Relive the 2024 Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway that ended a winless streak and had two drivers at odds on pit road after the race was over.
Transcript
00:00 >> And the good year 400 is underway.
00:20 >> Tyler Redick wasted no time as keselowski slides up in front of Gibbs to secure the
00:39 second spot in turn four.
00:42 >> The next part of this equation, we know Larson is fast.
00:45 We just noted it.
00:46 They are starting to catch lap traffic.
00:48 It will be another lap and Redick the leader will be in lap traffic.
00:51 Now he's going to be mired in traffic and that will be keselowski's opportunity to pounce.
00:55 >> Look at Kyle Larson.
00:57 The car right behind these two cars, Kyle Larson, watch his line, Clint.
01:01 When he goes into the entry to the corner, he's got a little bit higher entry.
01:05 See how he's off that apron in turn one.
01:07 He uses that to get that straight line up off the corner.
01:10 You see how he turns down earlier in turn two.
01:14 When he goes into turn three, he's going to go in above that top scene and now that he's
01:19 catching traffic, he may come down.
01:21 He may not be close enough to do it yet.
01:22 When he was behind the 54, he would ride that rim right there and turn it off the wall.
01:27 Until he gets close, when he gets closer, he'll turn that car off the wall and drive
01:30 off straight.
01:31 >> Look at this.
01:32 They're going to get him, boys.
01:34 These guys are getting passed.
01:35 Who are they getting passed by?
01:38 Short pit.
01:39 You got Byron in the lead.
01:40 By the way, Byron somehow got around the 5 in pit road.
01:44 That's why he's pit early.
01:47 Now will you pay the price on the back out of these runs?
01:50 >> This is when it becomes difficult.
01:52 Because you've got to run that whole long run all the way.
01:56 It's going to be 50 plus laps.
01:58 You never know with these guys.
01:59 They might decide to split it up again.
02:02 That's going to be a long ways if we run the whole run.
02:07 >> Ty Gibbs takes over the lead of the good year.
02:10 445 laps in after one round of green flag pit stops.
02:16 Larson passing Ty Gibbs here to take over the front spot.
02:22 >> Ty was having trouble getting around Carson Hospital in front of him.
02:26 Larson caught him pretty quick.
02:27 Put the pressure on him.
02:28 Got into turn three.
02:29 Gibbs got loose.
02:30 The rest is history.
02:31 >> Yeah, that's real easy to do in that corner.
02:36 It's a very common problem no matter what car you drive.
02:39 Getting loose in turn three.
02:40 The way you carry the speed in.
02:42 It's a little bit of swell getting into the corner.
02:44 A ridge that you go over.
02:47 >> Taking a look at stage points.
02:48 Ryan Blaney.
02:49 Remember he was 18th before the pit stop cycle.
02:52 He ran the first 45 laps before coming in.
02:55 He's up into the top ten.
02:57 A gain of eight with that strategy.
02:59 >> Both of these guys right here, Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney were the guys that stayed
03:04 out the longest.
03:05 I think that that lap time difference in the new tires, old tires, it just became a little
03:09 bit easier to make up that track position with what they gave up at the end of that
03:13 last first cycle.
03:15 >> Last lap, stage one.
03:17 Larson holding station behind chase Elliott so as not to put his Hendrick Chevy teammate
03:22 a lap down.
03:23 He would still get his lap back on the free pass but he would have to pit with the lap
03:27 down cars and start tail end.
03:30 So good strategic move here.
03:33 >> This will be Larson's seventh stage win of the season.
03:36 He only had eight in all of 2023.
03:39 So he is on great pace as he rounds off turn four.
03:46 In that great throwback scheme to Terry Labonte's 96 championship.
03:50 >> Look at this, guys.
03:51 Six beat him out.
03:52 45 didn't have to move much.
03:55 Where's he at?
03:56 Plus three.
03:57 At that number one box.
04:00 >> There it is, Kevin.
04:02 Number one box.
04:03 >> Stage two.
04:05 Tyler Reddick, Brad keselowski.
04:07 Bring them back to green and again, Reddick gets a good jump.
04:12 >> Thank you, number one pit stall.
04:16 >> That's why Brad keselowski was so frustrated yesterday after qualifying because he knows
04:20 how much easier that number one pit stall makes this day.
04:23 You saw evidence of that as Tyler Reddick came off pit road first that time.
04:29 >> Look at Blaney coming by.
04:32 Just keeps marching up through them.
04:35 Good day so far for Ryan Blaney.
04:37 Got Nemechek around on the front straightaway, guys.
04:41 >> Facing the wrong way in that Lee petty 1956 Dodge tribute car.
04:46 John Hunter Nemechek was running 17th at the time of the spin.
04:50 This is the second caution of the day.
04:52 It comes at lap 121.
04:56 >> Right front tire is down, Kevin.
04:57 >> Left rear right front.
04:59 >> Back to green.
05:03 Three wide for third.
05:09 >> Here comes William Byron on that inside.
05:19 >> They squeeze him.
05:20 Almost wrecked.
05:21 Blaney in the wall.
05:22 They're wrecking, guys.
05:23 >> And they pile up accordion style behind him.
05:27 >> I think Blaney has a right rear toe link broke.
05:31 Watch William Byron.
05:33 He's the one that gets the run here.
05:36 Goes to the inside as he gets into three.
05:38 Gets him three wide.
05:41 >> You see that 12 car get to the outside of the 19.
05:46 Byron just -- they just all came together right there.
05:49 We talked about it in the beginning of the show.
05:51 I think that 17 car is going to have some damage on the front end too.
05:55 >> Probably that gap, that splitter, right?
05:58 You said that in the pre-race show, Kevin.
06:01 Cannot get that separation.
06:04 >> Just a little bit and gets into the side of Truex.
06:06 Truex was trying to back out.
06:08 >> Big hit for Blaney.
06:09 >> 17.
06:10 >> 17 is going to have that front end damage like you're talking about.
06:19 >> When somebody falls out, somebody else's fortune.
06:21 Look at that Logano.
06:22 Bubba Wallace up there.
06:23 Filling them slots.
06:25 Here they come.
06:27 >> Boy, Reddick's had great fire off speed all day.
06:30 He just launches out ahead of the field.
06:36 >> That's what you want.
06:37 You want to be able to control the race.
06:38 You want to control it on the pit road, off pit road, on the restarts, into turn one,
06:43 pick the lane.
06:44 It's all working that way for Tyler Reddick right now.
06:47 Everything he can do to not make any mistakes and keep control of the race, his odds just
06:52 keep going up every lap.
06:53 >> This is when you can get yourself in trouble.
06:56 Let's see what happens.
06:59 >> Seeing him get loose back there all by himself, guys.
07:02 Trying to stay out of the wall.
07:03 Spun around.
07:04 Gets into the inside wall.
07:05 >> Reddick and keselowski again on the front row where Tyler Reddick has dominated every
07:10 start and restart today.
07:13 >> You see Brad keselowski be a little more aggressive with the side draft right there.
07:22 He's kept himself in a better position.
07:24 This is when it gets tight coming off of turn two.
07:28 See those cars bouncing and wiggling around over that bump on the exit.
07:31 Brad keselowski is there.
07:33 >> Yes.
07:34 That was a great start for Brad keselowski.
07:36 Trying to slide job him.
07:37 Not going to be there.
07:38 Reddick still holding tight on his outside.
07:41 Here they come off the 4.
07:42 They both know this is a short run.
07:43 You see them bang doors a little bit.
07:45 They both know they don't have to take care of their tires.
07:47 They know how important it is to get not only stage points but track position and control
07:52 this race.
07:53 >> Careful off of two.
07:55 >> Keselowski has led one lap today as he falls in line behind reddick who has led more
08:00 laps at darlington than any other track in his career.
08:04 For stage two, reddick leading keselowski by a second.
08:08 He's one and three-quarters back.
08:16 Tyler reddick looking to win his second stage of the season.
08:21 It would be his first stage win at darlington.
08:27 In that tim richmond daytona consolation race winning graphic scheme.
08:33 Here they come for stage three.
08:40 Green flag.
08:41 >> Oh, they're banging.
08:42 Put some pressure on him.
08:43 >> Look at the inside.
08:44 >> You see brad keselowski just kind of give that position up.
08:56 >> Not so fast.
08:58 Still holding on the outside.
08:59 Here comes a big push.
09:00 >> Byron again three wide way deep on the bottom but has to back out.
09:06 >> Slide job.
09:07 Larson is going to slide up in front of him.
09:08 Leaves him room on the outside.
09:09 Respect.
09:10 >> Pretty nice to him there, wasn't he?
09:15 >> I really thought he had plenty of room to at least try to make him go the opposite
09:19 direction.
09:20 But he decided to give him the lane and brad drew back around.
09:24 >> Careful.
09:25 >> He's going to get a -- >> Emmerich trying to stay on the tail end
09:28 of the lead lap in the 31.
09:30 >> New leader brad keselowski for the second time today.
09:34 >> The thing that happened right there was keselowski had clean air in front of him and
09:39 reddick was behind that lap car and got him tight and brad was able to drive by and get
09:45 more aggressive.
09:46 Let's hear what the 5 has to say.
09:49 >> Oh, he's around.
09:51 >> Left rear.
09:52 >> Larson in the wall.
09:53 >> Left rear went off the beat.
09:54 Loose -- or excuse me, flat tire.
09:57 >> That will bring out a caution at lap 2.
09:59 >> Brought right back in here.
10:02 Leader is middle one of two.
10:05 >> That changes things.
10:09 >> Larson was sixth.
10:10 He had brushed the wall earlier and his last couple of lap times were almost a second off
10:15 the leader.
10:16 Joey Logano had just passed him the lap before.
10:20 >> See that left rear soft already.
10:22 Went off the beat right there.
10:23 >> Yeah.
10:24 >> I think he felt that left rear tire going down.
10:30 There it went.
10:31 >> The 23 11 has ever led in a race as tyler reddick brings us back to green with brad
10:36 keselowski inside.
10:50 >> Reddick can't clear.
10:51 >> I think brad knew exactly what he needed to do right there.
10:54 He shoved the 45 up the racetrack.
10:57 I think brad feels like this would have been his best chance to drive by reddick on the
11:03 bottom.
11:04 But definitely saw him fighting for space on the entry to the corner.
11:07 Here we go again.
11:08 Side draft off the 45.
11:09 >> 45 had to lift a little bit.
11:10 Yes, he did.
11:11 He's crowding him a little bit.
11:12 Still got room.
11:13 Here he is on the door.
11:14 >> Same for buscher in third battling ty gibbs.
11:22 But then buscher pulls ahead and now it's six cars together for the lead.
11:33 >> Either driver giving an inch right here.
11:35 Drag race down the front straightaway.
11:36 Here comes buscher to the inside.
11:37 He's going to give his teammate a huge shot.
11:40 >> How about that?
11:41 >> I'm surprised he didn't try to cross over.
11:43 He would have if that wasn't his boss.
11:44 Could have got a two for one right there.
11:47 Man they're going at it, kevin.
11:49 >> Both of these guys know how important this is going to be the race for the win if the
11:52 caution doesn't come back out.
11:57 >> Keselowski relentless.
11:59 Holding the bottom.
12:01 Reddick trying to power ahead and can't do it.
12:05 Keselowski is still there on his corner.
12:07 Door even and ahead.
12:09 >> One more shot.
12:10 You're going to have to run him up the track.
12:11 You need to crowd him.
12:12 Running out of chances with him up there in that preferred groove.
12:16 >> Every lap he runs low.
12:17 It makes it harder and harder on his tires on the long run.
12:21 Chris buscher is going to play a part in this.
12:24 If he has the opportunity to help brad as we saw he'll do it again.
12:28 >> Fantastic racing.
12:29 Door to door for these guys.
12:30 >> I thought reddick might have rubbed the wall.
12:32 >> He's leaning on him.
12:34 Here comes a crossover for buscher.
12:36 Going to pass them both.
12:38 >> Way down on the apron.
12:39 >> He's clear, guys.
12:41 >> Chris buscher.
12:42 Now he's going to check up.
12:45 Last week the bridesmaid.
12:46 Now he's in the lead.
12:47 >> Here comes the dive bomb.
12:49 He's going to try to slide him.
12:50 >> He's going to try to slide him.
12:52 >> Buscher got in the wall.
12:54 Watch for the 6 car coming.
12:58 >> Buscher is in trouble.
12:59 >> He's looking.
13:00 He's mad.
13:01 >> He's not happy.
13:02 Something's wrong.
13:03 >> They're both in trouble.
13:04 Reddick's in trouble.
13:05 He's got a right rear flat.
13:06 >> And reddick fences it again.
13:13 >> No caution yet.
13:14 He's still going around there.
13:15 >> I'm not so sure that 17 car has not got an issue as well.
13:19 >> He's pitting.
13:20 The 6 back to the lead.
13:22 Oh, my gosh.
13:23 And you're right.
13:24 He came over here.
13:25 Big gamble.
13:26 Put it on his shoulders and did it.
13:28 Left the championship.
13:29 Continuing team and organization.
13:31 >> White flag.
13:32 One lap to go.
13:33 Sponsored by credit one bank.
13:34 >> Brad keselowski is four corners away from getting back into victory lane.
13:39 He has done a fantastic job.
13:40 We knew that this was the style of racetrack.
13:43 We knew he had a good car yesterday.
13:45 He did well.
13:46 That put him in position to do exactly what he's done today.
13:50 >> Rfk, they're here.
13:54 They're back.
13:55 Both of those cars were a factor.
13:57 It's brad keselowski.
13:58 So happy for this guy.
14:00 >> Three years of trying.
14:01 Since talladega, April 21, brad keselowski wins the good year 400.
14:07 36th career win.
