00:00Because of the number of crimes being committed against POGO, including human trafficking,
00:05Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is now passing a legislation
00:09that will completely ban the operation of POGO in the country.
00:13This is Daniel Manalastas' report.
00:18Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is now passing a legislation
00:22that will completely ban the operation of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGO in the country.
00:28In the midst of a series of cases and crimes,
00:32Gatchalian said based on the cost-benefit analysis of the Department of Finance in 2022,
00:38POGO's economic benefits will reach P133 to P144 billion per year.
00:45But the loss of income in the country, POGO,
00:49reached P147 billion per year
00:53due to the potential loss of housing and income from tourism.
00:58He also added expenses to police operations such as surveillance and raids.
01:03Instead of income, POGO brings per-visio to the country
01:07because expenses are higher than income.
01:11The increase in the incidence of human trafficking and online scams
01:16also affects POGO.
01:18When asked by Senate President Francis G. Escudero,
01:22At the same, the legal POGO that is doing illegal things,
01:26it will continue until it runs out.
01:28My point is,
01:32the crime, no matter who did it,
01:35whether it started legally or illegally,
01:38if it is illegal, it should be stopped.
01:41Personally, what I want the most,
01:44if we want to ban gambling,
01:46here, the Filipinos are not gambling yet,
01:50let's just ban everything,
01:52so that there will be no more gambling in the Philippines.
01:55For now, an investigation is ongoing in the Senate,
01:58regarding the illegal POGO.
02:00And a hot issue now is the discussion
02:02on the identity of Van Van Mayor, Alice Goh,
02:05even if the mayor refused that she is in the POGO business.
02:09The mayor's citizenship was also questioned,
02:12but Escudero said,
02:14The one who can question his citizenship
02:17and qualification as a mayor
02:20through a co-warrantor case,
02:23is the Solicitor General only.
02:25Let me say it this way, the burden of proof
02:27is on those saying she's not.
02:29If it is illegal and she is involved,
02:31there should be another case,
02:33and maybe, that is the stronger case
02:35to suspend her,
02:37preventive suspension only,
02:39rather than the citizenship
02:42that should be handled by the Solicitor General's Office.
