00:00 The production of agriculture in the country increased, according to the Department of Agriculture,
00:05 the result of the efforts of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
00:10 which helped to reduce the effect of El Niño.
00:14 This is Claycel Pardilla in the Philippines.
00:17 Despite the El Niño's victory,
00:22 the production of agriculture in the country increased in the first quarter of 2024.
00:28 According to the Philippine Statistics Authority,
00:32 the production of agriculture is worth P428.99 billion,
00:38 which is 0.05% higher than the same period last year.
00:43 The increase in the production of chicken, onions, corn,
00:48 and also the grains used in sugar, coffee and other products
00:53 is because the Department of Agriculture believed that it increased the production of food
00:57 because of the efforts of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
01:02 to counter or reduce the effect of drought,
01:05 water supply such as solar irrigation,
01:08 and small water impounding projects,
01:11 and to distribute free rice,
01:13 to enrich and encourage farmers,
01:15 is the goal of the administration in front of the El Niño.
01:19 It's a small growth but it's still positive,
01:25 despite all the challenges we have.
01:29 We're expecting at least for rice,
01:31 the total area to be 120,000 hectares.
01:35 That's our initial estimate.
01:37 When the government said that it could be a strong to severe El Niño,
01:43 that's what we're preparing for,
01:45 to make sure that the big effect that we're expecting will be mitigated because of El Niño.
01:51 The production of rice was reduced by 2% when their crops were dry.
01:56 And the fishing and aquaculture was delayed because of the fish kill.
02:02 The increase in livestock such as pigs was also negative
02:06 because of the continuous spread of African swine fever.
02:09 The reduction of production of agricultural products at the end of El Niño
02:14 resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs,
02:18 said the Philippine Statistics Authority.
02:20 But the Department of Agriculture was positive
02:23 that it can recover in the second quarter of 2024.
02:27 They were affected by the El Niño.
02:30 The reduction of the number of employed persons was about 318,000.
02:38 And this is really related to planting, harvesting, growing,
02:45 paddy rice, vegetables.
02:48 We had a reduction in value production.
02:51 So, it reflects...
02:52 Normally, the first quarter is about bidding, procurement.
02:58 So, when the second quarter comes, you'll have awards.
03:01 That's when it will pick up.
03:03 That's when the big employment in agriculture will come again
03:06 because of land preparation for rice, for corn,
03:10 and then our production in livestock.
03:14 When your production increases,
03:16 it means you can sell it at a lower price.
03:20 Meanwhile, the House Committee on Agriculture and Food
03:24 welcomed the development of the DA
03:26 when it amended the Rice Tarification Law.
03:29 The agency believes that the entry of the National Food Authority
03:33 into the market will help reduce the price of rice.
03:37 Kalei Zalparadilla for Pambansang TV in the new Philippines.
