00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down
00:10 our picks for the strongest kaiju
00:12 within the Godzilla universe.
00:14 (kaiju screeching)
00:17 Number 10, Rodan.
00:24 Godzilla wasn't the only giant kaiju
00:27 to help establish the house of Toho back in the day.
00:30 (kaiju screeching)
00:33 Rodan debuted all the way back in 1956 with its own film,
00:41 before entering the Godzilla universe
00:43 with 1964's Ghidorah, the three-headed monster.
00:48 Rodan's main attack strength lies
00:50 within the supersonic wings
00:52 that it's able to conjure up with its wings.
00:54 (kaiju screeching)
00:57 Elsewhere, its evolved fire Rodan vision
01:04 lends this irradiated pteranodon one serious power upgrade.
01:09 Rodan is agile too, and able to dart
01:12 and fly around his opponents in order to keep them guessing.
01:16 (roaring)
01:18 - I'm under control here, I'm under control!
01:21 (screaming)
01:24 - This kaiju mainstay may not like
01:28 to play with others that often,
01:30 but we can't say we're surprised.
01:32 Rodan is a true winged assassin.
01:34 Number nine, Hedorah.
01:36 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah tends to be a divisive film
01:41 among Godzilla fans, thanks to its uneven tone
01:45 and psychedelic visuals.
01:47 Yet, its titular antagonist, Hedorah,
01:50 just may be a slept on kaiju
01:52 when it comes to its sickening power.
01:55 (roaring)
01:57 The smug monster's poisonous properties
02:02 rack up a disturbing amount of human victims
02:05 throughout the film, while Hedorah's toxic physical makeup
02:09 makes him a challenging adversary.
02:11 (roaring)
02:13 Godzilla finds it difficult to come up with a game plan
02:21 since Hedorah spouts off corrosive, acidic,
02:24 and toxic chunks that seem to debilitate
02:27 the king of the monsters at every turn.
02:30 (roaring)
02:34 Number eight, Mothra.
02:40 We all know that Mothra is the OG queen moth,
02:44 dominating her Godzilla film appearances
02:46 with wind attacks, powerful lightning,
02:49 and sealed threads that can easily incapacitate an opponent.
02:53 (dramatic music)
02:56 Her side appearances in the rebirth of Mothra films
03:03 lend her even more impressive powers,
03:06 to the point where she can dominate
03:08 a three-headed space dragon without breaking a sweat.
03:12 (dramatic music)
03:14 (roaring)
03:16 That said, Mothra's other strengths
03:23 actually lie within her peace-loving nature,
03:26 since it's her restraint
03:28 that we find so charming and lovable.
03:30 This is a kaiju that's truly heroic,
03:33 only causing chaos if provoked or threatened,
03:36 and that, we think, is a welcome breath of fresh air.
03:40 (roaring)
03:44 (dramatic music)
03:46 Number seven, Gigan.
03:48 Call the case of this next kaiju
03:50 one of both style and substance.
03:53 There's just no way around it, Gigan looks cool.
03:57 (roaring)
03:59 He may not always be the smartest alien cyborg on the block,
04:07 since Gigan seems to be a near-constant victim
04:10 of alien mind control.
04:12 This aside, Gigan arrived armed
04:14 with some serious heavy artillery,
04:17 alternating hooks and chainsaws on his hands,
04:20 a deadly buzzsaw on his stomach,
04:23 and a vicious mean streak.
04:25 (explosion)
04:28 He even makes Godzilla bleed on screen.
04:31 Gigan's visor makes it difficult
04:33 to guess what's going on upstairs.
04:36 Maybe he's thinking about his pal, Megalon.
04:38 But all we know is that we always wanna show up
04:41 for a Gigan party.
04:43 (gunshots)
04:46 Number six, Biollante.
04:54 The world of Godzilla fandom has largely come around
04:57 to how sympathetic and even tragic Biollante is
05:00 as a Godzilla antagonist.
05:03 (roaring)
05:09 She's created in the aftermath of a bombing
05:12 that takes the life of one Erika Shiragami,
05:15 when her father, Dr. Genshiro Shiragami,
05:18 splices her DNA with Godzilla cells and a rose.
05:22 Biollante's rose form and her evolved crocodilian iteration
05:27 takes Godzilla to the absolute limit in combat.
05:30 (roaring)
05:33 (explosion)
05:36 She's able to quickly heal her wounds,
05:43 while her acidic spit and poisonous corrosive properties
05:47 are similar to that of the smog monster, Hedorah.
05:50 We can't help but feel sorry for Biollante, however,
06:00 particularly after she succumbs to Godzilla's attacks
06:04 in their final battle.
06:05 Number five, SpaceGodzilla.
06:08 It isn't often that we see Kaiju antagonists
06:11 with psychic abilities within the Godzilla universe.
06:15 This is just one of the reasons
06:16 why SpaceGodzilla is so dangerous.
06:20 Let's forget for a moment
06:28 the creature's rather uninspired moniker,
06:31 and instead focus on SpaceG's abilities
06:34 of telekinesis, telepathy, and even levitation.
06:38 SpaceGodzilla's energy shield can reflect back
06:41 the OG Godzilla's atomic breath attack as well,
06:45 giving this Kaiju tons of defense properties
06:48 against his opponents.
06:57 There's also an aura of malevolence and spite involved
07:01 with nearly everything SpaceGodzilla does,
07:04 lending him the reputation of a planner and a tactician,
07:08 as opposed to a mindless Kaiju beast.
07:11 - SpaceGodzilla has won.
07:13 All hope is lost.
07:15 - Number four, King Ghidorah.
07:19 A Ghidorah by any other name would still be a king.
07:23 This thousands years old dragon
07:25 has reared his three heads in many Godzilla films
07:29 over the years, including Mecha versions
07:32 and the Monster X upgrade, Kaiser Ghidorah,
07:35 from Godzilla Final Wars.
07:37 He's even taken on rare protagonist roles
07:45 in films like 2001's Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah,
07:50 Giant Monster's All-Out Attack.
07:53 (roaring)
07:55 King Ghidorah primarily loves to be bad, however,
08:05 and utilizing his lightning strikes and energy shields
08:09 for God level attacks and defense capabilities.
08:13 Said simply, it's always a fight when King Ghidorah shows up.
08:18 (roaring)
08:20 Number three, Destroyah.
08:28 We're very used to seeing Godzilla take on
08:31 a myriad of monster of the week style enemy fights.
08:34 Most of these battles don't possess
08:36 particularly high stakes, and we never feel a semblance
08:39 that there's anything personal between the opponents.
08:43 Destroyah is something of an outlier, however.
08:46 A demonic Kaiju that seems to be committing carnage
08:50 with relish and zeal.
08:52 Godzilla actually perished at the finale of 1995's
09:04 Godzilla vs. Destroyah, an event that made
09:07 international headlines at the time.
09:09 (roaring)
09:14 (dramatic music)
09:17 The fact that Destroyah was brought into creation
09:22 via the Oxygen Destroyah, the 86, the OG Godzilla,
09:26 isn't lost on fans either, with this fact always coming
09:29 into play with regard to its dangerous reputation.
09:33 (roaring)
09:37 (dramatic music)
09:40 Number two, Mechagodzilla.
09:47 It's a walking arsenal, a disaster waiting to happen
09:51 with one fearsome moniker, Mechagodzilla.
09:54 (roaring)
09:56 Sometimes it arrives from space, more often it's made
10:04 by human hands, and arrives armed with missiles
10:07 that can fire from practically anywhere on its body.
10:11 Mechagodzilla can fire energy beams from its eyes
10:14 at 360 degrees, thanks to its swiveling head.
10:19 This, combined with the cross-attack beam from its chest,
10:30 means that Mechagodzilla can basically fire
10:33 in every direction all at once.
10:35 It's honestly an impressive sight when Mecha-G
10:38 goes all out in a fight, all energy fireworks
10:42 and pulse blasts that can lay low
10:44 basically anything in its path.

11:09 Number one, Godzilla.
11:13 It's perhaps the easiest layup possible,
11:16 as well as a foregone conclusion to our list.
11:19 What other kaiju could take the number one spot
11:22 other than the king of the monsters?
11:25 (roaring)
11:27 Godzilla's power levels and abilities
11:35 have fluctuated over the years,
11:37 with some iterations, such as Final Wars Godzilla,
11:40 possessing little trouble taking down enemies.
11:52 Still, other versions of Godzilla have been forced
11:54 to team up with other kaiju in order to take down
11:57 a larger threat.
11:59 At the end of the day, however,
12:00 the staying power of Godzilla is undeniable.
12:04 Take your pick, movie appearances, comic book dominance,
12:16 animated adaptations, Godzilla has done them all
12:19 and remained unconquerable for decades
12:22 with no sign of stopping.
