00:00So, I think we're like two months away from the first college football game, and I'm going
00:09to guess we're going to get more clarity on this story before we get there.
00:13What's the update?
00:14What's the latest, Mike, on this college player prop betting?
00:17Because that's really the next big sport here for college sports.
00:21You think that in New Jersey that folks are going to be able to bet on this as it gets
00:25banned pretty much everywhere across the country?
00:27Yeah, Craig.
00:29That's the question, right?
00:31The NCAA has continued to come out with press releases.
00:34I think it was Friday they put out a release that said one out of three high-profile players
00:38deals with harassment from a betting-related activity, you know, whether it's a losing
00:43better or somebody wanting to put pressure on them to hit whatever prop bet they're trying
00:46to bet.
00:47So, that's why the NCAA wants to get rid of this thing.
00:49And then I think we saw another interesting reporting from ESPN with help from Legal Sports
00:53Report that a lot of these major universities have not shown their student-athletes kind
00:57of what the penalties are criminally if you're caught doing any sort of illegal betting.
01:03That's something Matthew Holt now with IC360, the Integrity Monitor, formerly known as U.S.
01:08Integrity before they merged with another company.
01:12He had talked about this, that just, you know, hey, it's your college career, you're not
01:16a pro-athlete, you know, maybe you want to take a shot because you don't have the money.
01:19But at the same time, in some states, it's a felony to do this.
01:22And athletes should know that or at least be made aware of it, right?
01:25You hope when you do these education programs, they're enough.
01:27Obviously, they weren't in the past.
01:29I think athletes were confused, especially at the pro level.
01:31Hey, what can we bet on?
01:33Why can't we bet at the training facility?
01:34All these kinds of questions.
01:36Now you have college athletes who are 18 to 22 years old, not only getting harassed but
01:40then not understanding potentially at some of these schools.
01:43If I bet and I get involved in some sort of criminal investigation, you know, how long
01:48can I go to prison?
01:49And that's something you would want to tell athletes to prevent them from doing this.
01:53And again, that just goes back to the whole thing with Iowa and the, you know, players
01:56betting on their parents' accounts, you know.
01:58I think when you're recruiting a player, whether it's the coach, the university, whoever the
02:02official is going for the visit, the parents need to sit down too and say, if this kid
02:06has an account in your name or he's betting in an account with your name, that needs to
02:10stop immediately.
02:11You can't have this.
02:13Your son or daughter will lose eligibility immediately.
02:16They could be under investigation for who knows what, you know, if it is a federal crime
02:20in that state.
02:21So, yeah, I think a lot to be sorted out here.
02:25And again, with betting kind of in its initial phase, even though it's year six since the
02:29fall of PASPA, this is something, again, that's going to have to need to be monitored at the
02:34highest levels with integrity and then certainly education.
02:37You got to continue to make this better, make this something that the players understand.
02:41So if anything happens, hey, we told you this was wrong, not, you know, coming out of left
02:45field of where, wait, nobody told me that.
02:47I think that has to be something that's solved.
