Never Rescue a Kangaroo from Water If You Wanna Be Safe

You've probably seen those viral images of kangaroos chilling in shallow water, seemingly inviting you to join them. But in Australia, it’s likely they're trying to hurt you. Some folks on social media say kangaroos might lure predators into the water to drown them, using their strength to hold heads underwater. While there's evidence of this tactic with animals like dogs, it’s not clear if kangaroos would do this to humans. They usually use water to escape threats, not as a murder strategy. Still, it's best to keep your distance and definitely keep your dogs out of the water if a kangaroo is around. Credit:

00:00Food is essential, right?
00:02Good news if you somehow find yourself in the middle of the ocean, you won't starve there.
00:07Almost all seawater fish can be eaten raw, just like sushi.
00:12Parasites can't survive in salt water, so this fish is pretty safe.
00:16Sadly, you won't have any soy sauce to dip your makeshift sashimi into.
00:23You won't starve in the middle of the forest either.
00:26Inner bark from pine, aspen, maple, willow and birch trees are edible.
00:31And while it's not as yummy as sushi, it's still okay.
00:34Plus, it contains vitamin C.
00:37Also, using pine needles, you can make fantastic tea that will warm you on cold winter days.
00:45Now on to the bad news.
00:46Eating snow is a big no-no.
00:49And it's not about the suspiciously yellow type of snow.
00:52Snow will neither fill your belly nor quench your thirst.
00:56In fact, eating it can lower your body temperature.
00:59And your body will also need more water to melt the snow than the amount you will consume,
01:04making you even more dehydrated.
01:10Right, even if you look for food in your own kitchen, it can still be pretty risky.
01:15When making delicious pastries, keep the flour away from the fire
01:19because it is a highly flammable substance that can burst into flames in seconds.
01:24It is 35 times more flammable than coal, so make sure it's in a safe place.
01:31There's one more cooking tip you gotta know.
01:33If oil catches fire, don't try to put it out with water.
01:37It'll only make it worse.
01:38Instead, you should throw baking soda on it if the fire is small.
01:42And if it's a bigger one, use a fire extinguisher.
01:46You can also put a lid on the pan.
01:48The oxygen will soon run out and the fire can't survive without it.
01:54Imagine you're walking near a lake or a pond with your dog,
01:57and you see a kangaroo in the middle of the lake.
02:00Whatever you do, don't try to help it and keep your dog on a leash.
02:04Kangaroos do this when they feel threatened by a predator.
02:08And when the unlucky predator enters the water, the kangaroo can drown the animal.
02:13It has been reported that many dogs have been hurt this way,
02:17so make sure your pooch and you are safe.
02:19Stay on the bank.
02:22Hiking is fun, but there are many dangers lurking in the forest.
02:26I bet you've seen people on TV telling to suck the venom out if you've been bitten by a snake.
02:31But that's a terrible thing to do.
02:34The thing is, it can introduce harmful bacteria to the wound.
02:38Instead, you should calm down, lie on the ground,
02:41adjust your position so that your wound is below your heart,
02:45and call emergency services immediately.
02:48Or your friends should rush you to the hospital.
02:51In emergency situations, you can start a fire using your reading glasses.
02:56Align them with the sun and point them at some easily flammable material, like dried grass.
03:02Soon, you'll see smoke.
03:04If the glasses don't have high magnification, you can add water to the lens to enhance the effect.
03:11Never run away from a cougar, and don't make eye contact.
03:15Looking the animal straight in the eye signals that you're up for a challenge.
03:19Instead, try to make yourself bigger.
03:22Spread your arms, puff your chest, and start yelling at the animal.
03:26Dangerous insects are everywhere.
03:29Before you put on your shoes, give them a good shake,
03:32because you definitely don't want your toes to meet with a spider or a scorpion.
03:37Rattlesnakes are known for getting into sleeping bags on hot summer days.
03:41I mean, you can't blame them.
03:43Everyone wants to escape the heat.
03:45So before you get into one, make sure there are no wiggly creatures inside.
03:49Also, a campfire can keep the snake away.
03:53You've probably seen movies where bees attack one of the characters,
03:57and they jump into the water to get rid of the insects.
04:00While it may look plausible, the reality is very different.
04:04The bees will simply wait for you to run out of air and resurface.
04:07These guys are really smart.
04:12If you fall into a frozen lake and can't find your way up,
04:15go to the darkest spot in the ice, which is usually the hole you've fallen through.
04:20Snow and ice reflect light and are usually much brighter than an opening in the ice.
04:25After getting out, don't try to walk.
04:28Slide yourself away from the hole like seals do.
04:32Swimming is a fun activity, unless you've fallen into a frozen lake.
04:37But rip currents can easily ruin your fun, too.
04:40Should you ever end up in such a situation,
04:43start swimming parallel to the shore, and you will be out of the current.
04:47To get some rest while swimming, arch your back to stay afloat.
04:51Position your hips up in a horizontal position.
04:54Relax. No tension.
04:57Pull your shoulder blades together and release chest tension.
05:00Stay relaxed for optimal performance.
05:03And don't panic.
05:06If you don't know how to swim and you're not ready to shell out money to buy a life jacket,
05:10your pants have your back.
05:13They can be used as an actual life jacket.
05:16Tie them at the openings after filling them with air.
05:19Put them around your neck, and you're good to go.
05:22Hope your pants are waterproof.
05:26Your pants won't help, though, if you see a drowning person.
05:29Your first instinct will be to jump into the water and help them, right?
05:33But if you don't have a flotation device,
05:36they will grab you and pull you under the water, putting you both at risk.
05:40So the best thing to do is throw them something that floats,
05:44or help them get out using a stick or rope.
05:47Diving in dark waters can be disorienting,
05:50since it might be hard to find a way to the surface.
05:53Exhale some air. It's less dense than the water and will always float to the surface.
05:58Follow these air bubbles, and you'll be safe.
06:01In a pinch, you can drink salt water.
06:04But first, you need to dilute it four times,
06:07because salt water is four times saltier than your bodily fluids.
06:11To put it simply, you will need three glasses of fresh water for one cup of seawater.
06:16Mix this all together, and you can safely drink it.
06:19Salt water has many minerals that are good for you.
06:22But it can never replace fresh water, so drink it only if you must.
06:28You're on a beach, and your legs are submerged up to your knees.
06:32But suddenly, you notice that the water is receding.
06:35You should run as fast as possible to the highest point you see,
06:39because that can be the sign of an incoming tsunami.
06:43Other signs are ground shaking and loud noises.
06:48You're not 100% safe even in your own bed.
06:52Imagine you're sleeping in complete darkness.
06:55But a strong smell of gas wakes you up.
06:58Don't turn on the lights.
07:00The spark from a light switch can light up the gas, making the problem bigger than it has to be.
07:05Don't use any form of light. Even your phone's flashlight can ignite the gas.
07:10Now picture this. A service dog approaches you on the street.
07:14You might want to pet it, but you should not do that.
07:18Stay still and don't move.
07:20Let the handler move the dog.
07:22If the handler isn't around and the dog is trying to get your attention,
07:26the handler might be in trouble.
07:28So follow the dog. You might save someone's life.
07:34Never turn on the lights.
07:36You might save someone's life.
07:40Never post on social media when you aren't at home.
07:43Thieves can use this info to break into your home.
07:46This should be obvious, but many people ignore this advice.
07:50You can post your pictures of the beautiful beach you visited when you get back home.
08:01That's it for today.
