Israel lashes out at South Africa's case before the UN's top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) describing it as "distorted" and saying Rafah is a "stronghold" for Hamas. The comments by Israel's representatives at the ICJ come as Pretoria urges the court to order a halt to Israel's ground offensive in Rafah. The Hamas attack on October 7 resulted in the death of more than 1,170 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Out of 252 people taken hostage that day, 128 are still being held inside the Gaza Strip, including 38 who the army says are dead.

At least 35,303 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war broke out, according to data provided by the health ministry of Hamas-run Gaza. Israeli military says 279 soldiers have been killed in the Gaza military campaign since the start of the ground offensive on October 27

00:00 Rafah, in particular, is a focal point for ongoing terrorist activity.
00:26 It is a stronghold for Hamas's operatives, with several battalions belonging to the Rafah
00:32 brigades entrenched in the area.
00:35 If anybody should be told that "enough is enough," it is truly South Africa, and not
00:41 Israel.
00:44 At what point do we say "enough" to South Africa's repeated attempts to exploit the
00:48 provisional measure procedure of this court in such a vile and cynical manner?
01:07 Mr. President, Members of the Court, There is no doubt that this war is tragic and has
01:17 caused great suffering on both sides.
01:21 Again, this is Hamas's doing.
01:27 South Africa provides an account that is not only incredibly partial, it is also distorted.
01:37 The State of Israel requests the Court to reject the request for the modification and
01:43 indication of provisional measures submitted by the Republic of South Africa.
