00:00I'm always talking about how food is medicine,
00:02but sometimes the most potent foods don't have to be fresh.
00:06Some of the most powerful cancer fighters in the world
00:08are found right in your pantry.
00:10They keep, they're cheap, and they're easy to grab.
00:13And you know what?
00:13Some of them come in cans.
00:15So here to review the best cancer-fighting foods
00:17that you must keep in your pantry is Dr. Will Clower.
00:19He's a leading nutritionist and founder
00:21of the Mediterranean Wellness Initiative.
00:23Thank you for joining us.
00:24Thank you.
00:25So talk to me a little bit about cancer-fighting foods
00:27and why you think they're so important
00:29to keep in our pantries.
00:30Well, it's critical.
00:30When I talk to people all over the country,
00:32what I find is that the number one problem
00:34they come up to me with is they'll say,
00:36I can't make good foods that's good for me
00:39because it's too expensive and it takes too long.
00:42The thing I love about this segment
00:44is that everything you have here
00:46are things that are cheap, they keep, like you said,
00:49and they're delicious too.
00:51All right, so come on back here.
00:52Dr. Clower has three groups of foods
00:54you can store in your pantry to reduce your risks of cancer.
00:57The first pantry must have
00:59if you're gonna reduce your chance of cancer
01:00are foods that have orange colors to them.
01:02Now, why is that?
01:03All oranges have beta-carotene in them,
01:05and the beta-carotene is a massive antioxidant.
01:08Antioxidants in your body,
01:10what they do is they clean up the toxins.
01:12They clean up the waste products of the cells in your body.
01:15It's kind of like the antioxidants,
01:17they're like the garbage men of your body.
01:19They pick it up, they clean it up,
01:20so that garbage doesn't build, build, build,
01:23and lead to chronic diseases like cancer.
01:25All right, so very specifically,
01:26you picked pumpkin,
01:27and you picked a butternut squash product as well.
01:30Yeah, fabulous, fabulous.
01:31Both of these have lots of potassium,
01:35good for your heart, good for a lot of things,
01:37and all the beta-carotenes that are great for you.
01:39And if you get that butternut squash,
01:41you throw it in a pan, and when you do that,
01:43what you do is you stick a little stick,
01:45this is a secret.
01:45Please tell me, I love secrets.
01:47You stick a little stick of cinnamon in there,
01:49and then when you get it out,
01:51you get it with a little crunchy bread,
01:52a little maybe parmesan cheese on the top.
01:54Oh, I know, I'm ready to eat now.
01:55You guys hungry?
01:56Right.
01:57Yeah.
01:58All right, any particular cancers
01:59have these benefits you for?
02:01Breast cancer is the one that's the most well-researched.
02:03Women who eat orange foods,
02:06their likelihood of breast cancer plummets.
02:08And it's not supplements.
02:11These are the data, it's not supplements,
02:13it's these foods that you can keep in your pantry,
02:16and then pull out at any point.
02:18So treat these like medications?
02:19Totally.
02:20Give me a dose.
02:21Totally.
02:22Three times per week.
02:23Okay.
02:23You can do that, right?
02:24Three times a week.
02:26Next, must have in your pantry are products
02:28that are rich in antioxidants like these beans.
02:30Yes.
02:31And why'd you pick these in particular?
02:32Well, all red beans are so high in antioxidants.
02:36As a matter of fact,
02:37if you, when you list the top antioxidants on planet Earth,
02:41three of the top four are beans like these.
02:44Is that right?
02:45So not only do, yes,
02:46and not only do they have the antioxidants,
02:48but they have two other things
02:50that are such good cancer fighters.
02:52One of the things that are in red beans
02:54include things like,
02:56there's something that causes your cancer cells
02:58to commit suicide, cancer cell suicide,
03:03because of these things
03:03that you can pull right out of your cupboard.
03:05You stick it in a pan, you warm it up, you spice it up,
03:07and you are good to go.
03:08A little rice.
03:09Right.
03:10It's awesome.
03:11Inexpensive, folks, inexpensive.
03:11So very specifically,
03:12which cancers can we help ourselves with with these beans?
03:15Colon cancer and lung cancer.
03:17That's one of the biggest ones.
03:18Yeah, exactly.
03:19And give me a dose.
03:20They're medications, give me a dose.
03:21These also are around three times per week,
03:24and you need to include these in some way.
03:27You can include them by throwing them in a chili,
03:29you can throw them in a stew,
03:30or you can just get the pintos,
03:32and you can have them on the side
03:34as a quick, quick, quick, easy, easy, easy
03:36side dish for any meal.
03:38I'm gonna pass these out afterwards.
03:39Okay, the last packet,
03:40let's have our cruciferous vegetables.
03:42This was the one that we thought
03:44would be most challenging,
03:45because most folks don't think
03:46about cruciferous vegetables.
03:47Right.
03:48Some of you keep in your pantry,
03:48but you have a solution.
03:49How is that possible?
03:50Well, it's cabbage.
03:52It has a lot of things that are good for you about cabbage,
03:54but when you ferment that cabbage,
03:58and that fermentation leads to sauerkraut,
04:01that main cancer-fighting molecule in the cabbage degrades,
04:05and you're thinking, oh, that's awful.
04:07It degrades, it's bad,
04:08but the thing it degrades into
04:10are three or four different cancer fighters.
04:13It's almost like a Big Daddy cancer fighter
04:17gave birth to several more cancer fighters,
04:19and all of them grew up
04:21and turned out to be working for you,
04:22killing cancer.
04:23Nice.
04:25What cancers, again,
04:26and give me a rough amount per week we need to take.
04:29All fermented foods are good for preventing colon cancer,
04:32and this is no exception.
04:35In addition to colon cancer,
04:36this guy helps to also prevent other things
04:39like prostate cancer and breast cancer.
04:41Again, we have covered all the big cancer study folks,
04:43but the problem is you can keep in your pantry.
04:46Yes, absolutely.
04:47Well, how many servings a week?
04:49As often as you can get them.
04:51It's hard to get an upper limit.
04:52The problem with things like sauerkraut
04:54is that people don't know how to eat it anymore.
04:56They're thinking sauerkraut,
04:57oh, I see, chili cheese dogs,
04:59and you're like, really?
05:00Chili is this?
05:01That's what?
05:02But you can have sauerkraut on any sandwich.
05:04It has a nice crunch, a nice snap,
05:06and it's got that acidity that breaks up the flavor.
05:08It's brilliant,
05:09and you can also have it by itself on the side.
05:13You mix protein with sauerkraut,
05:14you can eat just about anything.
05:15That's right.
05:16It is good to go.
05:16It's great with lentils and maybe a little pork chop,
05:19and if you have those together,
05:21you've got all that goodness,
05:22and that probably costs you $4
05:23and took you 12 minutes to make.
05:25Dr. Clower, thank you for your time.
05:26Pleasure.
05:27Appreciate it very much.
