00:00 Surprise everybody and welcome to a new episode of Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel
00:07 where we are going to have an unexpected conversation
00:10 and we don't know what will happen in this conversation
00:14 because we don't know who we'll be joining us today.
00:19 But, but, but I'll get some clues so we can guess who our surprise guest for today is.
00:28 First clue, he became a flight attendant before he became a showbiz star.
00:33 Oh, I know who this is because, wait,
00:36 I have a recent conversation with someone and we talked about him.
00:38 He was a former flight attendant.
00:40 He started as a model in a local talent agency in 2019.
00:44 He's into graphic design.
00:46 He's Spencer Diaz in the Philippine adaptation of the K-drama "Start Up"
00:51 with Bea Alonso and Alden Richards.
00:55 I know who our guest is.
00:56 I'll add a clue. Is he the first one to hear it?
01:00 Yes. Okay, the last clue.
01:01 He's a fashionista and he's the one who hears it in the morning.
01:04 Surprise guest!
01:05 I'm guessing, it's Kaloy Tinkongko.
01:07 Is that you?
01:09 Should I reveal it?
01:10 Yes, reveal it!
01:12 Hi!
01:15 Isn't he the flight attendant?
01:17 Yes, because we've been talking lately and you're telling me that you were a flight attendant.
01:22 Wait, maybe you didn't tell me.
01:24 Maybe I was just being sneaky.
01:26 It's either me or Miss Mav Gonzalez.
01:29 Mav was my...
01:32 or was once my passenger on one of my flights.
01:35 Wow, really? You remember that?
01:38 Wait, okay.
01:39 Actually, she was the one who told me.
01:40 There was one time that she was a duty shopper and they mentioned Ika.
01:46 "Kaloy blah blah blah"
01:47 "Flight attendant before..."
01:48 She said that someone gave her a ring in her memory.
01:50 So, she's familiar with him.
01:51 So, she took a photo of me.
01:53 Because I look like Ji Chang Wook when she saw me on the flight.
01:57 Wow, that's a small world.
02:00 I'm sure that's why she took a photo.
02:01 Because of course, she found you cute.
02:03 You're so cute, right?
02:04 Oh, thank you.
02:06 But then, we're still fresh.
02:08 We're not stressed yet.
02:11 And she saw that we have a resemblance to her idol, Ji Chang Wook.
02:15 Ji Chang Wook?
02:16 You look more like a kid when you look at Ji Chang Wook.
02:19 Thank you.
02:20 Thank you, thank you, Miss Mia.
02:21 Do you get that a lot that you look like a Korean oppa?
02:25 I think partly because I have Chinese blood from my family.
02:29 So, my father actually is half Chinese.
02:31 But I didn't really practice Chinese culture growing up.
02:35 And in this situation, I'm not very Chinese-looking compared to my siblings.
02:41 My two siblings, actually, their eyes are more chinky.
02:45 I have the most obvious eyes among the three of us.
02:47 Being the eldest, I look more like my mother's side.
02:50 I think it's because of the Chinese blood, Asian-looking,
02:52 and also with the rise of Korean and Thai trends,
02:56 especially during the pandemic, I was able to adapt.
02:59 I'm sure we weren't the first ones to say that you look like an oppa.
03:04 I mean, it's impossible that we were the first ones to say that
03:06 when it comes to the first hit and all, right?
03:10 Actually, I think that was my title.
03:12 Because that became my selling point, I think, for them.
03:16 It really was a selling point.
03:17 Hey, Chloe, tell us about it.
03:19 I don't think the two of us talked about this.
03:22 I want to learn more about your life before you became a showbiz star,
03:26 before you became a GMA, before you became a first hit.
03:29 So you were a flight attendant.
03:31 Did you have any other jobs before you became a GMA?
03:34 Before I became a flight attendant,
03:36 I worked for a hotel here in Manila as a sales executive.
03:41 So I was handling events.
03:43 I tried handling, for a time, social events,
03:46 so private, personal, like birthday, weddings.
03:49 It lasted for about a year and a half.
03:53 But the workload I had there was a bit overwhelming,
03:56 so I resigned.
03:58 I was unemployed for about five months before the flight attendant thing happened.
04:02 Oh, wait. So your work as a sales executive,
04:05 that was your first job out of school?
04:07 Yes, right after graduation.
04:08 I actually applied in different companies.
04:11 Then I was hired at a hotel.
04:13 The job offer was generous.
04:15 So I didn't refuse.
04:16 Though, in my case,
04:18 I was only 20 years old when I graduated.
04:21 They get hired according to the PADCOR guidelines.
04:23 They can only hire employees who are 21 and above years old.
04:29 So I waited for about five months before I got employed.
04:34 But the job offer was already there.
04:36 I just waited until I turned 21 before I could join the team.
04:40 What was your college course?
04:42 I took up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration,
04:45 major in marketing.
04:46 Ah, okay.
04:47 And it was my choice to take up marketing management.
04:51 You really have a disclaimer, "It was my choice."
04:54 Why? Who else would have?
04:55 Meaning not your parents?
04:57 Well, yeah. I mean, most of us,
04:59 well, in this batch of college graduates,
05:02 most of my batchmates would say,
05:05 "Why did you take marketing or whatsoever? Or like nursing?"
05:08 And mostly, they choose nursing because that's what their parents want.
05:12 And there's more opportunity.
05:13 Which is, I mean, it is true.
05:15 But for me, I had the liberty and the freedom
05:18 to choose whatever I want in college.
05:20 My parents didn't interfere.
05:22 I would take their advice for sure.
05:24 Whatever would be better for me.
05:25 So they would know.
05:26 But they gave me a chance and freedom
05:30 to choose what I really wanted.
05:32 That's great, right?
05:32 They didn't force you to help them.
05:35 Yes. So that's it.
05:36 So marketing, and then I practiced it as a salesperson.
05:39 And then, customer service is still being a flight attendant.
05:43 So being able to talk to people,
05:44 conversing, and trying to pacify them whenever they have feedback
05:48 or like, there are late passengers.
05:50 That's where I applied to be a marketing graduate.
05:53 Hold on, Kaloy.
05:54 How did you go from being a sales executive?
05:56 I mean, you said that the workload was overwhelming at a very young age.
06:00 But how did you make the jump from a corporate or office job
06:03 to being a flight attendant?
06:05 Did somebody suggest to you that,
06:07 "Why don't you try being a flight attendant?"
06:09 Did you watch something?
06:10 Or did you dream of being a flight attendant when you were young?
06:14 You would expect that I might have a dream, actually.
06:17 But the selling point of being a flight attendant is
06:19 you get to travel the world.
06:21 Which I was able to when I was still a flight attendant.
06:24 But I wasn't dreaming of being a flight attendant, honestly.
06:28 Even the sales, I wasn't thinking of becoming a salesperson.
06:30 I wasn't either.
06:31 But that's where I got my inspiration, I guess.
06:34 But it turned out pretty well for me.
06:37 I learned to love everything that comes to my life.
06:40 How did I transition from being a salesperson to a flight attendant?
06:44 So right after resigning,
06:46 for five months, I was unemployed.
06:49 I wasn't doing anything.
06:50 I was able to save up from my earnings.
06:52 Then I used it for travel.
06:54 I used it while I was resting.
06:58 And then my friend forwarded me an email
07:00 that he knew I was unemployed.
07:02 "Hey, Carlo. I really miss you."
07:05 "So Carlo, why don't you try opening slots here for flight attendants?"
07:10 So I opened a batch of flight attendants.
07:11 I trained again.
07:12 The email was still internal.
07:14 And they weren't announcing the hiring yet to the mass public.
07:18 So I got my first dibs on the walk-in.
07:22 And then, the first hiring was on Monday.
07:24 They hadn't announced it yet.
07:25 So I was able to apply for the connections inside.
07:29 So I was the first one.
07:31 That morning, in the queue,
07:33 and very early in the morning,
07:35 I was at the headquarter's office on Domestic Road.
07:38 But not until two hours after,
07:41 they were about to start the queue.
07:44 But I was part of the first batch.
07:47 And then, it was a one-day process,
07:49 a hiring process with Zia.
07:50 In the morning, they would do the physical screening, the usual.
07:53 We were going to enter per batch.
07:54 Five guys.
07:55 And right after that,
07:56 they would release you right away.
07:57 And then, after a couple of minutes or hours,
08:00 they would call you again.
08:01 "You're back for an impact interview."
08:03 - Which is... - Oh, wow!
08:05 Yes. It's like a group.
08:06 It's like you would be facing in front of each other
08:09 your co-applicants.
08:11 And you would ask questions.
08:13 Actually, no one would ask you questions.
08:14 There would be someone who would be supervising.
08:17 But it's actually you who's going to ask each other questions.
08:21 Wow! I didn't know the application process was that intense.
08:25 I thought it's normal.
08:26 It's like an application for a job where you're interviewed by HR.
08:30 - Yeah. - Oh, actually...
08:31 There are different stages of interviews.
08:34 First, physical screening.
08:35 And then, impact interview, which is a group.
08:37 And then, the last one is a five-minute final interview
08:40 with the HR head.
08:42 And that's it.
08:43 And then, you would just wait for their advice
08:44 if you passed or not.
08:46 So, how long did it take for you to know that you passed?
08:49 That same week, Friday,
08:50 I got the email that the job offer is being prepared.
08:54 So, let us know if you want to push through with the application.
08:57 Of course, as someone who is unemployed and running out of savings,
09:00 I was like, "I don't want to!"
09:01 I'll just get a new job.
09:03 And I was just so lucky.
09:05 I think everything turned out in my favor, Ms. Pia.
09:08 Because my batch members during the training...
09:10 Because you would be on board right after you signed the job offer.
09:13 You would have to take two months of unpaid training
09:17 before you can be put on the front line.
09:20 They can put you on the front line, like on the flight.
09:23 And then, you have to do your duty.
09:27 Because it's two months of training of emergency procedures,
09:30 our own duties to the passengers,
09:33 the aircraft familiarization, and everything else.
09:36 So, it's two months in advance.
09:38 During that two months, my batch members
09:41 had to wait a year or even over a year
09:44 before they got a slot for training.
09:46 Where, in my case, I had to wait for one week
09:49 before I was accepted.
09:52 And I was already on board with them during the training.
09:54 So, I was just so lucky
09:57 to be able to complete it.
09:58 Because I didn't have to wait for a long time
10:01 before I could get training.
10:03 Unlike them, who had to wait over a year.
10:05 - Yes. - And then, the job offer expired.
10:08 The terms were different. The pay grade was different.
10:10 So, they had to go through the entire process again.
10:14 The medical, everything else.
10:15 But that's great.
10:16 What was your first flight assignment?
10:18 Was it domestic first, or international right away?
10:20 In our organization, my previous organization,
10:24 in that airline, there were two entities.
10:27 So, there's purely domestic flights,
10:29 which they fly the ATR, the propeller flights.
10:32 Suanga, Batanes, Mastate, those with small airports.
10:37 And then, my batch,
10:38 it was both international and domestic.
10:41 So, I was released for Airbus flights
10:43 and long-haul flights.
10:45 But my first flight wasn't international right away.
10:48 I flew, I remember, that was Viracat and Duanets.
10:51 ERC, I can't remember the airport.
10:53 But it was memorable because
10:55 I got to try the Guayabano Shake.
10:57 Is that right?
10:58 - Ah, nice! - That's the local drink.
11:01 So, you get to travel to the places you're going to.
11:05 Not every time, but I have allotted,
11:08 or like allotted schedules or flights
11:11 that if I don't reach the minimum crew rest,
11:13 so, you're supposed to be on duty
11:16 for 14 hours maximum, that's what you're mandated.
11:19 If your duty is going to go over that,
11:21 you're not allowed to stay there
11:22 and you'll stay in the place wherever you're going.
11:24 So, what was your longest flight
11:27 that you were assigned?
11:29 Actually, we don't fly America and Europe.
11:33 So, the longest flight I was assigned was to Dubai.
11:36 - Ah! - Which was around 9 to 10 hours.
11:39 - That's a long flight. - Yes.
11:40 You can't go back right after.
11:43 You have to stay there for over 24 hours
11:45 and then turn around on the flight
11:47 that's inbound to Dubai by the crew.
11:50 Then, you'll get on the plane and go back.
11:52 - Oh! - That's what they do.
11:54 - So, it's like a "Hatid Sundo". - Yes, yes.
11:57 But, I was on the flight for two years
12:00 and then the pandemic happened.
12:02 And the rest is history.
12:03 So, it was only during the pandemic
12:05 that you applied as an on-cam talent, as an actor?
12:09 Actually, yes.
12:09 In 2019, I started modeling for a local agency.
12:13 I had a taste of being a TV commercial model
12:17 for one project.
12:18 I was scouted by the same agency that I'm with now.
12:21 They didn't exclusively scout me in 2019
12:23 because they knew I was a flight attendant.
12:25 They just scouted me on social media
12:26 and one of the events I attended.
12:28 They told me to join a VTR, like the usual.
12:31 You'll be in a VTR and you'll get to know yourself.
12:34 So, I did that in person.
12:35 Then, I got a commercial.
12:38 That's why I was able to project for them.
12:40 But, the industry didn't follow up
12:41 because I had a day job, which was being a flight attendant.
12:45 But, until the pandemic happened,
12:47 I was part of the batch that was retrenched.
12:49 And then, they were the ones who got a lot of agency.
12:52 And then, why don't we try you in acting or modeling?
12:56 That's how I earned my income
12:59 generating a job during the pandemic.
13:02 That's the story of how I got into this industry.
13:03 Wow! I didn't know that.
13:05 I thought that by the time you started,
13:07 you've been hosting for a long time
13:10 or acting.
13:11 But, I didn't know that it was just...
13:13 So, at first, it was your first TV job?
13:16 When I signed with a modeling agency,
13:18 they gave me a modeling job
13:20 in two digital series, which I acted.
13:22 So, that's how I started.
13:25 I was able to do a workshop with them
13:28 but it wasn't enough for me to be an actor
13:32 for mainstream TV like now.
13:33 Then, the auditions for Jimmy arrived.
13:36 They opened the doors for Jimmy Arte Center.
13:38 It was in the year 2021, December.
13:42 I remember that.
13:43 And then, I did audition online.
13:44 It was fairly online.
13:45 They auditioned me.
13:47 We tried.
13:48 And then, it took months before they got back to me
13:52 and told me, "You got in.
13:55 Let's proceed with your contract."
13:57 Blah, blah, blah.
13:57 Before it got hot,
13:59 it was already mid-2022
14:03 when they had to hire fun liners.
14:07 - We call ourselves fun liners. - Yes, the fun liners.
14:09 We were supposed to be there in the first year, 2022,
14:13 in the summer of 2022
14:15 because they needed hosts for the summer segments.
14:19 - Yes. - They'll be on TV.
14:20 They couldn't hire current hosts.
14:23 So, they needed to hire us.
14:24 You would know, you would know, Estia.
14:27 You're good friends with them.
14:30 They're past that stage.
14:33 We'll be the ones to do it.
14:37 We'll be the ones to get more enthusiasm
14:39 for the sun and the fun.
14:42 They hired us not knowing that
14:45 they'll be on TV.
14:48 It grew into us being part of the UH Marcada.
14:52 - I would've thought. - That's amazing!
14:55 We're here in 2024.
14:57 I'm turning two years with it.
15:00 Your career experiences are so colorful, Kaloy.
15:04 - I'd love to stay up. - You're only a few years old.
15:07 I'm one of the oldest.
15:08 But I'd love to think I'm still young. I'm 27 now.
15:11 You're still young, Kaloy.
15:13 I'm still young? Okay, I'll think that.
15:14 We're one of the first batch.
15:17 We're the same age, actually.
15:18 Syrah, Anzo, Jenzel, and the rest of the fun liners.
15:23 But some of us are 21, 20.
15:27 So we're different. We're still one of the mature ones.
15:31 We're still the ones who are still young.
15:34 Well, at least, when we're with them.
15:36 But when we're the same age,
15:37 we're still young.
15:40 I thought you'd say that when you're with someone,
15:42 you feel like you're a kid.
15:43 No, I wanna be safe with the words I'm gonna say here.
15:48 - Because they'll hear it one way or another. - Yes, it'll reach them.
15:52 But yeah, I'd love to think it was colorful.
15:55 People actually tell me that.
15:57 And then, the sweet for you guys here,
15:59 that my transition was smooth,
16:01 even if it wasn't good at first,
16:03 that I was removed from being a flight attendant.
16:05 'Cause I thought, I was looking at five years
16:07 that was in my timeline of my life plan.
16:09 For five years, I could've left IFDIRC
16:13 and go international, maybe,
16:15 to International Airlines.
16:16 Just to share here, this is the first time I'm publicly sharing it.
16:19 That I actually applied to International Airlines.
16:21 And I even have an existing application with them.
16:23 I don't know if it's still existing,
16:25 well, to me, it is.
16:26 But I had to put it on hold.
16:29 'Cause I was just starting to do it.
16:33 So I said, "When will I ever get the chance
16:36 to be on TV and then be part of the longest
16:40 running morning show on Philippine television?
16:43 And be a host and be part of UH Maricada?"
16:47 And that application, I can take it.
16:50 Or like, well, at least to me, I'm being confident now.
16:54 I can take it at any time that I want.
16:56 If all else fails, I can go there and try my luck again.
17:01 But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
17:04 We don't know how long I'll be there.
17:06 You know what I mean?
17:07 - Yeah, and you go where opportunity strikes, right? - Always.
17:10 - Always. - Yes.
17:11 But you know, my mom is one of the most avid viewers of
17:15 not just Unang Hirit, actually, but GMA in general.
17:18 But Unang Hirit is part of her morning routine.
17:21 Just recently, actually, maybe two months ago,
17:24 we were talking and I was asking her,
17:26 "So what are you watching lately?"
17:29 I forgot what we were talking about.
17:31 Maybe some other...
17:32 - Like one of the teleseries. - Ghosts.
17:34 Yeah.
17:35 She said, "But you know, in Unang Hirit, I love the new hosts."
17:39 And then she said, "They're so cute together."
17:41 She was talking about you and Shira together.
17:43 She said, "You're so cute together."
17:45 And I think that is the sentiment of a lot.
17:47 Your tandem is so engaging.
17:51 It's fun to watch every morning.
17:54 Shira was one of the blessings that happened in 2022 for me, at least.
17:58 Because she wasn't the one who became my partner in Unang Hirit SPA.
18:02 It was Jenzel at first,
18:04 and then another Sparkle artist, which was Roxy Smith.
18:07 Last but not least, it was Shira.
18:08 It was a surprise.
18:09 My first impression, actually, with Shira,
18:11 and I told her this,
18:12 that I'm actually getting jealous of her.
18:14 And I told her that,
18:16 because I know Shira.
18:17 Shira has been in the industry for a while now.
18:19 And she's known for being a good actress,
18:22 being a great partner to E.K. Guzman,
18:24 and the leading lady of Ruro Madrid in Lolong.
18:28 So to be partnered with her,
18:29 it's a bit intimidating at first.
18:31 And how she looks.
18:32 I mean, Shira is beautiful.
18:35 But I have the impression that,
18:38 since she's been an artist for a long time,
18:40 maybe she has a look for new artists like me,
18:43 who don't have a name yet.
18:44 And no one will recognize me if it's not for Unang Hirit.
18:48 So I said, and we did a tandem.
18:50 I was even messaging Roxy Brooks.
18:52 "My partner today is Shira."
18:54 I don't know how to talk to her, blah, blah, blah.
18:57 I told Shira about that.
18:58 And we were just laughing at that time
19:01 that we were still nervous
19:02 and how we were going to actually manage each other's first impression.
19:06 But she became organic, Ms. Pia.
19:09 She translated on the screen.
19:10 People can see it.
19:12 And we are so happy to hear feedback like that
19:14 from your mom, regards to Tita,
19:16 that they're happy with our tandem.
19:18 Because it's clicky.
19:20 Our banters together on live are just snaps.
19:24 And we don't need to overthink what we're going to say.
19:27 Because it comes out naturally.
19:30 We don't put much effort in being loud and annoying.
19:34 And part of us, I mean, is conscious
19:36 that we need to do this lively.
19:38 And extra annoying.
19:40 Because that's what will make the audience happy and entertained.
19:46 So, I'm just so happy.
19:47 That's probably also why it works.
19:49 Because she's really organic.
19:51 Right?
19:52 She doesn't have anything false about it.
19:55 But I'm curious, Kaloy, if you're really a morning person.
19:58 Because, I mean, to be honest,
20:00 first of all, it's really such a fun show.
20:02 But this is what we always say.
20:03 It's so hard to wake up and go to work.
20:05 But once you're there, you forget that you had a hard time waking up
20:09 and waking up in the morning.
20:10 But you, it's hard for you to wake up every morning.
20:13 I mean, not that early, right?
20:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:18 [BEEP]
20:19 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:25 At some point, life has to go on.
20:27 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:29 Once you lose your respect for a person,
20:33 you love never [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:35 If you measure 3.67 inches or less,
20:39 then that's a micropenis.
20:41 Do you really have to go through all these rules
20:43 before you focus on yourself?
20:45 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:49 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:52 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:58 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:02 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:06 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
21:12 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:13 It's really such a fun show.
21:14 But [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] it's so hard to wake up and go to work.
21:18 But once you're there, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:23 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:24 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:25 Every morning.
21:26 I mean, not that early, huh?
21:27 Well, coming from an industry, being a flight attendant,
21:31 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:35 Which is also-- it was a struggle for me back then.
21:38 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:40 I managed all your expectations.
21:42 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:43 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:46 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:49 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:52 Not knowing that [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:54 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:55 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:56 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:57 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:58 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:59 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:00 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:01 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:02 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:03 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:04 [LAUGHTER]
22:05 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:06 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:07 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:08 I really didn't have a chance to sleep. And personally, I can't sleep on the trip. It's a struggle for me to sleep while on the road.
22:15 No matter how tired I am, I can't sleep on the road. I arrived there tired, but right after that first guesting of Hirit,
22:23 it didn't become a burden for me to be eager to be invited again to Hirit. Because it was fun!
22:30 It was fun when I did it in the segment because I was just bungee jumping there. I rappelled, I freepowded, I was a little scared because it was my first time doing it.
22:39 Because it's live, there's time pressure, and then everyone's watching you. So I did it even if I was nervous.
22:46 But right after that, I told my handler that "Hey, tell them that we're available again tomorrow. We're like the contestants. Please, please tell them."
22:55 When I became a regular, I was just operating and I became a regular in the first Hirit. Of course, I was more excited to wake up every day.
23:04 Because I get to have a regular job again. Because there are a lot of Sparkle artists who are purely acting.
23:11 Do you just need to have an acting project, to work, if you have a project?
23:15 So that's what happened to me at first when I wasn't doing Hirit yet. When I was just a guesting on Jimmy's acting shows,
23:22 I was waiting for a project. On days that I wasn't doing anything, I was doing nothing at all. That was my life before Unang Hirit.
23:29 So I was just so happy. I felt really blessed when they offered me to be a regular host.
23:34 And up until now, I tell people or I share to my friends when they ask "How's life in Unang Hirit?"
23:40 With Unang Hirit, I always start with how I get up in the morning. I said, "You know what? I never got dragged to wake up in the morning."
23:47 I always look forward to something new every day. I know there's a routine. Like, "Wake up, take a shower, change my clothes, drive, go to work, go to the studio."
23:55 And then, do my face, my hair, and style myself. Because I do my styling. I mix and match every single morning when I wake up.
24:03 That's when I check what color is okay. "The color today is this." So I look for the base color first.
24:07 So today, for example, today is red. So this is the base color earlier. Then I'll put a layer there.
24:13 Then the bottom, jeans or whatsoever. That's how I mix and match every single morning.
24:18 But there are new things that happen every day. And it's up to you, actually, if you're gonna do something about it.
24:25 If you don't want to be a routine host, you do something about it. You look forward to the people you're gonna work with.
24:30 And it's just so easy to work with the people in Unang Hirit. From the staff, and then to the hosts, to the old hosts, to the new hosts.
24:39 We just jive all together. They're happy to be with us. I didn't think that news people would be that fun.
24:45 Honestly.
24:47 You're so mean to us, Caloy.
24:50 I thought you guys are more serious.
24:55 And you're always working. Because the news doesn't sleep.
24:59 There's always something new. You have to keep on working.
25:03 And of course, we give so much respect to you, news people, newscasters, journalists in general.
25:08 We know your workload and we know your stress.
25:12 Because it's not a joke. It's serious stuff.
25:17 I didn't see that you guys are serious.
25:21 It's not just fun that I get from them. I learn a lot from them.
25:25 But actually, you know what? I think the perfect description of Unang Hirit.
25:29 It sounds cliche, but it's like a family.
25:33 Once you have been a part of the UH family, you will always be a part of the UH family.
25:39 So let's say we're two. I've been with Unang Hirit for a few years.
25:43 And we didn't reach it. But since we both became part of Unang Hirit, I feel like we're like children.
25:50 Like we're connected. Yes, yes, yes. That's right.
25:52 We have the same interests when we're related to each other.
25:55 Because we're in the same circle. And then we get to see each other post-radio.
25:59 So we're still looking forward to the next one.
26:03 It's such a breather.
26:05 Actually, just this morning, Ms. Lynn was telling me,
26:10 "When are we going to go out again? When are we going to do it again?"
26:13 Because we did it last time in the place, right?
26:15 Yes, in her house.
26:17 She was mentioning earlier, "When are we going out again?"
26:19 I told her, "You know what? Yesterday, Attorney Gabby, when she was doing her segment yesterday,
26:25 she was telling me that when she clears out, when she comes back to her house here in Metro,
26:31 she will set up a gathering for us."
26:34 Oh my! There it is!
26:36 That's what I'm looking forward to.
26:38 Actually, I'm a social butterfly.
26:40 I live alone here. Actually, I'm living alone. I live independently.
26:44 But my family is just nearby.
26:46 Also, they're from Manila.
26:48 They're just an hour drive away.
26:50 But I chose to live alone during the pandemic because I'm always exposed to people during production.
26:55 I'm always out.
26:56 And knowing me, I really like going out and interacting with people.
27:00 If I don't have an appointment today with you, Ms. Pia, I would be out.
27:03 I'd probably be having coffee outside.
27:06 I'd be checking my email, editing my posts on social media.
27:11 If I don't have anything to do right now.
27:13 I'd always be with people, with my friends, outside, going around the mall even if I don't have people.
27:19 That's how I crave for social interaction.
27:23 Wow! Always busy.
27:24 I'm actually more busy with gatherings.
27:27 But I'm busy with work. That's next.
27:29 I prioritize my sanity.
27:32 And the way for me to keep myself sane is to really go out.
27:37 Social interactions are very important.
27:40 Must have been difficult during the pandemic for you then.
27:42 Oh yeah. I was deprived, honestly.
27:44 And the only way for me to converse with people was video call.
27:49 You talk to them through video call.
27:51 That's why when we were in the pandemic, Ms. Pia, I was always outside.
27:56 Going out for brunch, dinner, whatever.
27:59 Breakfast, whatever I could squeeze in to the schedules of the not-so-strict parents.
28:03 And then, "Please, please."
28:06 We don't have much physical touch.
28:10 We don't stick to each other.
28:11 We walk to park our cars with the windows open.
28:14 That's how we interact.
28:18 I consider it my rest, honestly.
28:21 Sleeping is the general way of resting.
28:25 But I'm always outside.
28:27 Right after going out, I would usually ask people in the studio if they want to go out.
28:32 "Can we have coffee first before we go home?"
28:34 "If you don't have anything else today, can we have coffee?"
28:37 Because there are many coffee shops nearby.
28:39 Who's the one who usually says yes?
28:41 Atty. Gabby.
28:42 We don't really post it all the time.
28:45 But we go out all the time.
28:47 Whenever she's there, if she doesn't have anything, she'll get me things.
28:51 Like, 9 or 10 AM.
28:53 So we have one hour to spend together.
28:55 We'll have coffee.
28:56 Oh, nice!
28:57 And then, Anjo.
28:59 Now, that he's the drawing boy of Unang Hirit.
29:01 So Anjo is known for being the drawing boy of Unang Hirit.
29:03 So if there are no proper food props for Unang Hirit set, we'll go out to have breakfast.
29:09 He's the one who's good at preparing food for the set.
29:12 Yes, he's the one who's good at it.
29:14 That's right.
29:15 Wait, Kaloy.
29:16 I want to go back to what you said earlier.
29:18 In the mornings when you get up, you prepare your clothes for the day.
29:22 You mean, you don't prepare it the night before, before you go to sleep?
29:26 There would be times because I sleep at 9.
29:29 I might be surprised.
29:30 I sleep at 9.
29:31 I make sure that...
29:32 9?
29:33 9 PM.
29:34 9 PM.
29:35 Okay.
29:36 So at least 6 hours of sleep.
29:37 Good for you!
29:38 I do.
29:39 Because I don't want my body to get used to not sleeping enough.
29:41 You would notice it to me.
29:43 If I don't sleep enough, I look like I don't sleep enough.
29:45 It will be translated on TV.
29:48 My eyebags are more visible.
29:50 My eyebags are getting thicker.
29:51 But I don't want people to see me not prepared for work.
29:54 I make sure that at the most, 9 PM.
29:57 I sleep at 9 PM at the latest.
29:59 There would be times that I prepare it prior.
30:02 But there are days that I just curate what I'm going to wear the night before.
30:07 I don't actually prepare it the night before.
30:10 It's easy to steam clothes.
30:12 But I don't want it to be in my closet.
30:14 I want to take a peek in my closet.
30:15 Ah, okay.
30:16 Red today.
30:17 So I'll go to the reds.
30:18 I'll put it here.
30:19 That's how easy it is to style.
30:21 Oh, nice!
30:22 I draw inspiration from social media.
30:24 I look at the current trends and what most people of my age would do.
30:31 I search on social media.
30:32 And then I go to Pinterest.
30:34 Most of the time, I'm on Pinterest.
30:35 That's a great tip.
30:36 You're known for being the fashionista oppa.
30:40 But you're the only one who styles yourself.
30:42 Yeah, well, it's a bit challenging.
30:44 Because there are times when I run out of ideas.
30:47 So, thank goodness.
30:48 I apply what I see as layers when it comes to work.
30:53 So, you save all of that on your board.
30:55 Yes.
30:56 That's great!
30:57 Because it's easy.
30:58 When you have a base, I read this on social media.
31:01 You actually start with the base.
31:03 The most basic one that you can actually wear for the day.
31:05 Then from there, that will be your pattern for the bottom, for the layer.
31:10 It will be easy.
31:11 Of course, you're known for being the fashionista oppa.
31:14 Doesn't that come with a little pressure?
31:16 Even when you go out, you need to be in a good posture, right?
31:20 You have to wear a nice outfit.
31:21 Actually, to begin, I'm also a vein.
31:24 No apologies for that, Niden.
31:28 Yes, of course.
31:29 I'm unapologetically a vein.
31:31 If not for that, I wouldn't be a flight attendant.
31:33 They wouldn't consider me as a flight attendant.
31:35 I wouldn't be considered as a model and a TV if I didn't take care of myself.
31:41 I was conscious before.
31:43 We were trained to take care of our grooming when I was a flight attendant.
31:46 That's how I learned how to prep my skin, how my hair should look like.
31:51 I brought that to being an artist and TV personality now.
31:55 The pressure, yes, there's pressure.
31:57 Because they're expecting you to look good every single time you go out.
32:00 But it also has a benefit because they perceive you as someone high of value.
32:05 You can't just be put in a box like this, in this image.
32:10 I don't really stick to one styling.
32:13 As much as possible, not very masculine.
32:16 My features are not really that masculine.
32:19 So I try to switch up my styling to a little androgynous.
32:23 They would actually wonder what style I'm wearing.
32:26 The answer is, the pressure.
32:28 When you say that you prepare your, you know, you have a routine.
32:32 Your skincare routine.
32:34 But you put something on your face.
32:37 Because I don't put on makeup.
32:38 I started putting on makeup when I was in school.
32:40 It was tiring because I didn't do anything.
32:42 So I got tired 3 months ago.
32:44 I haven't put on makeup for 3 months.
32:46 But then...
32:47 Wow! I hope everyone can avoid putting on makeup when they're in front of the camera.
32:52 This is completely without makeup.
32:55 I cover my eye bags.
32:56 And a little powder?
32:58 I'm allergic to powder.
32:59 I'm asthmatic so I don't use powder.
33:01 So what I do when I get to the studio, to the makeup room,
33:04 I just conceal my eye bags and lip balm.
33:06 That's it?
33:07 That's it.
33:08 You don't put on shine for a long time?
33:10 Actually, I let my skin shine.
33:13 I don't take it off.
33:14 Even when I'm not looking good, my face is already shiny.
33:18 But I like it that way.
33:20 Though, when I'm told by the people in the control booth,
33:24 the directors,
33:25 "Kaloy, just touch up your face. It's already shiny."
33:28 So, that's the time I remove it.
33:31 Just blotting?
33:32 I just do it.
33:34 Oh my gosh, Kaloy, you're so jealous.
33:37 You get that it's not good for the skin because it reflects the light.
33:41 But on regular days, I like it that it's natural.
33:44 I look more relaxed.
33:45 To you, it doesn't look oily.
33:47 It just looks dewy.
33:48 There's a difference between dewy and oily.
33:51 You're completely blessed, Kaloy.
33:54 I embrace being oily.
33:56 Embrace being oily.
33:58 You're not oily. You're just dewy.
34:00 Dewy, okay.
34:01 I'll claim it.
34:02 Dewy.
34:03 Sorry, I missed it.
34:04 Kaloy, you look like Margaret.
34:05 You're oily.
34:06 It's not oily, it's dewy.
34:07 It's dewy.
34:08 It's just dewy.
34:09 But Kaloy, are you currently working on any series?
34:13 Nothing as of the moment.
34:14 The producers, actually, two weeks ago,
34:16 I received a call from my handler asking me,
34:19 "Kaloy, are you open to auditioning for a series?"
34:23 Because the last one was...
34:25 Startup.
34:26 Startup was early 2022.
34:28 No, mid-2022.
34:29 Last year, for the right one,
34:32 it was "Yakau Madi" and "Ruru Madrid."
34:34 So I played the role of Ruru's best friend/assistant.
34:38 And it's turning one year already in April.
34:41 It's been a year since I last did a series.
34:43 Though I got to act for guesting,
34:47 for public affairs shows.
34:49 So two weeks ago, I received a call from my handler
34:52 asking me if I'm willing to audition.
34:54 I said, "Yes."
34:55 I said, "I've been waiting for a call
34:58 to audition again."
35:00 Because I've been telling them,
35:02 "Hey, I still want to do a series. I miss acting."
35:05 That's when he said,
35:07 "Okay, fine. There's a lineup for a new teleseries."
35:10 But according to the producer,
35:13 "Can I still do it?"
35:14 That's the question.
35:15 "Can I still do it?"
35:16 Because I have a first heat every day.
35:18 You can do it.
35:19 I can do it. Yes.
35:20 I actually like that kind of busy.
35:22 Like, there are times when I can answer.
35:24 To the point that sometimes I'm directed from taping
35:27 to the first heat.
35:28 I like that kind of busy.
35:31 This year, right?
35:32 Did you have to do acting workshops as well?
35:35 I saw you singing.
35:36 You posted something about singing.
35:38 Are you really a singer?
35:40 Well, it's just now that I created a platform,
35:43 GMA, for public affairs.
35:45 It's actually public affairs who gave me an avenue to sing.
35:48 Because I love singing.
35:50 Actually, I've been singing for a long time.
35:52 And Joe Direc-Mon went out on Saturday night
35:56 to do karaoke.
35:57 We had karaoke.
35:59 We did it in Along Tomas, Marato.
36:01 That's all we did.
36:02 We had dinner and then karaoke.
36:04 I love singing.
36:05 So, I created a platform to do it.
36:08 And for the first time ever,
36:10 I created a single.
36:11 And it was the OST of "The Right One."
36:14 I performed it for the first time live
36:17 in the first heat when we promoted "The Right One."
36:19 So, it was just a full circle moment.
36:22 Because before, whenever I'm applying for a job
36:25 when I wasn't in the entertainment industry yet,
36:28 I would joke to the HR people in front of me
36:31 that if I don't get this job,
36:33 I'd be a recording artist.
36:34 They would do this to me.
36:36 If I don't get this job,
36:37 I'd make sure I'd be a recording artist.
36:39 I would do this to them.
36:41 And look at you now.
36:43 We've already recorded a song.
36:46 I was surprised up until now
36:48 that I was able to do what I thought was too far-fetched.
36:52 And now, it's actually been done.
36:55 I'm so impressed.
36:56 I'm so impressed by your energy,
36:57 by the range of things that you have done
36:59 and accomplished at a very young age.
37:02 And you don't seem to be lacking in sunny disposition.
37:06 I don't think I've ever seen you frown
37:08 or even put your eyebrows,
37:10 draw your eyebrows together.
37:11 You're always smiling.
37:12 So, the first heat really suits you.
37:15 All that morning positive good vibes.
37:18 But I want to say also thank you, Kaloy,
37:21 because I know that sometimes
37:23 you have to take your naps in the afternoon.
37:25 I mean, we know what it's like.
37:26 Even if you sleep early,
37:27 you'll still be sleepy in the middle of the day.
37:29 But here we are, in the middle of the day,
37:31 doing an interview.
37:32 So, thank you.
37:33 Thanks for taking time out to be with us, Kaloy.
37:36 Of course, I'm also thankful for your time, Spia.
37:40 You were able to squeeze this in
37:41 even though I know you had something in between.
37:43 Before this, you had something.
37:45 We're going back in time, right?
37:47 Yes, that's true.
37:48 Please say hi to Kika, Mama, tonight.
37:52 Yes, I'll tell her.
37:54 But before we wrap things up, Kaloy,
37:58 we have a surprise game for you.
38:00 We're not done yet, right?
38:01 Yes, yes, ma'am.
38:02 Okay, let's read it.
38:03 The game is called--
38:05 Oh, it's so cute because you're our fashionista, Opa.
38:08 Morning Opa.
38:09 The game is called "Opa Pipiliin Ka."
38:12 Okay.
38:13 In other words, if you're going to be chosen,
38:15 what will you choose?
38:17 All right.
38:18 First, will you choose to eat exotic food or skydiving?
38:23 Skydiving.
38:24 That's a quick answer.
38:25 See, that just goes to show how adventurous you are.
38:27 You've done bungee jumping before, right?
38:29 Yes, but I wanted to do skydiving when I was a flight attendant in Dubai.
38:33 But it won't happen for long.
38:35 We'll just save money and I'll still do it.
38:38 Post it so I can see it.
38:40 I'll just live through your post.
38:42 Don't you want to try?
38:44 No, thank you.
38:45 I'll just live through your post.
38:47 Okay, I will make sure to tag you.
38:50 Opa Pipiliin Ka, what will you choose?
38:54 Get a tattoo or get bald for a dare?
38:57 Not even for a TV role, just a dare.
38:59 I'll get a tattoo because I'm planning to have my first tattoo.
39:03 You already know what you'll get a tattoo of?
39:06 Yes.
39:07 Actually, it's been two years in the making.
39:09 I don't know why I still haven't gotten one.
39:11 But I got one.
39:13 Anjo has a lot of tattoos.
39:16 I got his contact in Cavite.
39:18 If I ever get bored, I'll go to Cavite to that person and get a tattoo.
39:24 It's a Latin word.
39:25 The word is Amor Fati.
39:27 Which means?
39:28 Accepting your fate, your destiny.
39:30 So it's easier to understand.
39:34 It is what it is.
39:35 I don't remember the exact definition.
39:37 Amor Fati means it is the act of accepting what has been done,
39:42 what is currently happening in your life, and what will happen in the future.
39:47 The only thing that you have control of is your reaction to what is going to happen to you.
39:52 Where will you put it?
39:53 Hopefully, not too visible because my parents would be mad for sure.
39:58 Actually, they're the ones who will get mad.
40:00 They don't want to see my face.
40:02 But I wanted to do it somewhere here.
40:05 Okay.
40:06 So at least when you wear long sleeves, you won't be seen.
40:11 At least one.
40:13 But my acquaintances told me when I got a tattoo,
40:16 "Oh, if you start that, you'll be able to wear it."
40:20 I said, "Hopefully, I won't get to that point."
40:22 But I just want that one Latin word, Amor Fati.
40:25 Tattoo.
40:26 Nice.
40:27 Okay, so now we know the answer to your question.
40:29 Okay, now, if you were to choose, what would you choose?
40:34 Cat person or dog person?
40:36 I'm a dog person.
40:37 I like the dog energy.
40:39 Actually, people get it from me as well.
40:41 There are terms like golden retriever energy.
40:46 If we're talking now, giving off that golden retriever energy,
40:50 which is very calm, very clingy,
40:52 I would tell you that you're giving off golden retriever energy.
40:56 Those are the terms.
40:57 Is it just golden retriever or is there something else?
41:00 Most of the time, I hear golden retriever because it's very clingy.
41:05 Maybe I'll talk to someone and they'll tell me, "You're giving me bulldog energy."
41:10 How would you actually explain that?
41:12 There, he's still going.
41:13 Hurry!
41:14 But I'm a dog person.
41:17 Though, here in my condo, the management doesn't allow dogs.
41:22 So I couldn't get my own dog yet because this is family owned.
41:26 If ever I move to my place now, which I'm planning to, to my new place,
41:30 I plan to get somewhere near the vicinity of GMA.
41:34 If I'm going to spend the next 10 years of my life here,
41:38 then I might as well get a place near work.
41:42 I'll just walk there. I don't need to commute.
41:44 Or all the way from the heart of Metro Manila, where I am now,
41:50 I'll go there and wherever the golden retriever is available.
41:53 Because I wanted a golden retriever actually.
41:55 Ah, okay. Nice.
41:57 But Andrew has a golden retriever, right?
42:00 Yes, but...
42:01 Is it painful?
42:02 It's painful.
42:04 It's better for him and the dog.
42:06 You know how I know? Because of Egan.
42:08 That's what we were talking about.
42:10 How about you, Miss Pia? I just wanted to know.
42:14 Are you a dog or a pet person?
42:16 If I had to choose, I would choose a dog.
42:18 But I don't have any pets.
42:20 But I would choose a dog.
42:22 You're not scared of dogs?
42:24 No, not at all.
42:25 When I was young, I was scared of dogs.
42:27 But now, I'm not anymore.
42:28 My sister has a Frenchie.
42:31 It's so cute.
42:32 So I'm just like a late bloomer when it comes to interacting with pets.
42:40 Okay.
42:41 Next, Puyat.
42:44 What do you like more, Puyat or Gutom?
42:47 Puyat.
42:48 Yes, Puyat is better than Gutom.
42:52 It's okay for me to function as Puyat.
42:54 But at least, I have a chance.
42:56 Okay. Second to the last.
42:58 Gimmick outside or resting at home?
43:00 I think I know the answer to that.
43:02 Can you answer for me, please, Miss Pia?
43:04 Gimmick outside.
43:05 Just for the record, I don't do gimmicks.
43:09 The term gimmick has an association with…
43:14 Dancing.
43:15 Tukstuk.
43:16 Tukstuk.
43:17 I've been there.
43:18 And I still miss those sometimes.
43:21 But if I were to pick now, I'd rather go for chill.
43:26 Chill no man.
43:27 Ah, nice.
43:28 For conversations.
43:29 You'll hear it when you're with someone.
43:32 I'm used to gimmicks.
43:34 It's such a waste of a night because you'll get hit by the effect of the alcohol.
43:39 And you'll just go home without remembering what happened the night before.
43:44 You'll miss the night.
43:45 I hope you can talk to your friends.
43:48 So I would rather go for chill no man.
43:51 Sign of maturity.
43:53 Oh, wow.
43:54 This is the last one.
43:56 If you were to choose, what would you choose?
43:58 Gift, acts of service, or words of affirmation?
44:02 In other words, what is your love language?
44:05 Is this the love that I want to receive or the love that I get?
44:09 Both.
44:10 If they're different, tell us which is which.
44:12 The love language that I want to receive from other people is…
44:17 I don't know, words of affirmation, gift, giving.
44:20 Yeah, gift or acts of service.
44:22 I like acts of service.
44:24 I'm a bit torn.
44:26 It's hard.
44:27 I'm trying to remember how I was persuaded by the other person.
44:30 I'm trying to recall how other people got my love.
44:33 I appreciate the smallest things.
44:35 For example, if I told someone something,
44:37 and then this person, after a couple of days or days,
44:41 he/she thought about what I said,
44:43 then this person would bring up something related to what I told to him/her.
44:47 For example, if I told someone, "Hey, I'm traveling to Japan alone.
44:52 You should try traveling alone."
44:54 After a couple of days, he/she would bring up again,
44:56 "Kaloy, I thought of what you said to me."
44:59 Oh, okay.
45:00 "Traveling, traveling."
45:02 And now I'm considering that.
45:03 I'm actually checking flights.
45:04 So, for that person to actually think about you
45:08 and the thought of him/her thinking about what you said to him/her
45:12 during the time that you're not together,
45:14 what persuades me?
45:15 That's what I'm doing.
45:17 That's what I want.
45:19 Showing their love and affection.
45:21 Nice.
45:22 It's hard to categorize,
45:24 but maybe that's more of a combination of all.
45:29 You don't need to have all three.
45:31 I decided.
45:32 You don't need to have all three.
45:33 I just put it that way.
45:35 A little of each.
45:36 I want to give as a service.
45:38 Ah, okay.
45:39 I tell people that I'm not a people pleaser.
45:42 I don't like pleasing people.
45:44 That's why I didn't stay long in sales.
45:46 Because when you're in sales, you need to persuade them.
45:49 When I'm already present and they don't want the deal,
45:51 I won't force them.
45:52 That's why I didn't stay long.
45:54 That's where my thought came from.
45:58 No, I'm not a people pleaser.
46:00 Here I am, doing the best that I can to please people
46:03 whenever there's a chance.
46:05 If the situation is not in favor of one person in your group,
46:09 I would do something about it.
46:11 I would say, "This is what we can do."
46:13 I would amend something in the situation
46:16 so that it would be in favor of you.
46:18 Something like that.
46:19 Like a mediator.
46:20 Something like that.
46:21 I'm a people pleaser.
46:23 It's okay.
46:24 As long as it's manageable.
46:26 As long as it's well-managed.
46:28 Kaloy, thank you again.
46:30 It was fun talking to you this afternoon.
46:33 That time just flew by like that.
46:35 Thank you so much for joining us today.
46:37 Would you like to invite our listeners and viewers
46:40 to find you on social media?
46:42 And of course, to catch you every morning on Una Hirit.
46:44 Please, please follow me on my social media accounts.
46:46 It's @kaloytingkongpo.
46:48 That's a K for Kaloy.
46:50 @kaloytingkongpo on all platforms.
46:52 I have Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
46:56 Also on YouTube.
46:57 I'm exploring vlogging now.
46:59 I recently bought a camera which was bought by Miss Lyn.
47:02 While she was watching for the concert.
47:06 Hopefully, our vlogging skills will develop.
47:11 You can always watch me every single morning on this Friday
47:15 on Una Hirit with Una Hirit Barcada on GMA7.
47:20 5.30 to 8 a.m.
47:22 Miss Pia, thank you so much for your time, your effort,
47:26 and of course, your team as well for having me here on your show.
47:30 It's been great. I enjoyed it.
47:33 Actually, I have a lot of things to say.
47:35 We have limited time. You have to admit.
47:38 I also do.
47:39 But hopefully, we can do a follow-up in the future.
47:42 Yes. Let's continue that party.
47:46 We will make sure.
47:47 I will tell them to speed things up
47:50 so that we can have a hangout again once in a while.
47:53 We need it.
47:54 Yes, so that we can see each other again in person.
47:57 Okay.
47:58 Thank you so much.
48:00 Thank you.
48:01 Thank you so much, Miss Pia.
