Celebrity reporter Aimee Seddon chats to actress Shawna Hamic, the star of 'Unfortunate', a show coming to Blackpool May 21-May 25.

00:00Can I ask you to, in your own words, describe what Unfortunate is?
00:12Unfortunate is the untold story of Ursula the Sea Witch.
00:16It's her side of the tale that we're very familiar with from the Disney movie The Little
00:21Mermaid.
00:22You know, so Ursula has been cast as a villain, obviously, for good reason.
00:28But this is a chance for Ursula to tell you her side of the story in a very fun and adult
00:34and fishy way.
00:37And you play Ursula, so what is she like?
00:40Do you relate to her?
00:42I do.
00:43Ursula was always my very favourite animated character when I was growing up, partly because
00:48I like a bad girl, you know, because who doesn't?
00:50But I like the fact that she represented some things that I am.
00:55She's a big girl.
00:57And back in that day, specifically, back when Little Mermaid came out, there wasn't a lot
01:02of me on screen to see and to admire.
01:06And so it inspired me in ways that, even though it was animated, made me happy.
01:14So she's always been my favourite villain, and so now I get to play her.
01:18But she's more than just the bad girl, Ursula.
01:21So in our version, at least.
01:23She's more fully fleshed out and has a backstory that she wants to tell people.
01:29And so getting to play that every night is really, really a joy.
01:34How are you feeling about coming all the way up to Blackpool with it?
01:37It's been, for a while now, it's been more than once that I was like, ooh, this looks
01:41like it's going to be fun.
01:42It looks like the people are going to be amazing, just based on comments and videos and where
01:48it's located.
01:49So I'm really excited.
01:50I'm excited to bring our show.
01:51Again, we're not a child's show, but we're excited to have people that want to come and
01:56have a good time and celebrate who you are individually.
02:00And I think Blackpool's a town that will embrace us, and that makes me excited.
02:04For the people at Blackpool who are watching or reading this, what would you say to them
02:08to encourage them to buy those last tickets for Unfortunate?
02:13You know you want to have a good time.
02:15You know you want to bring your friends and just enjoy a night out away from all of the
02:20troubles of the world.
02:22And we can offer you that.
02:23We can offer you a fun night that's a little bit naughty and a whole lot fun.
02:30So come and have a good time with us.
02:32We think you'll love it.
02:35We really do want you to leave our show fully embracing everything that is yours individually
02:42to offer.
02:44We want you to love who you are and celebrate who you are.
02:49I think it's really admirable in the world that would rather try and put you in tiny
02:54boxes to fit the mold that here we are trying to tell you to do the opposite, break out
03:00of those molds and just celebrate your individual joys and sorrows.
03:05And I realize that not every story you think you know, you might not know fully.
03:12You know what I mean?
03:13There's always another side to a story, and maybe we can open your minds a little bit
03:18more and share something that's maybe silly and funny, but also offers a chance to just
03:26take a moment to pause to go, am I seeing the whole story or is there more I should
03:32learn?
03:33And I think that's something we should all do in the world and try and live better lives.
