Transcript
00:00 The assistance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to our countrymen,
00:05 the approval of some progressive bills of the Congress,
00:09 and the victory of a Filipino African-American as Miss Universe Philippines 2024.
00:15 These are the discussions of Professor Antonio Contreras in Punto de Vista.
00:20 Professor.
00:20 [Music]
00:27 Thank you very much, Diane.
00:30 Proactive, progressive, and unique.
00:34 That is what we will talk about this morning.
00:36 Because these last few days, we have been drowning in news about the pedialyx hearings in the Senate.
00:44 And the chaos in the bantarrak of Mayor Alice Goh.
00:50 And even the corruption in the Senate.
00:54 Let's go to the things that are pleasant and heartwarming.
00:59 The first one is the proactive hearings.
01:02 These are the actions of the government to bring the government closer to the people.
01:10 Places that were not able to reach for help before have now reached there.
01:16 The giving of clothes, the giving of aid,
01:22 and the directives of President Marcos to prepare the government for the upcoming election.
01:31 We know that our brothers and sisters and countrymen will be disappointed.
01:35 Proactive, prepared, and bringing the government closer to the people.
01:40 That's good.
01:42 Progressive, because these last few days, the House of Representatives passed laws that are really progressive.
01:50 The first one is the approval of the divorce bill.
01:55 The absolute divorce bill. I already discussed that yesterday.
01:58 And there is also a second reading.
02:00 This is the approval of the use of medical marijuana.
02:05 That is the second reading.
02:06 Medical use of marijuana is a bit controversial, but we should study it
02:11 because it has a positive effect, especially on those who need medical use of it.
02:20 And as a senior citizen, you might think I'm not a senior, but I am a senior citizen.
02:24 You can see that in my head.
02:26 I am a senior citizen.
02:28 I am happy with what they did in approving and expanding the benefits to seniors.
02:34 Social pension, the exchange of benefits so that the benefits are more favorable to senior citizens.
02:45 That's good.
02:46 Because we can see that you can measure the quality of society
02:52 and how it is taken care of by their seniors.
02:56 And it's different because we know that we are used to the winners in the beauty pageant,
03:02 the white, the mestiza.
03:05 Chelsea Manalo's victory as Miss Universe Philippines, the one we are going to throw in Mexico in 2024,
03:16 is different because she is the first Filipino with African-American blood.
03:22 Her father is African-American, her mother is Filipino, Tagalog.
03:26 She won.
03:27 Although many people are saying, "What is that? Why did she win when she was black?"
03:32 But black is beautiful. Black is powerful.
03:36 As of now, we can see that this is a milestone in the history of beauty pageants in the Philippines.
03:43 Because this is the recognition that beauty cannot be obtained by the color of the skin.
03:52 There.
03:53 We should say many things.
03:56 So let's not get lost in the problems we are experiencing now.
04:02 There are challenges, but on the other hand,
04:05 the government is ready to move to bring them closer to the people,
04:10 and the people are getting closer to the government.
04:13 There are also progressive bills that the House will pass,
04:17 which I hope the Senate will pass.
04:20 And this difference, we can say what relevance it has to national development,
04:27 this is different because our consciousness, our attitude is different.
04:32 We should not think too much about traditional things.
04:35 Even if it's black, it's beautiful.
04:39 That's all, Dianne, my point of view for today.
04:41 Back to you in the studio. Thank you very much.
04:45 And thank you very much to you, Professor Contreras.
