00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking back at the matches that made the Indian Premier League the biggest 2020 cricket league in the world.
00:13 [Crowd cheering]
00:19 Number 10. The Kolkata Knight Riders vs. the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
00:24 IPL 1, Match 1.
00:26 The first match in IPL history set the standard for the tournament and T20s in general.
00:31 KKR's Brendan McCullum demonstrated the IPL's hardcore, no-holds-barred entertainment value by smashing a Mammoth 158.
00:39 "What a shot! What a shot!"
00:42 KKR made getting a score above 200 look like child's play.
00:46 Starting things off with such a bang enabled the tournament to soar to the heights it's known for today.
00:51 "Here he goes again, number 12!"
00:54 Though it was McCullum's batting that ultimately sealed the victory,
00:57 KKR's fabulous bowling performance showed that bowlers had an equal role to play.
01:02 Despite possessing some of the greatest hitters in the game,
01:05 RCB never quite got going.
01:07 However, this helped to confirm that the IPL was a tournament that was as unpredictable as it was exhilarating.
01:14 "Bowled him! Knocked him back!"
01:18 Number 9. The Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Pune Warriors India.
01:23 IPL 6, Match 31.
01:25 There had been many big scores before this 2013 match,
01:29 but none lit up the sky like Chris Gayle's spectacular innings.
01:32 "Biggest over of the tournament, 28 off it, 61 without loss."
01:37 At the time, there was no larger T20 score than RCB's 263,
01:42 and no innings higher than Gayle's 175, making this match one for the record books.
01:48 Gayle's clean hitting remains awe-inspiring to watch,
01:51 as the batsman hammered sixes galore around the stadium.
01:54 "That's the fastest IPL 100 T20 hundred, and the fastest T20 hundred in the history of the game."
02:03 It was the performance that justified why RCB had paid big for Gayle's services,
02:08 and no bowler even slightly threatened his resolve.
02:11 Although a one-sided game, the match has among the best replay value in the IPL.
02:16 Gayle's onslaught is still breathtaking over a decade later,
02:20 while RCB's spirited bowling performance made it an all-round effort.
02:24 "Ha ha ha, he's got him! He's got him, you can't keep him out of the action.
02:30 My man, Chris Gayle!"
02:32 Matches that go down the wire are usually seesaw affairs.
02:42 This one was all about the final over.
02:46 "Oh, he's got a glove on it. Has he got four for it? Yes he has!
02:51 Eight off the first two."
02:53 KKR bossed Mumbai around for most of the match,
02:56 posting a good total before keeping the run rate low during the latter's chase.
02:59 They had the opportunity to deny Mumbai the chance to progress in the tournament.
03:03 "He's nicked it for four!
03:07 Suddenly it's five from two!"
03:12 But despite the tall task of scoring 21 in six balls,
03:17 the last over went Mumbai's way,
03:19 as lucky edges sped toward the boundary on multiple occasions.
03:22 With five needed off the final ball,
03:25 the team pulled a miracle to end things with a six.
03:27 "He's hit it out of the ground for six!"
03:30 Years since, few matches have had so many people's hearts in their throats,
03:36 especially one that swung around completely in its final moments.
03:41 Number 7 - The Mumbai Indians vs. The Sunrisers Hyderabad
03:45 IPL 12 Match 19
03:47 Not all great matches need to be high-scoring affairs.
03:50 This 2019 encounter certainly proves it.
03:53 "In the air, and a simple catch for Johnny Bairstow."
03:57 Even with Mumbai Indians' batting prowess,
03:59 the team could only muster 136 across all 20 overs.
04:03 Sunrisers' overwhelming odds for victory were heightened after a solid start,
04:07 but that all turned out to be as far as they would go.
04:10 "Oh, ball straight away!"
04:13 After the fall of the first wicket,
04:15 Sunrisers' batting order was absolutely dismantled by their opponents.
04:19 Thanks to a star-making six-wicket haul from debutante Alzharie Joseph,
04:23 Mumbai's small target ultimately looked massive.
04:26 It was about which team believed they could win,
04:28 and the momentum was clearly in Mumbai's favor.
04:31 "Oh, he's done it! The best spigot in IPL cricket!"
04:35 The low-scoring thriller showed that the IPL isn't just a batsman's paradise.
04:39 6. The Chennai Super Kings vs. The Kolkata Knight Riders
04:43 IPL XI Match 5
04:46 Sometimes, individual brilliance is more than enough.
04:49 However, cricket is not a team sport for nothing.
04:52 In this 2018 match,
04:54 KKR's Andre Russell threatened to turn things into a one-man show
04:57 with a spectacular all-round performance.
05:00 Russell's power hitting lifted Mumbai to a commanding total,
05:03 as the batsman smashed 88 off just 36 balls.
05:06 "Yes, 200 comes up, all he has to do is put back to ball.
05:11 What a fearsome inning this has been from Andre Russell."
05:14 KKR remained one step ahead of CSK during the reply,
05:17 but the latter team's collective effort stole the win.
05:20 Along with Shane Watson's hard-hitting opening,
05:23 Sam Billings dazzled with some late fireworks.
05:25 "With the field out, we'll watch it say an over, it's not a good over."
05:29 As is usually the case with classics, the final over decided the match.
05:33 Thanks to an unlucky no-ball from Dwayne Bravo,
05:36 CSK rested control before winning with a last-ball six.
05:40 "Game set and match to CSK.
05:44 And Jadeja has finally knocked one over the boundary."
05:48 Number 5 - The Mumbai Indians vs. The Rajasthan Royals.
05:52 IPL 7, Match 56
05:55 It isn't every day that winning in the 15th over is a necessity.
05:59 14.4 overs to be exact.
06:01 With just one qualifier spot remaining,
06:03 the two teams had everything to play for in 2014.
06:07 "It's gonna be close.
06:08 This is a brilliant catch for a man who doesn't even know what it is to drop one.
06:14 Oh, it's a good ball."
06:15 Mumbai had it in the bag,
06:17 but an exact score was needed to lift their run rate above the Royals.
06:21 And by some miracle, they achieved it.
06:23 Corey Anderson's uninhibited innings defined the chase,
06:26 as the Batsmen scored an unbeaten 95 off just 44 deliveries.
06:32 "Doesn't quite get it. It could be in the gap. It's a boundary though.
06:36 That'll help."
06:37 But it was the last few moments that elevated this into a classic.
06:41 With said Batsman Ambati Raidu out,
06:44 Mumbai needed a boundary off one delivery.
06:46 Aditya Tare smashed the first ball he faced for a six,
06:50 stunning Royals out of the tournament and sending Mumbai through.
06:53 "Here we go. Full-toss. Oh, no, no. He's hit it.
06:56 He's hit it for six. That could be it.
06:59 Mumbai qualified."
07:01 Number 4 - The Rajasthan Royals vs. The Chennai Super Kings
07:05 IPL 1 - Final
07:07 In 2008, the first-ever IPL Final lived up to its marquee billing.
07:12 "Straight. He advances again. Hits the leg. He's gonna be out.
07:16 Great catch at mid-wicket."
07:19 Having been far and away the best side of the season,
07:21 the Royals pulled off a final heist to become the inaugural IPL champions.
07:26 Thanks to Yusuf Pathan's contributions with both ball and bat,
07:29 the team was always within sight of clinching the win.
07:32 However, CSK gave them more than a little fight.
07:35 MS Dhoni's tactical field setting contained the run flow long enough
07:39 for the match to go to the last ball.
07:40 And while a Royals victory was still on the cards,
07:48 the game could have easily gone the other way.
07:50 For the most part, this match is remembered for establishing
07:53 the IPL Final as a large-scale spectacle.
07:56 "He's gone for it. He's got it again.
07:58 He's got the side wall and it's won!"
08:01 No. 3 - The Chennai Super Kings vs. The Kings XI Punjab
08:05 IPL 3 - Match 54
08:08 MS Dhoni gained a fearsome reputation as a finisher playing for India.
08:12 However, he's transferred this talent flawlessly to the IPL as well.
08:16 No match better displayed this than this 2010 one,
08:20 which saw CSK heading into the semifinals.
08:22 "Ball!"
08:23 "That's a full-length delivery. Up goes the finger."
08:26 "Another wide to the wicket."
08:27 Punjab, eliminated and playing for pride,
08:30 did well to reach a commanding figure.
08:32 Sean Marsh's blitzing 88 left viewers wondering how CSK could overcome the target.
08:37 "Oh, has he got him there? Has he got him there?
08:40 He's on his way, borderline BJ."
08:43 With Dhoni at the crease, though, any target seems small.
08:46 The CSK captain launched a flurry of attacks during the back end of the innings,
08:50 with Punjab helpless to react.
08:52 Needing 29 off two overs,
08:54 Dhoni ended proceedings with two balls to spare.
08:57 "Whoa! Would you believe it? It's outta here!"
09:03 With wild scenes, a packed house and Dhoni's mastery,
09:07 CSK rode this victory's momentum all the way to the final.
09:11 Number 2 - The Mumbai Indians vs Rising Pune Supergiant
09:14 IPL 10 - Final
09:16 When it comes to performing in finals,
09:18 no team besides the Chennai Super Kings
09:21 has come close to touching the Mumbai Indians track record.
09:24 "Magnificent!"
09:29 Heading into the 2017 match as favorites,
09:32 the side was restricted to a low score of 129.
09:35 As it turns out, this was enough to lay their hands on the trophy.
09:39 "The charge, yes, he's given it. Packed first and back to him."
09:43 The team rallied back to throttle Supergiant's reply
09:46 despite the latter barely losing wickets.
09:49 It was the kind of bowling performance that had to be seen to be believed,
09:52 as Supergiant couldn't find boundaries no matter how hard they tried.
09:56 Still, the match was alive until its closing moments,
09:59 when Mitchell Johnson conjured a magnificent over
10:02 to leave Supergiant only one run short.
10:04 "Everyone still deflected as if they were out of the game."
10:10 "But what a pace of play that was to finish."

10:26 Fittingly, the two most successful IPL teams
10:37 had the most memorable match in the tournament's history in 2019.
10:40 In a tale of contrasting innings,
10:49 Mumbai began slowly and ended on a high,
10:52 while CSK went the opposite direction.
10:54 After struggling to a score below 150,
10:57 Mumbai were on course for a heavy defeat.
11:00 CSK's blazing start made it seem like the match was won,
11:03 only for the team to capitulate like never before.
11:06 "The short run hasn't been taken, he's working."
11:09 Mumbai's bowlers collectively engineered an astounding collapse,
11:13 as none of CSK's lower order regained momentum.
11:16 Ever the death bowler, Lasit Malenga dashed any hopes of recovery
11:20 with a marvelous last over that won Mumbai yet another IPL.
11:24 "He's given it! He has given it!"
11:27 "Lasit Malenga, the hero!"
11:32 The topsy-turvy affair was one for the ages,
11:35 ending as one of the greatest matches in T20 history.
