00:00 It is a fresh month of May and we're talking about a series of testicular conditions
00:07 that can contribute towards erectile dysfunction or any form of sexual dysfunction
00:13 Let's talk about number one which is varicocele
00:17 Varicocele as I previously described before it's like a bag of worms inside your testicle
00:28 not a physical worm but the actual vessels the veins that's dilated that looks like a worm
00:35 If you imagine that men and women can get varicocele of their legs and varicocele of
00:41 the testicle can also exist and that itself has two problems
00:46 Number one it obviously is a bit uncomfortable because the excess amount of blood will cause
00:52 a dragging sensation of the testicle. Number two it also will influence the temperature
00:59 inside the scrotum. The scrotum is designed to be one degree lower in temperature compared to
01:06 the rest of the core body. As a result of that it will optimize sperm production and also
01:12 testosterone production. Although we have discussed the consequence of higher temperature of the
01:19 testicle as far as fertility is concerned but there are very few studies to suggest that
01:25 when there is varicocele is there any form of sexual dysfunction. In fact a Taiwanese study
01:33 has looked at more than 100,000 men and she realized that varicocele happened between 15 to
01:41 3 to 15 percent of general population and 40 percent of men with infertility will have varicocele
01:48 and out of these 40 percent about 30 percent of men who has got varicocele will have problem of
01:55 lower sex drive and also erectile dysfunction. In fact we don't really know what causes it but the
02:02 most obvious reason why is that when the testosterone is lower then men will suffer
02:08 from erectile dysfunction. So will the reversal of varicocele actually improve that? In fact there
02:15 are some studies to show that improvement of the varicocele, the rectification of varicocele
02:22 definitely will improve the sperm quality and the operation to reverse the varicocele also
02:29 improve testosterone and men with erectile dysfunction certainly have that resolved
02:34 after the operation. For the following week we're exploring another form of testicular
02:39 abnormality contributing towards erectile dysfunction or sexual dysfunction. We're
02:45 going to talk about inguinal hernia. So will inguinal hernia affect your sex life?
02:51 You need to know. You stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
