00:00 The Court of Appeal has scheduled July 23 to deliver the verdict on the appeal by six
00:06 former University Pertahanan National Malaysia (UPNM) students against their 18-year prison
00:12 sentence for causing the death of Navy Cadet Officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain seven years
00:18 ago.
00:19 A three-judge panel chaired by Judge Datuk Hadariah Syed Ismail announced the date on
00:25 Thursday at the conclusion of a three-day hearing that began on May 13.
00:30 Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor K Mangai told the Court that the six former students
00:35 deserve the death penalty as Zulfarhan's death was one of the rarest of rare cases, given
00:40 the extent of the victim's injuries and the way they treated him until his death.
00:46 The six, now all aged 28, are Mohamed Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Mohamed Azamuddin Matsofi,
00:54 Mohamed Najib Mohamed Razi, Mohamed Afif Najmuddin Azahat, Mohamed Shoubirin Sabri, and Abdul
01:01 Hakim Mohamed Ali.
01:03 Previously, the first five defendants were charged with murder under Section 302 of the
01:07 Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction, while Abdul Hakim
01:12 was charged with abetting the murder under Section 109 of the Penal Code, which carries
01:17 the same penalty.
01:19 The KL High Court, however, found the six defendants guilty of intentionally causing
01:24 injury to Zulfarhan without intent to kill, under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which
01:31 carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a fine if the act is committed with intent
01:36 to cause death.
