Pretty Baby (1978) is a controversial American historical drama film directed by Louis Malle, starring Brooke Shields as Violet, a 12-year-old girl being raised in a brothel in Storyville, the red-light district of New Orleans, by her prostitute mother Hattie (Susan Sarandon). The film also features Keith Carradine as Bellocq, a photographer who takes an interest in Violet.
The film was highly controversial upon its release due to its depiction of child sexual exploitation and the nude scenes featuring the 11-year-old Shields. However, many critics praised the film for its artistic merit and social commentary, with Roger Ebert arguing that "Pretty Baby has been attacked in some quarters as child porn. It's not. It's an evocation of a time and a place and a sad chapter of Americana."
The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival and won the Technical Grand Prix. Ferdinand Morton's score was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music.
