00:00 The sweet profit from growing mangoes
00:03 was returned to the poor for a farmer in Isabela who was forced to throw his crop.
00:10 According to the farmer, the profit is only 5 to 7 pesos per kilo in their area.
00:15 Witness, EJ Gomez.
00:17 84,000 pesos.
00:23 That's the profit from 3,000 kilos of ripe mangoes that were thrown in San Mateo, Isabela.
00:30 According to the owner of the mangoes, Frederick Marcos Cayaban,
00:34 the mangoes were thrown in Metro Manila.
00:37 They were part of the total delivery of 15,000 kilos.
00:42 In Metro Manila, the profit is too high because there are too many supplies in the plant.
00:48 He was forced to throw it away because it fell.
00:53 We loaded it in a truck so it was thrown away.
00:57 Some of the mangoes that were chosen to be eaten were given away.
01:02 They say that their loss is too much.
01:04 The profit in their area was only 55 pesos per kilo last March
01:09 and it dropped to 20 pesos at the end of April.
01:13 After 5 days, the price changed.
01:18 It was 17 pesos, then 12 pesos, and now it's only 5 to 7 pesos.
01:28 That's different from the prices in Metro Manila.
01:31 The price of mangoes here in Mega Q Mart in Quezon City is 95 pesos per kilo
01:37 for quality or clean ones like this.
01:40 If one is not sold for up to two days, the price will drop to 50 pesos per kilo.
01:47 And if it looks like this, it will be rotten, too ripe.
01:51 After 3 days in the market, the price dropped to 30 pesos per kilo.
01:58 I will sell this. It will be sold soon.
02:02 But if it's not sold by tomorrow, it will be rotten because of the hot weather.
02:06 The mangoes will easily get rotten.
02:08 We sell some of them in a shake.
02:11 Even if it's not sold, it's still expensive.
02:13 The ones that are not sold are the ones that are for sale.
02:15 Almost every day, they force to throw away a few kilos of mangoes
02:20 that sometimes can reach up to 30 kilos.
02:23 The Agriculture Department explains that it's the peak harvest season now.
02:27 It's not necessarily over supply, but this is the peak harvest season.
02:32 The ones that are sold in the market are like tomatoes.
02:36 The tomatoes that are normally thrown away are the last stages of harvest.
02:41 The same goes for the mangoes.
02:43 Almost every day, they harvest.
02:45 The DA says there is a mechanism to reduce the waste of crops.
02:49 The agency says there are trucks in its regional field offices,
02:53 local government units, and cooperatives to use the crops that are in need.
02:59 We talk to them, we can coordinate with the LGUs,
03:03 our municipal and city agricultural units, and we coordinate with the region.
03:07 Frederick is also involved in the DA.
03:10 The DA helped me earlier, the DA.
03:14 They got me 800 kilos of mangoes.
03:18 It's a big thing that the mangoes are getting cheaper.
03:24 The agency hopes that the purchase of local products that will be harvested like this
03:30 will be a regular program so that the waste of their harvested crops will not be repeated.
