Transcript
00:00 Good morning Skagness. We are live from the storehouse in Skagness and this
00:09 morning we're doing something a little different. Bringing you the main topic
00:13 that is in Skagness Standard. Our edition is out today and some of the people who
00:18 will be in the news this week. I am delighted to have with me the outgoing
00:23 Mayor of Skagness, Councillor Pete Barry. Final few hours, how are you feeling?
00:30 Final few hours, I've been a little bit sad. I've enjoyed every day as for being the Mayor of Skagness.
00:37 Meeting all the different people in the community, different events I've attended to and I've been able to perform and opening new shops and things like that.
00:49 The economy back up a little bit with the people who are investing in Skagness which I can see a good future in Skagness.
00:58 There's been a lot going on hasn't there? Yes.
01:01 Now I know one of your biggest wishes was to bring the Council together and surrounding Council together to get everybody working together.
01:10 But I see you've got a copy of the Skagness Standard today and welcome to our front page headline because at the annual town meeting last week,
01:22 which is usually a meeting where people talk about their clubs and organisations, there were some angry members of the public in that audience that are upset that the grass isn't being cut.
01:36 Can you explain to people why the grass isn't being cut?
01:40 Yes. First of all, I could see that it was costing far too much for Skagness to actually do these duties and all I have thought about, I think I've been vote.
01:56 I thought to myself, well the only thing I would suggest is we hand it back to the proper authorities, which is the Lincoln County Council.
02:07 They said that's all well and good but Lincoln County Council from central government only allowed them to cut the grass three times a year.
02:21 Very good in hindsight to see this looking so nice and pretty.
02:27 Yes, because when you were making the budget it was after the 12 cuts last year. It was winter, the grass was short, wasn't it?
02:35 It was the last thing that was on people's minds because of the cost of living, everything was going up, electricity was going up.
02:43 A lot of families were worried about how they were going to feed their children. Money was on people's minds, wasn't it?
02:53 Yes, it was. It was the main item on their minds for the community of families.
02:58 This is why previously we didn't put the precept up to keep it low for the community.
03:07 I knew there was going to be suffering and that's what we did. Then they thought what way could we come back to save money?
03:15 This was one of the ideas of actually handing it back, the grass cutting that is, to the proper authorities.
03:23 People at the meeting last week were saying that you've made a mistake, that your council have made a mistake. Do you agree with them?
03:31 No, it's a yes and no, isn't it? I have lived in Skagen Est for 80 years, myself in August 1980.
03:41 I've always seen it so nicely set out but I feel that it shouldn't be left entirely to the precept or the residents to actually pay for it.
03:57 It should be done by more or less the right authorities, that's all I can see.
04:06 But I can see that the cost of living and the cost of the budget was actually going higher and higher in the council.
04:16 I can see that maybe we would probably come in with some difficulty with the finance.
04:23 It's alright saying put the precept on but the people don't want it. So we're in the big deep blue sea really.
04:32 Now our article does feature a group of 80 year olds who have taken it on themselves to cut the grass.
04:39 I mean there is issues isn't there with the public doing these jobs because of insurance and there are concerns.
04:47 It isn't something you would encourage is it?
04:49 No, I wouldn't encourage it at all. It's very nice of them to actually take it in their own hands but I can't see,
04:57 there might be some recurrence problems later if anything happened.
05:04 But in fact over the bank holiday I think it was the, they came at the wrong time into the annual meeting when they came to profess their views to me
05:17 but they've actually started cutting.
05:19 I was going to say there is some good news because they have started cutting and we did speak to Lincolnshire County Council
05:26 and they have hinted that there could be some negotiations on the deal that they've got at the minute.
05:36 So hopefully something can be worked out.
05:39 Well I hope so, I do hope so and okay it will come, I know it will, we'll get there at the end.
05:48 I know we fight for things and if we can all come together and work it together then it will be great.
05:58 Now it is your last day, how are you planning on spending it?
06:01 Oh I'm spending it with you Christine.
06:03 Thank you for that.
06:05 Again, it's been nice working with you as well throughout the year.
06:11 As I said before I lost my wife and the community has helped me to get on my feet and keep me there.
06:19 Tonight I'm going to the new Mayor's Marial Do.
06:27 You're pounding over the chain to Councillor A.B. Findlay aren't you?
06:31 Yes Councillor A.B. Findlay will be actually taking my position and I know he'll be a very successful Mayor.
06:38 What will you be telling him? What advice will you be giving him?
06:42 His advice, he always said it's going to be hard to follow you but I shall help him.
06:48 He'll be following my footsteps I hope and we can go from there.
06:51 So will you be putting your feet up tomorrow?
06:53 No, I've got other things to do. I'm actually Chairman of the Bad Dandem Zion which is our twinning association.
07:01 I'm looking forward to really getting my grips on it a little bit better and I think we will be.
07:09 We've got some new members coming in and that's what we want.
07:13 Also I'm the Vice Chairman of the Church Farm Museum so I'll be actually concentrating and putting my efforts in.
07:21 We'll still be seeing you around.
07:23 Of course we will.
07:24 Well thank you so much for joining us today.
07:26 Thank you.
07:27 Thank you.
07:28 Thank you very much.
07:29 I'll have a coffee afterwards.
07:30 Yes.
07:31 Okay I'm also joined by local entertainer D.B. Lee.
07:35 You're keeping an eye on what's going on in Skegness. I understand you've got some breaking news for us.
07:40 Yes, just to follow up on the police that five people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Skegness.
07:49 This was on the 1st of May. There is more details on this. We will bring that to everyone later on or you can check it out on the website.
08:00 Other news, unfortunately the trains are not running today in Skegness. There is a strike action and this may be until the 11th.
08:10 So check out again for more details with the online paper.
08:16 Over to you Christine.
08:18 Okay thank you. Well we have another guest today to reflect the fact that it is Mental Health Week.
08:26 So welcome, yes welcome.
08:31 Just having a bit of a change over here.
08:34 We've got Michael Lithgow here. I understand you are Skegness and District Community Collective for Mental Health.
08:43 Yes, yes I am.
08:44 Can you tell me what you do?
08:48 What I do?
08:49 Yes.
08:50 Right, so my role is to run the wellbeing hub and to look for gaps in service.
08:56 So as starting, I've only been in this position nine months, we started off with running the wellbeing hub in Skegness, opening an office and then we got another office also
09:07 so that people and professionals can come and see people while we are there.
09:11 But my job role is to look after people and help them work well and give them the information to signpost them to relevant services so that they can get the correct tools to move forward.
09:21 Mental health is having a big problem in New Chiltern isn't it?
09:25 Yes it is.
09:26 It has been noted that there is a rise. Why is that?
09:31 It's a really good question actually. I think that it's different for each individual but I think that people, as time goes on, they hit hard times and they don't know how to get out of it.
09:40 So some people stay on their own, they don't reach out to relevant services and think they can handle it and sometimes people just don't even know that we are here.
09:48 And so when people find out about us and they come in and we signpost them to relevant services or we give them the information or the tips and tools that we use to help them,
09:57 then they can, you know, this is a place as David Bruce likes to say as a lead connector, is to wait well.
10:04 So while they are waiting for the services to take them or take them over, this is a place where they can just wait well and just be until they move forward.
10:13 Now we do have a two page feature in the Skegness Standard today directing people to the services that are available.
10:24 At what point would you say, because I mean everyone has worries at the minute with the cost of living, we've just been talking about that and the storehouse has always been a hub to help people with debt and concerns and even homelessness.
10:44 At what point does that become a need for them to seek some medical help would you say?
10:52 I would always say as soon as there is an issue or a problem, always try and reach out to your GP.
10:59 Always try and speak to somebody, speak to a professional and then they will signpost you accordingly also.
11:05 The GP surgeries know about us, so if you go and check in with the GP surgeries, they will probably send you to the wellbeing hubs or because we've got the wellbeing hubs, we have Broker, we have Eve and we have the Nightlight House.
11:18 So it's a place as I said to wait well, but if they come along here and they get sent by the GP, at least they know that we're here.
11:26 But I do believe that seeking the GP first as soon as possible because people usually don't know we're here.
11:35 So hopefully it will become a practice where instead of people going to the GP, they'll come here, see us and they probably won't even need to reach out to the GP.
11:43 There are all sorts of activities as well, it's not just talking is it? So do you go on walks?
11:49 So we have a lot of group sessions, we have like a chilling chat where people just come, sit around the table, just socialising and talking is sometimes just enough to make people feel at ease, realising that they're not alone.
12:01 We have different groups, different sessions, we have arts and crafts, we have wellbeing walks, so we're working in collaboration with the co-op and we've got walks in Borough and we have walks at the Nightlight Chapel.
12:14 So it all depends on what group you attend to what you will get out of each session because every session is always different because hopefully there's always different people there.
12:21 Crafts, and I went to one of them, they have Spills Bay, people colouring in which is also good for your mental health.
12:29 Yes, we have a group called Rewind Unwind that's run by Donna and sometimes people just sit and colour, sometimes not even in talking but just sitting around the table, being with people, a face to face group session where they're just focusing on just what's on the table and then having some brews, you know, hot drinks or some biscuits or something like that and just being with people is sometimes just enough to help change.
12:55 That's it.
12:59 Okay well, in the paper we do have, as I said, a two page spread and all the information where you can seek help and a little bit about what is happening in Lincolnshire is all there.
13:12 So thank you Michael for coming along today.
13:14 It's not a problem, thank you very much.
13:16 Okay, Dee Dee, have you got any more updates?
13:19 Yes, we have, we've just had a few updates on Facebook regarding our comments from the Mayor.
13:28 The one comment is from John Hayes, he says, "Same in Chapel at the local council, put the centre of the village, only not the same." It's not much the same as anywhere else, where all the car park money go, going could by a knower, or is it down to the householders yet again to do it or is that just something he's asking?
13:56 Anna Rody said, "Maybe they are participating in No Mo May?" I'm not quite sure what that is about.
14:04 Must be like November, where nobody's shaved!
14:09 No more further updates on the rail, unfortunately there is no trains today, but we do have a wonderful bus service, so don't forget to catch the buses.
14:20 Everything is working alright on the buses. And we've got lots of car parking spaces, you can see out there. I think when I arrived this morning there were 2,000 car park spaces in Skeyness, so if you are coming you'll find somewhere there.
14:34 So moving on from mental health, it's widely known that exercise is good for you, but sometimes we go a bit too far and I have sports therapist Olivia Brown here with me, who's been putting people back together, that's overdone it, for 4 years now in Skeyness.
14:53 And you are the reigning award winner in the Skeyness Business Awards for Health and Wellbeing.
15:02 Thank you, welcome Olivia!
15:04 Thank you for having me.
15:06 Now, tell everybody a little bit about what you do.
15:08 So I specialise in injuries, so assessing people if they've got any pains or aches, we work through that first.
15:16 And then once we've decided on what we think the problem is, we can work through a treatment plan, whether it's with me or if I refer them to another person.
15:23 We then tend to do more injury rehab, I have quite a lot of treatments that I offer. So yeah, that's my main specialised thing that I do in clinic.
15:32 However, in the last 18 months I've sort of moved towards some lymphatic drainage work, I've just recently qualified as a scar practitioner, so I work with scars now as well.
15:42 So, sort of spreading my wings a little bit within clinic, so lots of different services.
15:46 Yeah, now you have got an activity for us haven't you, to see if we need to do a little bit more stretching?
15:53 Yes!
15:54 Because obviously the way I'm sorting this chair today, you know, I've got a lot of work for people sat over their computers all day, back issues and stuff.
16:07 Yeah, so I would say one of the most common complaints that I get in clinic is stiff shoulders, from slouching forward, stiff neck, poor shoulder mobility.
16:17 I don't know whether it's from COVID, everyone works at home now, or you know, just we have a lot of desk based jobs, but that seems to be my common complaint.
16:24 So I thought it would be a bit of fun today, a bit of entertainment to get people doing some stretching.
16:29 Let's get Skagness moving!
16:31 So this is a shoulder mobility test.
16:34 I'll put this down.
16:35 I'm going to just turn my back so you can see what I'm doing.
16:37 So taking one hand, we're going to take it so that we can reach between our shoulder blades.
16:41 We're going to take the other hand underneath, and we're going to try and grip together.
16:45 Okay, well I can touch on that one.
16:47 Sometimes people tend to do it one way and not another way.
16:50 You might find that one side is more uncomfortable than the other.
16:53 If I had lots of time today I would explain all the things that you're saying.
16:57 Miles out, I'm getting a saber.
16:58 Miles out, I need help.
16:59 You can do one side.
17:00 You've got it, you've got it.
17:02 Oh, very good.
17:04 Well, Diddy is a dancer, so yeah.
17:07 Oh, very good.
17:08 Yeah, and you do have an event that you want to tell us about.
17:14 Yeah, so I'm running a fundraising event for three charities, organisations that my clients have sort of picked out,
17:22 and I've picked based on clients that I'm working with.
17:25 So one of them is Caudwell Children.
17:27 They're a UK-based charity, and they support disabled children.
17:30 They provide equipment and things like that.
17:32 So I've had a couple of clients that I've had really good support from them, so I wanted to choose them as my first one.
17:38 My second one is the Steadness and District Group of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
17:44 So I have a couple of clients, again, that are within that group.
17:48 They're a really nice organisation.
17:50 They meet up regularly, and I'd like to use the funds that we raise to give them a trip out, to do something all together, something a bit more fun.
17:57 And then the final one is something I think everyone can say they've had a good experience with, which is the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance.
18:04 So they're my three organisations.
18:07 I'm going to be running the fundraiser on Saturday, the 6th of July.
18:10 It will be at the lovely Lincolnshire Coastal Cottages, so massive shout-out and thank you to them for letting me use their lovely grounds.
18:16 It will be from 9.30 in the morning until 12.
18:19 The biggest part of the event is obviously I do stretching as a side thing.
18:23 So there's a big outdoor stretch that I'm running.
18:25 All you need to do is bring a mat with you.
18:27 I do have some spare mats as well.
18:29 That will be running from 10 till 10.45, so I'm really hoping to get a massive group.
18:34 I will be doing other things, though, because I know not everyone wants to join a stretch.
18:37 I do have a cake sale.
18:39 That always gets the people involved.
18:41 I do have a cake sale, I have a raffle, a few other fitness challenges, and it would be nice just for some people to pop and say hello as well.
18:48 I have got some people from some of the charities, hopefully, coming as well, but the cake sale usually sells it.
18:54 I've had loads of people as well, being really kind, businesses in Stegnest offer prizes, gift vouchers and things for the raffle.
19:03 Some people have offered to donate cakes that they've baked and things.
19:06 So far it's going well, so I just wanted to come on and talk about my event.
19:11 Thank you for coming along. We'll make sure we get that in the paper before the event and online.
19:17 Thank you for joining us.
19:19 Tell me about what's on, what is going on in the next few days, and is it going to be sunny?
19:26 Yes, I mean the weather.
19:28 Right, okay, the weather at the moment is a little bit cloudy, but we are promised good sunny weather for the rest of this week.
19:37 It's trying to break through.
19:38 It's trying to break through.
19:40 We have rain next week, but we are promised by the Met Office we are going to have a great summer.
19:46 So don't forget your sunflower lotions and sunglasses.
19:50 Right, there will be some fog patches and mist in the morning, so take it with as it is.
19:59 It's Stegnest, so bring the coats if you need to.
20:03 Right, what have we got?
20:05 We have got some fantastic things coming up.
20:07 On the television this week we have, of course, the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
20:13 Our hopes are with Olly Alexander who is singing a song called Dizzy.
20:18 Check it out online if you haven't heard it already and give us some support when he is back in England.
20:25 Right, and that will be live from Malmo in Sweden on Saturday at 8 o'clock.
20:32 What have we got Stegnest?
20:34 Well, what have we got?
20:35 We have quite a lot of things.
20:37 We have a special contest from Fantasy Island this weekend in Captain Jack's.
20:45 And to tell us more about it we have Danielle with the Entertainment staff.
20:50 Danielle, can you tell us more?
20:52 Yeah, absolutely.
20:53 So this weekend at Captain Jack's at Fantasy Island we have got a full weekend of entertainment lined up.
20:59 We have a tribute to Sir Cliff Richard on Friday evening and that is free entry, so come on down.
21:05 And then on Saturday evening we have got the Incredible Books Fizz with us with the original member from the original Eurovision Song Contest, Bobby G.
21:15 It is a completely free entry on the weekend.
21:18 We have a fancy dress competition running this weekend as well.
21:21 And you have the ability to be able to win a free holiday, so that is really exciting.
21:26 So come on down, we are going to show the competition live on Saturday evening in our sister bar, Castaways.
21:34 So yeah, lots of fun things going on.
21:36 Eurovision bingo, quizzes, children's entertainment that is themed around Eurovision.
21:41 Can I also touch on a couple of other things?
21:44 Oh yeah, go for it.
21:46 We have also got next Thursday our first ever comedy club at Fantasy Island at Captain Jack's.
21:52 It is £10 a ticket and we are also offering free parking as well, so that is going to save £8, which is fantastic.
21:59 Down at Skeknes Pier we have also now got a brand new resident DJ, Brady, who is there every weekend.
22:05 We have got a day out with the Lincolnshire Wildlife, so we are having a wildlife day down there.
22:10 This Sunday we have also got a meet and greet with your favourite children's characters, so please come on down.
22:15 We have got lounge sounds, karaoke over Maybank Holiday.
22:19 And we have also got Poptastic Bingo and we have also got Punch and Judy coming for the first time to Skeknes Pier.
22:26 Please come down, we have got lots going on at Fantasy Island and Skeknes Pier.
22:30 Wow, thank you Janet.
22:32 Thank you.
22:33 Wow, I am going to have to pop down then.
22:35 Yes, I do like the fancy dress as well.
22:37 Fantastic.
22:38 Well, what else have we got?
22:40 We have, it is also National Mills Week, so one event not to miss and to look out for is a demonstration by Dawn Blunden
22:49 of sophisticate on the Broadway and Woodall star. She made the wedding cake for King Charles and Camilla.
22:56 And I do know what the cake looked like because there is a sample and a demonstration of it in our shop.
23:02 Fantastic cake, so don't miss that.
23:05 If I just jump in there.
23:08 Please jump in.
23:09 She is in aid of the volunteers at the windmill because another one of our stories this week is that the Thurham Windmill
23:20 is hoping for some good news that they can soon start the work to put the sails back on.
23:26 So there is more on that there.
23:29 But your cake event is going to be supporting the volunteers moving forward.
23:36 Very worthy cause and cake, what could be better?
23:39 Yes, and that is this Saturday at 2.30 to 3.30.
23:43 There is also a number of walks connected to the Linkshed World Outdoor Festival starting from Gumby Hall.
23:52 And there is the May Speed Weekend at the Stiglish Races as well.
23:57 Next, the fortnight after that, the weekend after that there will be a 1940s event I do believe at Church Farm.
24:05 So there is lots ahead and I hope you all come down and see that as well.
24:11 Don't forget we've got lots of good things but please check them out online.
24:16 The link with this broadcast does actually say what's on in the next few days.
24:25 So thank you for that.
24:27 That just leaves me to thank all of our guests this morning for coming along.
24:32 The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Pete Barry, Michael Lytko from the Skidmore District Community Connect Mental Health
24:43 and Sports Therapist Olivia Brown.
24:46 We do want to hear your stories.
24:49 If you do get in touch, if you think you have a story for us, our contact details are online.
24:56 Also on our website linkshedworld.com you can now submit a story.
25:03 If you just go to the top of the page and follow the link you can put your own story and pictures in there for publication.
25:09 So we would encourage you to do that as well.
25:12 Thank you so much for joining us and hope to see you soon.
25:17 Thank you. Thank you everybody for coming.
