I have loads more calendula and marigolds which I'm going to use as companion
08:23plants once I dig up the garden it's still a bit wet yet but we're hopefully getting some dry weather
08:29over the next week possibly get it done then and get some things in the ground over the next few
08:36weeks it's still the risk of frost it's still there so don't get too enthusiastic about that
08:45yet but it's coming in the main way so that's our time for the last frost and that is that two flower
08:59pots done from seed
