00:08 I met Brian on the 2008 campaign for Obama.
00:12 Sandra, what do you look for in a guest?

00:17 We found out Brian had ALS
00:20 the day we came home from the hospital
00:22 with our second daughter.
00:23 I had gone to a neurologist
00:25 for what I thought was a standard checkup.
00:28 The doctor said, "On average, people live six months
00:31 after they're diagnosed."
00:33 Every doctor we saw said the same thing --
00:36 "I'm sorry, but we can't help you."
00:39 The system is broken for this disease.
00:41 When you're told that the world you believed
00:43 you were gonna live in is no longer there,
00:46 you have to either choose to curl up into a ball or act.
00:50 [ Cheers and applause ]
00:52 So I turned to Sandra and said,
00:54 "I think I want to start an ALS non-profit."
00:57 And her response was, "[Bleep] no."
00:59 [ Laughs ]
01:00 And he ignored me, like he always does.
01:02 ♪ I think I'm gonna die ♪
01:04 If you want to defeat ALS,
01:05 you need everyone working together.
01:07 They took this extraordinary challenge
01:10 and said, "We're gonna go out and make things happen."
01:13 If we're able to untangle ALS,
01:15 we might be able to help others.
01:18 I am in awe of Brian Wallach.

01:22 and take care of the next person that gets diagnosed.
