00:00 Tucked in bustling Damansara Uptown in Petaling Jaya, Selangor is YL's Gelateria, a place
00:06 where you'll find absolutely decadent gelato and sorbet.
00:15 But this cozy spot is not just any regular gelato shop, it is also a sweet symbol of
00:21 a mother's love.
00:23 YL's Gelateria was founded by Laura Yap May Wan and her husband for their 25-year-old
00:30 son, Koo Yuan Lee, who has autism.
00:35 It was the perfect sweet solution to help Koo become more independent, especially since
00:41 he loves ice cream.
00:43 Today, Koo looks forward to work and has a regular routine that includes administrative
00:50 tasks and keeping the store clean.
00:54 Yap shares that Koo was just under 3 years old when he was diagnosed with autism.
01:14 Yap subsequently left her legal career to devote more time to care for her boy.
01:28 Today, she has no regrets and doesn't see it as a sacrifice.
01:37 I think that is gratifying to know that he's able to do something for himself rather than
01:44 asking for donations and handouts and things like that.
01:48 To other parents with autistic children, she shared these words of encouragement.
01:53 I think you should not give up hope.
01:57 Make up your mind how you want your child to live.
