Transcript
00:00 Welcome to our Round 7 edition of Friday Footy Frenzy for the Ballarat and Central Holland
00:05 Football League.
00:06 I'm David Brio and I'm joined once again by Greg Glynnon.
00:09 Hello, David.
00:10 How are you today?
00:11 Sorry I can't be with you in the office today.
00:14 No worries at all.
00:15 That is no problem and we've got plenty of football to talk about for Saturday.
00:24 Give us just a taste, first of all, of what the Ballarat Football Netball League has to
00:29 offer.
00:30 A couple of big games again.
00:31 Not quite the size of the round that we saw last week where every game was pretty much
00:35 a blockbuster but a big match between second versus third.
00:39 We were seeing that Dali up against Melton, both last round losers, which was a bit of
00:45 a shock that both would drop last week's game.
00:48 So someone's going to get back on the winner's list this week.
00:51 Yeah, if you'd predicted that or even suggested that, I should say, a few weeks ago that these
00:55 two sides would both come off losses in the same round, you would have been probably laughed
01:02 at.
01:03 I think so.
01:04 But both of them had about three goal leads into the last quarter last week and both gave
01:10 them up.
01:11 So they'll be pretty keen to rectify that this week.
01:14 All right, let's run through the Central Highlands, first of all, Greg.
01:17 And we've got a round just absolutely packed with some great matches.
01:23 A lot of games that we speak about every week that could go either way.
01:28 But I think it's a genuine case for that this week and some games that have the potential
01:34 to really impact the chase for a spot in the top eight.
01:38 But we'll go from the top first of all.
01:40 We've got Kreisbuk at home to Carnham-Lyngton.
01:43 The Wickers coming off a win against Springbank, a win a long time in the making as far as
01:51 those two teams are concerned.
01:55 Carnham-Lyngton coming off a bye.
01:57 I think they win quite comfortably here.
02:00 They're looking at a top four finish this year and they should get the points.
02:05 So for me it's Carnham-Lyngton comfortably against a Kreisbuk which is really having
02:11 a real crack so far this year.
02:13 Next game is potentially, well at the start of the year it would have been, one of the
02:17 big match-ups of the season, Bungeree and Springbank, two great rivals.
02:22 But unfortunately the way things are going this year it's a very different picture because
02:26 Springbank, as everyone will know, is just having a terrible start to the season.
02:32 They haven't got a win on the board yet and at the other end of the scale, Bungeree, they're
02:36 flying undefeated and coming off a win against a reigning Premier.
02:40 They're the Premiership favourite at the moment.
02:43 They'll argue they perhaps don't earn that clear distinction yet but I'll tell you what,
02:48 from the outside, the Daemons, they're doing everything right.
02:50 They're showing they've got the depth because they've got a few injury problems like everyone
02:54 has and you've just got to deal with that and they're managing to deal with those setbacks.
03:02 And look, this game, as much as we want it to be a tight battle, I just can't see Springbank
03:07 getting near Bungeree.
03:08 So for me, it's the Daemons clearly to keep their unbeaten run going.
03:13 Next one's another great match-up.
03:14 Dalstead at home to Gordon, probably the biggest game that Dalstead's Victoria Park has seen
03:20 in a number of years.
03:21 Dalstead unbeaten, sitting second on the ladder.
03:24 How good are they?
03:25 We're really not sure yet.
03:26 They've had the win over Hepburn but Hepburn hasn't really fired up either.
03:31 So I think this is probably the biggest test so far against Gordon, the reigning Premier,
03:36 and the Eagles, well, they're fired up after tasting defeat at the hands of Bungeree.
03:41 They don't like losing any time but to lose to a rival, I know it's just left that sort
03:47 of feeling in their stomach that they want to bounce straight back.
03:50 And so this is a real test for Dalswood.
03:53 I think Gordon get home, both sides again, not at full strength but you've got to deal
03:57 with that and move on.
03:59 But this will give us a really good gauge as to where Dalswood is.
04:03 The Bulldogs look like they're having a wonderful time, aren't they?
04:07 They will play finals.
04:08 They only need probably, what, three more wins, I'd say.
04:12 Nine wins should make the finals this year.
04:15 So they'll play finals but we'll find out just how good they are as to whether they're
04:19 a top 14 or are they going to be a team that finishes in that fifth, sixth spot maybe on
04:26 the ladder.
04:27 So Gordon for me against Dalswood, Bunyong and Dunstown, important game for Dunstown.
04:31 They've only had a couple of wins and they need to get their season going.
04:34 Bunyong, well, they're going along really nicely and I think they win at home.
04:38 They've got their way through the worst of their injuries and I think they can kick on
04:43 and just make life a little bit harder for the Towners.
04:47 Warbra at home to Roquewood.
04:48 Well, at the start of the year, if you suggested at this time, Warbra would have been higher
04:54 on the ladder than Roquewood currently at.
04:56 Well, not many would have agreed with that either but that's the way it is.
05:00 They've had a number of two wins.
05:01 Roquewood, Corandap, they're having an absolute shocker so far and they're really struggling.
05:06 Injuries aren't getting any better but you've got to just get on with it.
05:09 Warbra, well, they'll have a deal of confidence about this game, I think.
05:12 They'll feel they're right in it and they could cause an upset here but I think Roquewood,
05:16 Corandap, if they don't win this, their season is completely gone.
05:21 So they need to get a win just to provide some chance of a revitalisation later in the
05:29 year.
05:30 Skipton at home to Leamonth.
05:32 This is a game I'll be covering live on our website on Saturday.
05:39 Of course, that is brought to you by Sheds and Shades by Design and they're a great supporter
05:48 this year to our Central Highlands coverage.
05:51 Skipton, they're going along nicely.
05:53 This is the year they can finish in the top four and if they're going to do that, they
05:57 need to win this.
05:58 Leamonth haven't started off too badly, really.
06:02 They've beaten Cardamom Linton.
06:05 They've got three wins.
06:06 If they can get to four by the halfway point, they're still well on the hunt for a top eight
06:09 spot but they're right on the edge at the moment.
06:11 For me, though, it's the Emus.
06:13 Potentially the game of the round and we've already mentioned some great match-ups is
06:16 Newelon and Hepburn.
06:18 Newelon undefeated.
06:19 They're the sleeping giant for my liking.
06:21 How good are they?
06:22 We don't know yet.
06:23 They've really only been tested once so far and that was against Skipton.
06:29 They got through that.
06:30 They're up against Hepburn, which is still - they haven't really got going this year.
06:34 They've had a couple of wins but they need to do more.
06:38 They've lost a couple of important players in the past few weeks, whereas Newelon's at
06:44 full strength.
06:45 I think the Cats get home here but it is an important game for Hepburn just to at least
06:50 show something more than they have.
06:52 Then our last game is Belan and Clunes at home.
06:56 Belan, they're doing quite well without winning but they play their best football there.
07:00 But I think Clunes on this occasion can get another win.
07:03 So, look, a great line-up of matches.
07:06 Some games that could go either way.
07:08 Particularly the likes of Dunstown, Learmonth, those sides that are just on the fringe of
07:15 the top eight, Hepburn as well.
07:17 They're the teams that really need to get their seasons going but they have some tough
07:21 assignments.
07:22 Okay, that's a wrap of the Central Highlands League.
07:25 Greg, Ballarat Football Netball League, we've already mentioned one game and I guess that's
07:31 where you're starting off.
07:32 Yeah, Daly Melton is clearly the match that's around this week.
07:37 As we said earlier, both teams dropped the games last week.
07:41 Both teams were about three goals up in the last quarter and couldn't quite get the job
07:45 done.
07:46 So, they'll be pretty keen to get going again.
07:49 This is almost a game for potentially second spot on the ladder.
07:52 If Sunbury goes away with the top spot as they've beaten, obviously, North Ballarat
07:58 and Daly in the last two weeks, suddenly this game could actually be the game that decides
08:03 the second chance.
08:05 And interestingly enough, they actually play each other in the last round as well.
08:08 So, it could be the start of a really good rivalry between these two teams.
08:14 I've gone for Daly basically on the home ground.
08:17 That's the only way I can separate these two at the moment.
08:20 But Melton are capable.
08:21 Daly have got a few missing but so have Melton.
08:24 You would expect that Melton will be right in this game.
08:27 But give Daly the tip just on the home ground advantage and that's pretty much the only
08:32 difference I can see in this one.
08:34 Of the losses, I think Melton would have been the one that was really shot.
08:38 Exactly.
08:39 Exactly.
08:40 Yeah, that's right.
08:41 Leading the way they did last week and then only to let East Point run over the top of
08:45 them.
08:46 That would have been a real sting for them last week.
08:48 So, we'll see how they respond this week.
08:51 North Ballarat and Redan, well, these are two clubs that are pretty much beset by injuries.
08:55 But I think Redan are probably beset a little bit more than North Ballarat.
09:00 They've lost Rory Gunser this week who probably would have been leading their best and fairest
09:04 at this point of the season.
09:07 He's gone with syndesmosis.
09:08 He'll probably miss the rest of the season.
09:11 Sam Broadbent is another one who's gone down.
09:14 He's done a calf.
09:15 Interestingly, he's pretty much the first soft tissue injury they've actually had.
09:18 All their other injuries have been contact injuries.
09:21 So they've had a pretty rough time there.
09:24 Taj Bond is back with the Pioneers this week as well.
09:26 So it looks a little bit of a task for a very, very young Redan side.
09:32 Up to 11 under-age players could be playing senior football for Redan this weekend.
09:37 So it's going to be a very, very hard match.
09:39 But it might give them an opportunity to try something different at Mars Stadium, get a
09:43 chance to get on the big ground, get up against North Ballarat.
09:46 But Redan have actually got the bye the next two weeks.
09:49 I think if ever a team's crying out for the bye, it's the Lions there.
09:53 So I think North Ballarat will win that one pretty well.
09:55 But that age demographic, Greg, that's a bit of a like a revisit of what Ballarat swans
10:01 went through last year with the 70 youngsters.
10:03 So yeah, sometimes it's hard to deal with at the time.
10:06 But you can keep these players on board.
10:09 This experience can be invaluable, can't it?
10:11 That's right.
10:12 And Redan keep on winning.
10:13 I mean, they got the points last week.
10:14 They're in the mix.
10:15 If they get a few players back after the bye, I think they're right in there for a potential
10:20 final spot.
10:21 So we'll just watch this space.
10:23 But I think, as I say, this week will probably be a bit too much of a bridge too far.
10:27 It's Sebastopol's chance.
10:29 They've got Melton South this week.
10:31 Sebas, can they finally get their second win on the board?
10:36 Melton South would have definitely penciled this one in, though, as a chance.
10:39 They're at home, the Panthers.
10:40 So I'd imagine they're definitely be putting their best foot forward here.
10:45 A couple of very handy inclusions, though, for Sebas.
10:47 Luke Keel is back after missing last week.
10:50 Riley O'Keefe is also back.
10:51 So they've actually got the bookends at each end of the ground, which will make a huge
10:56 difference to Sebas.
10:57 And surely this is the time that Sebas will get their second win of the season and finally
11:02 get the season going.
11:04 The other one, the other game that sort of stands out this weekend is the game between
11:08 East Point and Ballarat.
11:10 East Point have to start favourites in this after just based on their form last week.
11:14 But Ballarat is coming off the bye and they are very well rested, whereas East Point had
11:19 one heck of a battle last week at Melton.
11:21 So maybe there's something there for Ballarat to work with.
11:25 The one disappointment for Ballarat, though, is they have lost Rhett Montgomery, who's
11:28 decided to head back to the Sandville and play with Central Districts after playing
11:34 the first five games with the Swans this year.
11:36 So that's going to be a big blow.
11:39 Montgomery pretty much beat Regan off his own boot a few weeks back there.
11:43 So I'd imagine that that's going to be a very big loss for them to take.
11:48 East Point's midfield's flying.
11:49 They look like they generally look like probably the number one team from the Ballarat side
11:55 of the league, as opposed to the eastern side of the league.
11:58 But I think and I think they'll be probably too strong at Eastern Oval.
12:02 The other match, of course, is the Lakers versus Sunbury.
12:06 No, no push over this one.
12:09 The Sunbury's have been up have been really up the last two weeks.
12:13 Big wins against top quality opposition.
12:15 They wouldn't want to take the Lakers lightly, though.
12:17 The Lakers did everything but win last week, so they should have got the points.
12:20 Yeah, it's a big call to think that the Lakers are any sort of threat, isn't it?
12:24 Oh, well, they've got to be given a chance.
12:25 I mean, as I say, Sunbury would have been up the last two weeks.
12:29 The Lakers are right in the right, are due for a win.
12:33 Probably not going to get it this week, but you've got to give them it's not going to
12:36 be a blowout.
12:37 Let's put it that way.
12:38 It won't be a 80-90 point blowout, I would have thought.
12:39 I'd imagine the Lakers will be pretty competitive for most of the contest.
12:43 They ran East Point to four goals till three quarter time a couple of weeks back.
12:47 So, you know, they're in the contest.
12:48 There are signs there this year.
12:50 The signs are there.
12:51 They're coming good.
12:52 The other highlight out of course out of that day is the netball clash, which is two sides
12:57 have only lost once all year playing each other.
12:59 So that'll be the feature for the A grade for the weekend for the Lakers versus Sunbury.
13:04 Very good.
13:05 So, yeah, plenty to get a feel for at the weekend, both in the Ballarat and Central
13:10 Highlands Football League.
13:11 So thanks, Greg, and thanks to everyone for joining us for this edition of Friday Footy
13:16 Frenzy brought to you by Sheds and Shades by Design.
13:21 And yeah, looking forward to getting it to Skipton on Saturday.
13:27 And Greg, where are you heading?
13:29 At this stage, we're hoping to head down to East Point versus Ballarat, but we'll just
13:32 see how the current throat and flu sort of despite this bands in the meantime.
13:39 Yeah, it'll be interesting because they could well be, remember, in the height of COVID
13:44 and we seem to be getting another batch of it every week.
13:47 There'll be one or two players pulling out the last minute, but we will see what happens
13:52 in this environment.
13:53 So thanks, Greg, and thanks for everyone for watching us on this edition of Friday Footy
13:58 Frenzy.
