00:00 Hello everyone, I'm Jacob Kaufman, I'm the Nerd in the Street, and today we're unboxing
00:03 the Logitech MX Master 3S.
00:06 [Music]
00:13 Okay everybody, I've done a couple of Logitech mouse unboxings in the past.
00:17 I know it seems really trivial and just not super on topic or useful on the channel, but
00:22 I did an unboxing many years ago of the Logitech M310 wireless mouse, and it was the second
00:28 M310 that I owned.
00:30 And a few years back when I was just starting college, I did an unboxing of the Logitech
00:34 MX Master 1, or just MX Master as it was called at the time.
00:38 I'm going to go ahead and turn it off here so I don't stop my audio or anything.
00:42 So this is the mouse that I've primarily been using with my daily driver computer for the
00:46 last, what, I got this in 2016, so about 8 years I've been using this thing.
00:52 Just under 8 years.
00:54 And that video was really scuffed, and it was a hard one to record because it was right
00:58 after I had moved into a new space, you know, downsized my space, heading into college.
01:03 So that video was a doozy, if you've seen it.
01:07 This mouse recently failed, sort of.
01:10 It's still been working pretty well over the years.
01:12 I do have to admit I was having to charge it a little bit more often than I would have
01:15 liked.
01:17 This is a rechargeable mouse, and the new one is as well.
01:20 And I like that because if you're going to have a wireless mouse, you know, at least
01:23 you can have it be rechargeable and not be wasting AA batteries or whatever every single
01:28 time that it runs out.
01:29 With my M310 mice, my older Logitech mice that use AA batteries, it actually wasn't
01:33 too big of a problem because they did last for, I mean, a year or two on a single set
01:38 of AA batteries.
01:39 But it's just a lot simpler to be able to plug it in and recharge.
01:42 However, I was having to recharge this thing, it felt like, every week or two.
01:46 I was having to plug it in, and then I'd wait, you know, a day for it to completely charge
01:50 up, and then I'd unplug it.
01:51 So this mouse was on its way out, and then recently, one of the buttons actually started
01:55 malfunctioning.
01:57 The MX Master, this is Logitech's high-end wireless mouse, if you really don't know what
02:01 this is.
02:02 And it's a pretty simple mouse in terms of input.
02:04 It's not one of those fancy gaming mice with a bunch of extra buttons, because I would
02:07 just hit those on accident and, you know, do things I don't want to, I would assume.
02:11 But yeah, this mouse, it's got a left click, a right click, it's got your scroll wheel.
02:15 There's a little button underneath the scroll wheel, and I had mine set up to switch that
02:19 between the free scrolling and the ratcheted mode.
02:21 One thing I really like about the MX Master series is that it's got a separate horizontal
02:26 scroll wheel on the side that you use your thumb with that, so you don't have to worry
02:30 about tilting the top scroll wheel and possibly accidentally clicking it or whatever when
02:33 you're horizontally scrolling.
02:35 There are previous and next buttons on this mouse that I never once used on purpose, and
02:41 I did hit those on accident a handful of times over the years, but that's the kind of thing
02:45 where I don't like extra buttons on my mice.
02:48 But this mouse also had a thumb button here.
02:51 It's gonna be difficult to show with this camera angle.
02:54 I'm gonna move the camera to the desktop in a moment so we can actually do the unboxing,
02:57 but there's a thumb button, and you're normally holding the mouse sort of like this.
03:02 It's a right-handed only mouse.
03:03 Logitech has never made a left-handed version of this mouse, so, you know, if I was left-handed,
03:07 I'd be kind of annoyed at that, but as a right-handed person, this is fine.
03:11 So you hold the mouse like this, and you've got it on your surface, and then you can push
03:15 your thumb down towards the desk to actually trigger another button in this mouse.
03:20 I did use that button a tiny bit.
03:22 I had it mapped, I think, to my WorkSpaces grid, my virtual desktop grid or something
03:27 like that on my Linux desktop for a while, but I didn't use that super often.
03:32 Have not used it intentionally for the past few years at least.
03:35 And it was actually funny.
03:36 I was online playing a video game with some of my friends fairly recently, and I kept
03:40 having accidental inputs.
03:42 It seemed like the game - at first, it just seemed like it was freezing up, but then I
03:46 noticed there's a menu in the game that comes up when you hold Tab on the keyboard, and
03:51 that menu was flickering sometimes when the game was freezing.
03:55 And so at first I thought something was wrong with my keyboard, where it was sending the
03:57 Tab key when I wasn't actually pressing it, but after troubleshooting and, you know, using
04:02 a couple of tools on my computer to try and see what inputs it was reading, I figured
04:06 out it was the mouse doing that.
04:08 The thumb button on this mouse - I've known this for the entire time I've had it - it
04:12 uses keyboard shortcuts basically to send that mouse button.
04:16 There's not a dedicated input on the computer that listens for a thumb button, so this mouse
04:21 just emulated a keyboard shortcut - a complicated keyboard shortcut - when you pushed it.
04:26 And then the computer can listen for that keyboard shortcut, and then you can map that
04:29 shortcut to whatever you want the thumb button to do.
04:31 Now what's funny was this button actually failed, and it's basically begun triggering
04:35 when I'm hardly pushing any pressure on it at all.
04:38 I used to have to actually click down until I felt the click in order to actually use
04:43 that thumb button, but it was actually just triggering from me moving the mouse around
04:47 just for my thumb being set on the button like it kind of has to be when you're using
04:50 the mouse.
04:51 So you can see - I don't want to show you this too close up because it is kind of gross,
04:54 it's a very old mouse and it's gotten dirty.
04:56 I have tried to keep it clean over the years, but the rubber texture, you know, it's hard
05:00 to always get it entirely clean.
05:02 But that thumb button, that plastic has actually started to crack a little bit.
05:06 Let me see if I can get the camera to focus a little bit, there we go.
05:09 So you may be able to see that that thumb button has cracked, that rubber covering over
05:14 it has cracked.
05:15 So yeah, I do have to admit, I have been fairly rough with this mouse over the years.
05:19 I think this mouse could have lasted at least 10 years if I was treating it well.
05:23 This has been my daily driver mouse, and yeah, it has, you know, it's taken its share of
05:27 tumbles during moves and events and stuff over the years.
05:30 Despite this mouse being broken right now, it did live up to my expectations in terms
05:35 of longevity.
05:36 So yeah, when I started looking for a replacement mouse, since I can't have that accidental
05:39 input going all the time, the first thing I did was look up what the current MX Master
05:43 is, and I knew that Logitech had released an MX Master 2 a while back, and then a 3.
05:48 The current newest MX Master mouse is the 3S that we're unboxing today.
05:52 I did also take a look at a Razer mouse, I think it was the Razer Basilisk it was called.
05:58 I had used one of those that a co-worker in the workplace had set up at a shared computer
06:02 many years ago when I was working at my technical college.
06:05 And I liked that mouse.
06:07 I did look up Linux compatibility, and apparently that newest Razer Basilisk mouse is not easily
06:13 configurable if at all on Linux.
06:16 And so the MX Master mouse has always played really well with Linux.
06:19 I can actually use the extra buttons and remap them in Linux if I want to.
06:23 And it was also about half the price of that Razer mouse.
06:26 This is a fairly expensive mouse, the 3S that we're unboxing, it was $100 as of right now,
06:31 direct from Logitech.
06:32 However, that Razer Basilisk mouse was like $200, and I think it was on sale too, so normally
06:37 it might be more than that.
06:38 So yeah, I went with the Logitech, went with the tried and true.
06:41 I am going to miss the original MX Master mouse.
06:44 It had this, they called it like a sculpted, it was basically this geometric design.
06:49 Gotta get my face out of the shot so it focuses on that.
06:52 This geometric design with all those little, it's like polygons, you see.
06:56 And I really, I did like that design a lot.
07:00 And I am going to miss that.
07:01 It has worn down over the years.
07:03 It used to be more pronounced when this mouse was brand new.
07:06 Now they're more rounded anyway, just because of how old the mouse is.
07:09 The new one doesn't have that polygon look.
07:11 I think the 3S has at least added back some texture.
07:15 I think the 2 was like almost completely smooth.
07:17 But the 3 and the 3S, it's got an angled thing going on.
07:20 So yeah, that's what we're doing today.
07:21 I'm unboxing a mouse in case you're interested in that mouse.
07:25 So let's bring the camera in and go ahead and do this.
07:27 All right, and today instead of worrying about getting the perfect camera angle, I'm just
07:31 going to sort of compromise with this diagonal angle.
07:34 That way I can actually see what I'm doing and not have to reach around the camera.
07:37 Hopefully this will be all right for you guys.
07:39 If you watched my previous mouse unboxings, I think it's still an improvement.
07:43 So I've got two boxes here.
07:44 Logitech actually sent me out a free carrying case.
07:48 They're just doing that with everyone who orders the mouse right now.
07:50 You get a free case, which I wasn't going to say no to.
07:53 I do think it's very weird they sent them separately.
07:55 I actually got two different FedEx tracking numbers for them.
07:58 They showed up on the same day.
08:00 That happens a lot where companies send stuff out, they end up on the same truck, even though
08:03 they were technically shipped separately.
08:04 But yeah, I'm not sure which one of these actually contains the mouse and which one
08:08 contains the carrying bag.
08:10 They're both kind of a generic weight.
08:13 I think this might be the carrying bag based on the weight, but this is a weird size for
08:17 the mouse.
08:18 I don't know.
08:19 We'll go ahead and let's open the flatter box first.
08:20 Let's see what's in there.
08:21 Do I need a knife for this unboxing?
08:24 Let's see here.
08:25 How do we even open this box up?
08:27 It looks like there's a tab here on the bottom.
08:30 This is just going to tear the box.
08:32 This does not look like a reusable box at all.
08:37 So maybe that's okay.
08:40 This tab here is literally just going to tear the cardboard.
08:45 There's one on the bottom too.
08:46 We got these tabs that don't actually...
08:48 I mean, that seems like it's intended to tear the cardboard.
08:56 So if we just...
08:57 Oh yeah, no, there's a strip in here.
08:58 So it is intended to tear.
09:01 That strip there, that plastic sort of stick on, that is to rip the cardboard up.
09:06 So this is 100% the intended method of opening this thing up.
09:10 We just tear right through the FedEx label there.
09:14 Okay, well the strip is torn through.
09:19 Box is still closed.
09:20 So let's see what the next step would be.
09:23 Maybe we...
09:24 Okay, this is a jigsaw puzzle of a box.
09:27 So I'm going to go ahead and try tearing it along the perforated corners now.
09:31 Again, when you see perforated corners and stuff like this, it's not like you're going
09:36 to be reusing the box.
09:37 Hopefully I don't have to send the mouse back.
09:39 It was, you know, it was a hundred bucks.
09:41 It's not the biggest purchase I've made in the past couple of years, but obviously not
09:44 something...
09:45 Not like the $20 M310 mouse or the $10, however much that was at the time.
09:51 All right.
09:52 So we've opened the outer box and inside of that, it does look like there's a more traditional
09:57 cardboard.
09:58 Oh no, this is all one.
10:00 Those are either glued together really well, or this is all actually one box assembly.
10:04 This is really weird.
10:05 Wow.
10:06 We got more perforation inside.
10:09 All right.
10:12 Okay.
10:13 And this is packed actually very poorly.
10:16 This is very poor packaging.
10:18 Because you've got all this empty space.
10:19 That means anytime that this box was shifting around, the mouse was moving around inside
10:24 the box.
10:25 There's no bubble wrap or anything, you know, even just paper wrap or, you know, something
10:30 hard, not compressible like bubble wrap, but even just some cheap paper packaging would
10:34 have been better than nothing here.
10:37 But surprisingly, the mouse box does not look too beat up.
10:41 So I'm going to go ahead and set that down there.
10:42 I'm going to get the large cardboard box out of the frame.
10:46 So it looks like I did choose correctly, I guess, question mark with getting the mouse
10:51 out before the carrying bag.
10:53 So here's what the box looks like.
10:55 This may be a slightly smaller box than the BMX Master Mouse came in.
10:59 That was many years ago.
11:00 I actually, I probably should have actually watched that video before I recorded this
11:04 one instead of just confirming that it existed.
11:07 I just did a search on my website for Logitech to see what the other one was called, make
11:11 sure it was actually an M310.
11:14 But I'm going to go ahead and just slice into the, into the box here.
11:18 I recall the other one being a fancier, like, I think it might have had something going
11:21 on with plastic and like display, like you could open up a flap and see the mouse inside
11:27 of it.
11:28 I seem to recall that being a thing with that product.
11:30 But we'll go ahead and before I start to open this up, I guess you can see on the back,
11:34 we just has some, you know, some basic info about the product.
11:37 This is an 8K DPI sensor.
11:41 The sensor is actually up there with some gaming mice.
11:44 This isn't technically, I wouldn't call it a gaming mouse.
11:46 I think it's more for productivity.
11:48 But yeah, like I've talked to gamers and when I say, oh, you know, I've just got an MX Master,
11:52 I've heard people say, you know, okay, that's a decent mouse even if you're gaming.
11:55 Obviously I don't do a lot of gaming.
11:57 This is just for productivity for me.
11:59 And by the way, I did get the black version.
12:00 I think the default version is a gray.
12:02 There's also a white and a black.
12:04 See with the, the older MX Master, there was really only one color that it came in and
12:08 I liked this color.
12:09 It was sort of a faux, you know, it's like a gold color.
12:12 This is plastic of course.
12:13 But yeah, I really, I did like the sort of warmer color scheme of this old one.
12:17 The new one you can see it's more silver and we're going to get into it here in just a
12:20 second but, but yeah, I did go ahead and opt for the slightly darker quote unquote black
12:25 version.
12:26 They were all the same price.
12:27 So you're not going to get charged differently for wanting white or black or whatever.
12:32 All right, so let's try and do this again.
12:34 That's I started pulling this tab at the top earlier.
12:37 Okay, that does sort of get the box coming open and then, okay, there we go.
12:44 Little bit, little bit scuffed.
12:45 I tore the top of the box a tiny bit, but with this, how thick this plastic sort of
12:51 hanger piece is that seems unavoidable.
12:54 Okay, so this entire piece slides out, nothing else in that retail box.
12:59 Turn this around.
13:00 All right, this really is such a jigsaw puzzle of a box because now we're opening it from
13:05 the bottom and we're flipping it up and here's the mouse.
13:10 Yeah, yeah, this is a fairly certain this is a smaller package and more simple pack.
13:16 Well, I don't know if more simple is the right way to describe it, but it is a smaller package
13:19 than the original MX Master came in.
13:21 So here's the new mouse.
13:23 That is quite nice.
13:24 Cool.
13:25 So as you can see, like I said, we've got sort of just strips this time.
13:30 The older MX Master, let me reach over my microphone here.
13:34 The older MX Master on your left now, as you can see, it's got that sort of polygon angled
13:41 look going on.
13:43 The 3S just has strips running from the front to the back of the mouse.
13:48 So no fancy polygons.
13:50 Little bit, I don't know, sleeker, a little bit less characteristic, less charismatic.
13:55 As you can see, we still do have our thumb scroll wheel.
13:58 It is a little bit wider this time and it is sort of an accent color on the entire thing
14:03 rather than just the bands like it had on the old mouse.
14:06 It looks like it's actually all metal or plastic this time rather than having that rubber on
14:11 the actual scroll wheel on the old mouse.
14:14 So it looks like that's the same for the scroll wheel on the top as well.
14:18 As you can see, this new scroll wheel, it's got just this hard material, that plastic
14:23 or metal.
14:24 I actually do think that's metal and it's got that on the entire wheel.
14:26 There's no rubber like there was on the old mouse.
14:29 And that rubber, as you can possibly see, that was part of what made keeping the mouse
14:33 clean kind of difficult.
14:35 It was hard to clean that gap between the ridges in the rubber.
14:38 We still do have ridges on the new mouse, but since it's metal, I don't know, dirt and
14:42 stuff might come out, wiping it down a little bit easier.
14:45 We'll have to see.
14:46 In terms of color comparison, since I did opt for a different than normal color on the
14:50 new one, I thought maybe the gray they were talking about that is standard now might have
14:54 been what I had on the old one when they only had one color.
14:57 But this black actually looks, I mean, to me, I can't really tell a difference, which
15:03 is good.
15:04 Yeah, so their new standard gray is actually, it must be lighter than the original MX Master
15:09 had as an option.
15:12 So yeah, okay, on the bottom here, we do have a sticker.
15:14 Okay, and they're talking about this new Logi Bolt thing.
15:18 So this is interesting.
15:20 So the MX Master, it's got this tiny little icon next to the Bluetooth icon on the top
15:25 here.
15:26 If the camera is interested in that, there we are.
15:30 That icon on the left, that is the icon for Logitech's Unify receiver, which was all the
15:36 rage back when I got this.
15:38 I've actually got my Logitech touch pad.
15:40 I've been using it as a kind of a backup since that mouse kind of went faulty.
15:44 And it's got an orange icon right here.
15:47 And you can see that is the same icon.
15:49 It's just orange this time.
15:50 And that is, like I said, for the Unify receiver, the idea being that you only needed one receiver
15:55 to connect up different devices like this mouse, this touch pad.
15:57 If you had a Logitech keyboard, it would use the same receiver.
16:00 And I've actually got that receiver right here, right here in my keyboard.
16:06 So there's that orange icon.
16:09 So it was neat because like I said, you could really pair and unpair.
16:13 Before Logitech kind of came out with this, at least with their stuff, you had one receiver
16:18 per device.
16:19 And if you lost your receiver, I mean, you might be kind of screwed.
16:22 Eventually they made it so that you could pair different receivers with different devices.
16:25 But Unify was the, you know, it was pretty simple tech that just, it made it a lot simpler
16:29 in terms of if you saw that icon on a device, you knew that it would work with any receiver
16:34 that has that same icon.
16:36 And then over the years, it used to be Windows only that you could actually pair and unpair.
16:41 Pretty quickly Linux fans did sort of reverse engineer that.
16:45 And we've got a pretty good application called Solar that is useful for pairing and unpairing
16:50 and repairing Logitech devices and also configuring them.
16:53 Now this new device though, this does not use Unify anymore, which kind of does defeat
16:57 the purpose of standardization.
16:59 But hey, I get that the standards do have to evolve.
17:02 They've replaced Unify with this new one called Bolt.
17:04 And from what I understand, the old Unify receivers actually used to be a different
17:08 tech than Bluetooth.
17:10 This was a, I think a wireless band more similar to actual Wi-Fi.
17:14 Now the Bolt receiver, from what I understand, it's supposed to be faster.
17:18 It is also supposed to be more secure because I know in the past, you know, 5, 10 years,
17:23 people have started saying, "Hey, if we have wireless input devices, people can theoretically
17:27 sniff all of our inputs and get, you know, passwords or just other sensitive stuff."
17:31 So Bolt, I think it's got new encryption technology.
17:33 I am also fairly certain that it's just Bluetooth now.
17:36 It's no longer using a separate wireless band.
17:38 You're using the same wireless frequencies, whether you're using Bluetooth directly to
17:42 your computer's Bluetooth card, or if you're using the Bolt receiver.
17:46 I'm probably still going to use the Bolt receiver myself just to keep things simple in terms
17:49 of input.
17:50 But yeah, before I take the sticker off the bottom of this mouse, I am going to get out
17:54 something which is crazy for me.
17:56 I have a mouse pad here, and this is a mouse pad that I got for free from a coworker at
18:02 my previous job.
18:03 It must have been about five years ago when he actually handed these out to us.
18:07 Five years today, I was not at my current job yet.
18:09 And yeah, this is just a plain black mouse pad.
18:11 I thought that it was green.
18:13 I was looking around my place for this because I thought he had a bunch of different colors
18:16 and he gave a different color to all of us.
18:18 And that might have still been the case.
18:19 I might have just picked black.
18:20 But one of my family members has a light green mouse pad, and I totally, like my brain just
18:25 completely melded those memories together.
18:27 And I thought I had a bright green mouse pad laying around.
18:30 So it was really hard to find this thing because it was at the bottom of a bag, and that bag
18:33 was black.
18:34 So this just totally blended in with it.
18:36 But yeah, I'm actually going to start using, I'm going to see how it goes at least.
18:39 I'm going to start using a mouse pad with this thing.
18:41 Obviously, I'm going to take the mouse pad out of the bag.
18:43 My MX Master, I never used a mouse pad with it, and it wasn't really an issue.
18:48 I did at one point damage some of the pad on one side here.
18:53 And actually, it wasn't like accidental damage.
18:56 I was trying to get this pad off of the bottom of the mouse.
18:59 Because you can actually open these up, the MX Masters.
19:02 You can see there's a couple screws up here at the top.
19:05 But to actually open the entire thing, I was trying to get in there and repair something
19:10 to do with the scroll wheel, which was totally, it was a blunt force impact that harmed it.
19:15 It was not a spontaneous failure.
19:17 But I was trying to open it up.
19:19 Well, some of the screws are underneath these pads, and these pads are sort of glued on.
19:22 So you either need to use alcohol and be really careful to dissolve the glue, and then take
19:27 those off.
19:28 Or you just do what I did, which is I peeled half of it off, trying to find where the screw
19:31 was, and then ended up bailing out.
19:34 After that, the mouse slid a little bit less smoothly on my desk.
19:38 But yeah, I've never really cared about mouse pads.
19:43 Being not a gamer, I just need a mouse input that works.
19:46 And Laser Mice are really great, because they work on almost any surface.
19:50 You know, the Bolt, or the MX Master 3S, supposedly should work on glass, even.
19:54 I'm not sure if the old one did or not.
19:56 But the new one is supposed to work on glass, if you've got a glass desk or a glass table.
20:00 The frequencies that the laser sensor is sending out are not ones that will just pass through
20:06 the glass and not be bounced back anymore.
20:09 I'm doing this partially to protect the mouse, since it's a brand new mouse.
20:12 I'm thinking, you know, I'm going to use a mouse pad.
20:15 I'm also doing this partially for the desk.
20:17 Now this desk, I also got this desk about five years ago.
20:21 Actually no, I got it longer than that.
20:22 I got this desk in early 2017.
20:25 Yeah, so about seven years ago, maybe a little over seven years ago, I got this sit-stand
20:29 desk from Ikea.
20:31 My mother actually got it for me.
20:33 And yeah, this desk, it's been a champ over the years.
20:36 It has taken a little bit of a beating.
20:37 I've actually started taking Sharpie and filling in some of the dents and stuff on this desk
20:41 to make them appear less just on camera and in the corner of my eye.
20:46 But running my hand across the desk, I can still feel where dents and stuff have occurred.
20:51 And some of the finish of the desk is starting to wear off, partially just because I'm always
20:57 moving my mouse around, you know, and I can sort of sometimes feel a splintering.
21:01 I haven't actually had legit splinters, but it sort of feels like I'm going to get splinters
21:05 sometimes, moving my palm around and moving the mouse around just on this wood desk with
21:09 the finish coming off slowly over time.
21:12 So just to protect both the mouse and the desk, two for one, I am going to go ahead
21:17 and get this mouse pad out finally.
21:19 I did look at like larger desk mats, you know, those ones that go under your keyboard and
21:25 everything.
21:26 This is not an important part of the unboxing, so I was doing it mostly off camera.
21:30 But yeah, I figured I'm going to see how this goes.
21:32 If I get super annoyed with like running into the edges of the mouse pad or things like
21:36 that, then I might bail on this.
21:39 I might put the mouse pad back in the box and just go back to doing this directly on
21:44 the desk.
21:45 But, you know, for now, like I said, brand new mouse, what better time to start with
21:49 a mouse pad than when you've got a brand new mouse?
21:51 Yeah, I will have to see.
21:53 It is going to make things more awkward sometimes.
21:54 I'm going to have to see how much I actually stick to it.
21:57 But yeah, we'll move this closer to the camera just for the video here.
22:00 So now that we've got a mouse pad down to protect the mouse and the desk, let's go ahead
22:04 and peel this sticker off.
22:06 And it's explaining how to connect a mouse to your computer, which I'm going to be honest,
22:09 I know I'm not a gamer, but I do think I know how to connect a mouse to a computer.
22:16 All right.
22:17 So there's the sticker coming off there.
22:18 I don't know if you could hear that or not.
22:20 The microphone was not pointed at it.
22:22 So sorry for you, ASMR folks.
22:23 I am going to stick the sticker here.
22:26 It's going to be backwards compared to where the indentation in the box is here.
22:31 But just put that there for safekeeping, I guess.
22:34 And then here is our new receiver that's got the new icon on it.
22:39 And that is the Bolt icon right there.
22:42 And it looks like it's green, sort of a mint green, maybe a little bit darker than mint,
22:46 like a matcha green maybe.
22:48 So that is your new icon.
22:49 Anything with this Bolt icon will connect to a receiver with the Bolt icon.
22:54 These should be paired out of the box.
22:55 Hoping it is.
22:56 Otherwise, Solar, that Linux has, is able to pair and repair these newer Bolt devices
23:03 as well.
23:04 So that is everything we've got in our mouse box here.
23:06 Oh, nope, it's not.
23:07 It's not.
23:08 Okay.
23:09 So I was just about to comment that there's no documentation in here.
23:11 Yeah, this plastic's glued down to the bottom of the box.
23:14 This wedge at the top, I think that was just to hold the mouse in place.
23:17 Doesn't feel like there's anything in there.
23:18 Yeah, the MX Master 1, definitely, I think it had some promo documents and stuff in it.
23:23 Might not have as much promo here, but we do have just a little bit here, a little bit
23:31 of stuff.
23:32 We've got a, ah, USB-C. That is one other difference between the old mouse.
23:37 This older MX Master was USB, well, I guess it would be, what, micro USB?
23:42 It's the same one that older Android phones used to have.
23:44 And then the new MX Master mouse has USB Type-C. That is actually really useful, you know,
23:51 because once again, these days, my Android phones, they've all got USB-C on them.
23:55 iPhones are going to be moving to USB-C. So if you're out and about, you know, this mouse,
23:59 it does have some features like being able to connect to three different computers.
24:02 So you can grab this thing and hit the button and now it's connected to your laptop.
24:06 You can take these things, especially with the carrying case that I'm going to unbox
24:09 next.
24:10 If you are out and about and you need to charge your mouse, it's easier to just be able to
24:13 plug your cell phone charger into it.
24:15 And so it's nice that it's USB-C now.
24:18 So this is a USB Type-A to Type-C cable.
24:22 This is, it's black on both sides.
24:24 So I assume, you know, USB 2.0.
24:26 We do have a little bit of a, got their current Logi logo there.
24:31 I am going to miss the wireless or the MX Master mouse that had the original Logitech
24:37 logo on it.
24:38 It's super faded.
24:39 But if the camera focuses, can I tap to focus on this camera?
24:43 Yeah, I can.
24:45 All right.
24:46 So you can see right there in the light that original Logitech logo from before they started
24:52 rebranding.
24:53 It's still Logitech, but their new logo is like an abbreviation of Logitech.
24:58 It's just Logi.
25:00 And they've kind of gotten rid of that logo in favor of just having Logi written on their
25:04 devices as you can see right here, not faded off yet since this mouse is brand new.
25:08 But yeah, we've got that same thing written on the USB Type-C side of this cable.
25:13 The cable comes with a Velcro strap that is permanently attached on one side.
25:19 I'm pretty sure I'm still using the original one that came with the MX Master to charge
25:24 the MX Master.
25:25 So I'll probably be keeping this thing around if only for charging purposes.
25:29 We do have a little bit of documentation in here as well.
25:32 This is a very small text.
25:34 This is battery removal for recycling.
25:36 So probably something they're legally required to show you.
25:38 And it does look like, yeah, I mean, I don't see any.
25:42 Oh, I see one screw on the bottom of this new mouse, but you're still going to have
25:46 to take off the feet in order to get to the screws as this is showing you.
25:50 So not super easy to do without damaging the mouse.
25:52 That is the one con.
25:53 If I had to rate this thing, I'd say 4.5 out of 5.
25:57 It'd be nice if you didn't have to take the glued feet off in order to get to the insides.
26:01 This is safety compliance and warranty information.
26:04 Since it's a wireless device, there's just some stuff they've got to tell you.
26:08 I avoid wireless in a lot of my life.
26:10 I'm always surprised that I don't care about it with mice, but I guess the convenience
26:13 just gets to me there.
26:14 When it comes to mice, what does this thing say?
26:18 This product is intended to be supplied by a listed/certified power supply rated 5V DC,
26:23 500mA minimum, TMA maximum ambient temperature 45 degrees Celsius, and altitude 2000 meters.
26:31 If needed, please contact the manufacturer for further information.
26:34 They don't say Logitech.
26:35 They say the manufacturer with capital M for some reason.
26:39 So that's just legalese.
26:41 Interesting to hear about the altitude limit, but I don't think I'm above that even here
26:45 in the Denver area.
26:46 One last piece of documentation.
26:47 This is all that's left in that cardboard rectangle.
26:50 This is more of a cardboard thing.
26:53 So this is your promo.
26:54 Whatever we had for promo with the older Logitech MX Master, this is what they've gone down
26:59 to.
27:00 They have scaled it down to this tiny little 2" x 5" or whatever card, 2" x 4" maybe.
27:06 They've got pictures of devices including the white version of this mouse and other
27:10 things that I don't own.
27:12 And then on the back, "Unleash your power to create, make, and do.
27:16 Add an MX Mechanical or MX Mechanical Mini."
27:19 So they're talking about their keyboards, which, you know, I've actually thought about
27:22 some of their keyboards.
27:23 I don't think I'd want the mechanical one.
27:24 I like chiclet keyboards if I was going to get one from a brand like Logitech.
27:28 If I was going to get a mechanical, I'd probably get like a System76 Launch or something, since
27:32 it's got open source firmware and a really easy to use app for it and everything.
27:36 It's talking about the Brio Ultra HD Pro webcam, and I have no idea if that's the same Brio
27:41 as the one that I've got or not.
27:42 When I got it, it was just called the Brio.
27:44 It was the first 4K webcam that Logitech made.
27:48 They're also talking about their headset, their spotlight presentation remote.
27:51 Oh, one of those PowerPoint remotes, I guess.
27:53 I didn't realize Logitech made one of those.
27:55 No, that's the Brio that I just pointed to.
27:58 Oh, here's the remote.
27:59 I was covering it with my thumb.
28:00 Yeah, I've got a remote that's got more buttons than that.
28:04 As I was talking about how I don't care about buttons, PowerPoint remotes are different,
28:07 though.
28:08 I'm going to pack everything up into here.
28:11 Sorry, I should have said LibreOffice Impress remotes are different, of course.
28:17 All the documentation is back in the box.
28:19 I'm going to leave the cable out for now.
28:23 Box is ... This actually, it's not a super annoying box.
28:26 The most annoying thing might be this tab sticking off the top.
28:29 I am glad that it's at least semi-rectangular.
28:31 It's mostly rectangular other than that tab.
28:34 The MX MasterBox, I recall it being a more ... Like I said, it had a plastic molded with
28:39 a mouse on the front, and it was not a rectangular box, so it was harder to keep around in boxes
28:44 and on shelves and stuff like that.
28:46 I won't bother putting that all the way closed again just yet.
28:49 Before we actually try the mouse, let's go ahead and let's grab that other box up here.
28:53 Let's see what they're throwing me in terms of the carrying bag.
28:57 All right, this is a wider strip, helping you tear this one open, so that's a more clean
29:04 opening as you can see.
29:06 But then we still got to pull the perforated edges apart in order to get this outer box
29:12 open.
29:13 This is cardboard, so at least you can recycle it after you're done ripping it apart.
29:18 Well, actually, corrugated cardboard like this is not always recyclable, now that I
29:23 think about it.
29:24 All right.
29:25 So here is the ... All right, so the MX Travel case.
29:28 This is a carrying case.
29:30 Bump the mic there.
29:31 This is a carrying case for the mouse, and the box is definitely bigger than the box
29:35 for the mouse.
29:36 I will go ahead and finish closing that over here.
29:39 This is something I paid $0 for, and they used more packaging for it.
29:43 It is taller than the box for the mouse.
29:46 It is thicker than the box for the mouse.
29:50 It's just ... Yeah.
29:52 It's also slightly wider than the box for the mouse.
29:55 That is any ecologically friendly stuff Logitech may have been trying to claim.
30:01 I'm not getting on them about this, but if you are somebody who's going to, yeah, the
30:07 smaller box and the cardboard and everything probably offset completely by having this
30:12 shipped separately in a separate cardboard outer box in a larger inner box.
30:17 But this, as you can see, it says MX Travel Case.
30:20 It doesn't just hold your mouse.
30:21 It can hold a few different accessories.
30:23 Obviously, it's a bag, so as far as I'm aware, there's no DRM that will zap you if you try
30:28 to put something non-Logitech in here.
30:32 You can put chargers for your phone and stuff in here too.
30:35 Yeah.
30:36 This didn't really affect my purchasing decision, but I did think, "Oh, that's nice that I'll
30:42 be able to have that if I do need to move the mouse."
30:45 It's funny.
30:46 The MX Master, I've moved a number of times over the past five years or so.
30:51 I moved into an apartment in St. Louis.
30:53 I moved between different places in St. Louis, at least three different places, and I've
30:56 been to at least three different living places here in the Denver area as well.
31:01 Every time I move, also, I've taken this equipment back and forth between Denver and St. Louis
31:06 a number of times for productions.
31:08 Every single time I move this old mouse, it and my Apple keyboard, I don't have boxes
31:14 or cases for either of these.
31:15 I do have the box for this back in St. Louis, but it was huge, so I didn't keep it around
31:19 with the mouse.
31:20 These were always just sitting loose on the top of the box.
31:25 I'd have my displays in their boxes, my computer in its box, and then this stuff is just stuck
31:31 on top.
31:32 Driving in a car, it's just bouncing around every time the car goes around a turn.
31:37 If I was going to take this overseas or something, it would have just been stuck loose in a suitcase.
31:42 Yeah, it's kind of nice just for when I do need to take the mouse places.
31:48 It might sound kind of silly, but yeah, we do have ... I'm not going to go through ... I
31:52 guess I am going to go through the documentation.
31:54 This is ... That looks like Chinese.
31:58 Chinese document on the top there with no English translation anywhere.
32:01 I don't know what that one is.
32:03 Here we've got important safety, compliance, and warranty information for your bag.
32:09 I guess telling you not to suffocate yourself on the bag.
32:12 This is a larger warranty document than the mouse had.
32:15 Look how far this unfolds.
32:20 That is ... This is all for a bag.
32:23 Wow.
32:24 Okay.
32:25 Why do they need CE ... Why do they need a CE rating for the bag?
32:29 I know the EU is bureaucratic, but I'm 70% sure that you don't need your microfiber bag
32:36 to be CE rated in order to sell it in Europe.
32:39 I could be wrong about that, and if I am, God help us.
32:41 All right, we had a little small thread come off of the bag right off the bat, but just
32:46 a manufacturing thing, I think.
32:48 Yeah, so we've got ... It's a little bit darker colored on the sides.
32:52 They don't have different colors of these.
32:54 They sell the mouse in white and black, but this one, it's just this multicolored thing.
32:57 So on the sides, it's dark.
32:59 Front and back, it's light.
33:00 On the inside, the separators are also dark.
33:03 And these are Velcro, so you can pull them off.
33:05 Oh, and it looks like there are permanent Velcro strips stuck to the side of the bag
33:09 or sort of sewed in.
33:10 I can't see stitching, but it does not feel like it comes off.
33:14 Okay, but yeah, there are basically two different separators in here, so you can pull this apart.
33:21 I'm not going to bother.
33:22 I don't want to rip this entire thing apart just to show you that it can be reconfigured,
33:25 but it can be reconfigured.
33:27 It seems like it would limit how much you can really reconfigure it if the Velcro doesn't
33:32 stick to the sides.
33:34 I thought the Velcro stuck to the sides of the bag, but it does look like the Velcro
33:38 only sticks to where the Velcro strips are.
33:39 So basically, by reconfiguring, you can take these separators out, one or both, if you
33:44 want to take them out.
33:45 And that's about all you can do.
33:47 Here we've got silica gel.
33:48 Probably the reason why all of those documents were necessary was just to tell you not to
33:52 eat this.
33:53 And it says it right on the bag, so it's still ridiculous, all those papers.
33:57 But yeah, here's the bag.
33:58 There's that.
33:59 Actually, I guess I do want to see how well this new mouse fits into the bag.
34:05 All right, fits like a glove.
34:08 See that?
34:09 Now, it's a little bit at least more secure, and you can put your cell phone charger, headphone,
34:14 earbuds, I guess, on the other side.
34:19 Specs kind of bulging now only because I just tore it half apart.
34:23 But yeah, you can stick your mouse in there, and it's going to be safer than just sticking
34:28 it somewhere without a bag.
34:31 So there's that.
34:32 Nice that they include it.
34:33 I would recommend that they look into their logistics because it does not seem very...
34:37 It doesn't even seem economical for them to ship that to me separately.
34:41 But I don't know what kind of a FedEx deal they have.
34:43 All right, so at this point, I'm going to get right into it.
34:46 Let's pan the camera up just a little bit so you can see the bottom of my screen.
34:50 And I'm going to plug this Bolt receiver in.
34:52 I wonder if I'll be able to pair my touchpad.
34:56 I probably won't be able to pair the Unifying touchpad with the Bolt receiver.
34:59 They don't even sell these touchpads anymore.
35:01 So I'm probably going to have to keep both receivers around.
35:03 Good thing my keyboard has two USB ports.
35:06 But I'm going to stick this where my old Unifying receiver was, and then let's just flip the
35:11 new mouse on.
35:13 Like I said, there's a button here.
35:14 It says "1, 2, 3."
35:16 The "1" is lit up.
35:18 The original Logitech MX Master had that as well.
35:21 It's actually really handy because you can pair this with three different receivers and/or
35:25 Bluetooth cards and different computers.
35:27 And then without having to repair, you can just easily switch between them.
35:31 Okay, and the mouse is working.
35:33 You can see the mouse moving around there.
35:35 One thing that I do think is interesting...
35:36 Oh, wow.
35:37 Okay, that's really interesting.
35:39 So the new mouse, the new MX Master 3S, it's got this little button-looking thing on the
35:47 bottom of the mouse here.
35:49 If I tap to focus again...
35:51 There we go.
35:52 You might...
35:53 There it is.
35:54 You can see it in the camera shot there.
35:55 So that little ridge, it still has a thumb button, but they did make it smaller.
36:00 However, it's not actually that small.
36:02 See, I thought since the old one there was no ridge or anything, the old one you just
36:06 pushed down on the entire area.
36:08 The new one, I thought maybe that this was a really tiny button, but I was a bit confused
36:12 because that seems really small for a button, even if it was just...
36:16 I mean, I wouldn't have trouble hitting it with my thumb, but it just seemed really small.
36:20 However, I can feel you don't have to hit right on that ridge.
36:25 That's just an indicator that there is something to press.
36:28 That's not actually a button.
36:29 That's just a bump in the rubber.
36:31 So that's a little disappointing because it means the new mouse could eventually fail
36:34 in the same way as the old one did.
36:37 Like I said, part of the failure with the old one was that that rubber there did crack.
36:41 You know, it started cracking, coming apart where it presses down.
36:45 However, like I said, it was like eight years before that even became an issue at all.
36:50 So yeah, I'm not super worried about that.
36:52 Otherwise, yeah, I'm going to just real quick do this, I guess, deciding if I want to put
36:58 the old mouse on the mouse pad or the new mouse on the desk to compare how they feel.
37:03 Yeah, I mean, they feel pretty comparable.
37:06 The new mouse, it's very comparable in weight.
37:08 The old mouse, I remember not being as heavy as I thought it would be based on its size.
37:12 The new one, it feels like it might be ever so slightly heavier, but it's also a tiny
37:17 bit smaller.
37:18 So yeah, it might just be a comparison thing.
37:21 They might actually be the same weight.
37:22 Those stats should be on their website for actually confirming.
37:25 Yeah, you can see the design really well in that lighted camera shot.
37:29 Again, I apologize the old mouse is so gross and just torn up.
37:35 But yeah, this is what I've been using.
37:36 So if only because it's cleaner, it's nice I've made this upgrade.
37:40 As you can see, like I said, we got the silver strip at the bottom now.
37:43 I didn't mind the warmer gold strip on the old one, but that is the MX Master 3S.
37:49 Let's see.
37:50 So the new mouse, it's got a common thing with Logitech mice.
37:55 Oh, okay.
37:56 I do want you to hear this.
37:58 This is what clicking sounded like with the old mouse.
38:01 This is the old MX Master.
38:06 And then this is clicking with the new mouse.
38:08 This is the MX Master 3S.
38:13 I'm not sure if you can hear the new one at all.
38:15 It is much quieter clicking.
38:17 So that's surprising actually.
38:19 Yeah, the one last thing I wanted to do was check if I can turn off the auto unratcheting.
38:25 Like I said, the old mouse, I configured it so that the...
38:29 This wasn't how it came configured.
38:30 I'm pretty sure it came configured to auto switch from ratcheted to free scrolling when
38:35 you scrolled fast enough.
38:37 And then also clicking down on the mouse button itself switched it from one to the other.
38:42 I switched those around so that this little button below the mouse wheel switched it between
38:47 free scrolling and ratcheted.
38:48 And I also turned the auto free scrolling off.
38:51 So the new one has free scrolling automatically.
38:55 I can feel that.
38:56 Yeah, even just the scroll wheel.
38:57 This is the old one.
39:01 This is the new one.
39:03 Yeah, yeah, the new mouse is much quieter.
39:08 That is an actual difference between the mice.
39:11 But I do want to open up...
39:12 I think I've got Solar installed.
39:13 Yes, I do.
39:14 Okay, and I've got Bolt receiver here listed on Solar.
39:18 So we're going to see if this is just as easy as...
39:21 Let's do the old school zoom into the screen.
39:24 This is an old school type of video.
39:25 We're almost done here.
39:27 Battery level came about 60% out of the box.
39:29 That's optimal for shipping and long term storage.
39:32 So that's fine.
39:33 Wireless link, you can see it says encrypted with the new Bolt receiver.
39:36 I actually, I kind of want to plug back in the UniFi.
39:39 Let me do that.
39:41 So you guys can see the difference here in what Solar says.
39:43 The UniFi receiver, you can see it's got both my T650 touchpad.
39:46 If I turn that back on here, and then it's also got the MX Master, both connected to
39:51 that one Unifying receiver.
39:52 And you can see the T650 wireless link says not encrypted.
39:56 I guess the touchpad didn't support encryption.
39:58 The MX Master, it does say it was encrypted.
40:00 But here on the Bolt receiver, we've got the new Master 3S.
40:05 And let's see, all these are grayed out.
40:08 Can we...
40:09 Scroll wheel ratcheted.
40:11 Yeah, see the MX Master, oh, all this stuff's grayed out everywhere.
40:16 If I hit the lock button, ignore this setting, change is allowed.
40:22 Okay.
40:23 So we've got free spinning.
40:24 I can feel that it's just made it free spinning.
40:27 I've got ratcheted.
40:29 I can feel that it's ratcheted, but I can still feel that it's free scrolling when I
40:32 scroll really fast like this.
40:34 Like it's ratchet, ratchet, and then it's free scrolling until it stops.
40:38 Now it's ratcheted.
40:39 See, I don't want it switching by itself like that.
40:42 So let's set that to ignore again.
40:45 Ratchet speed, maybe it's this.
40:47 If I switch ratchet speed to one, now it unratchets too easily.
40:52 If I switch it to 50, okay.
40:55 So if I just turn the ratchet speed all the way up, that setting controls how fast you
40:59 have to spin this for it to auto switch.
41:02 It's not named very intuitively, but that is what that setting does.
41:06 So now at this point, if my camera ever wants to focus, there we go.
41:09 Yeah, I can take this and I can spin it really fast and I can feel and hear a little bit
41:17 that the ratchet is still in effect when I turn that up to 50.
41:20 So that's basically it.
41:21 That's all the configuration I really needed or wanted to do.
41:25 The MX Master, that was also set to 50.
41:27 So yeah, same setting as the old one.
41:29 The old one, it's not showing as modified, probably because I did that in the Windows
41:34 software for that original MX Master.
41:38 But yeah, you can change your DPI and everything if you want to change the speed that it moves
41:41 around and stuff.
41:42 For now, what was my MX Master set to DPI wise?
41:46 1000?
41:47 Yeah, same.
41:48 Same as the new one.
41:49 Oh, you can even change the connection between those three from Solar, which would immediately
41:54 disconnect it from this computer control wise.
41:57 That's interesting though, because you're controlling...
41:59 I'm not sure entirely how that works.
42:01 If I switch this to three...
42:06 The mouse still says one, so maybe that one doesn't work.
42:09 All right.
42:10 Well, this mouse is working how I wanted it.
42:11 And that is just about everything I wanted to talk about in terms of a mouse.
42:14 Thanks for sticking with me for such a trivial video.
42:18 But yeah, that is my new Daily Driver mouse.
42:20 There's the old one for our final shot.
42:22 We'll maybe make this the thumbnail or something.
42:24 See if we can get a really, really optimal thumbnail video frame here.
42:29 Turn this one a little more...
42:31 Let me know what mouse you guys are using down in the comments.
42:33 But I'm Jacob Kalf and I'm the Nerd in the Street, and I'll see you guys in the next
42:36 video.
42:37 Bye.
