00:00 "There's only one way off of this planet, baby, and that's through me!"
00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most spine-chilling,
00:07 horrific extraterrestrials to ever grace the silver screen.
00:11 "I know. This thing is hunting us. All of us."
00:15 Number 30. The Mimics - Edge of Tomorrow
00:20 The stakes in Edge of Tomorrow are epically high. An unstoppable alien army has crash-landed in
00:25 Europe, threatening to spread across the globe.
00:28 "Right, well first of all, you're not fighting an army. You have to think of this
00:32 as a single organism."
00:34 The Mimics are incredibly intimidating. Their biomechanical design gives them an otherworldly
00:40 presence, and the ability to burrow through the ground like a hedgehog made of knives.
00:44 In battle, the armies of humanity have suffered one defeat after another.
00:48 As it turns out, that's because these alien-killing machines have control over time itself.
00:54 "But this is the brain. It controls them all. And this is the Omega.
01:01 And the Omega has the ability to control time."
01:05 The Omega Mimic can pull a groundhog day when its alpha generals are killed. That knowledge of the
01:10 future allows the Mimics to repeat battles over and over until victory is achieved.
01:15 Number 29. Aliens - Communion
01:19 This lesser-known sci-fi horror film is based on a book by Whitley Strieber about his own
01:24 alleged encounter with aliens and subsequent flashbacks.
01:27 The film stars Christopher Walken as Strieber at his unhinged best.
01:30 "Bop bop, bop bop, bop bop bop. Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop."
01:38 "You look like you're dressed for your first communion."
01:40 It straddles the line between slapstick and horror. On the one hand, Walken's spending a
01:45 surprisingly large amount of time dancing with the aliens he meets. On the other hand, there are
01:50 truly frightening scenes like the one where he removes the face of a grey to reveal the slimy
01:55 creature underneath. All in all, the film feels like a bad 1980s acid trip, leading the viewer
02:01 to share in Strieber's confusion and uncertainty. "Is there something under that? Because I don't
02:05 believe that one." Number 28. Alien Beasts - Attack the Block
02:10 Humans have been encountering creatures from outer space since Georges Méliès introduced us to his
02:14 moon creatures in 1902. Given that aliens have been part of motion pictures throughout cinematic
02:19 history, it can be tough to come up with an original concept. Enter writer-director Joe
02:24 Cornish and attack the block. "You brought it in the end. I don't want no trouble.
02:28 You brought fed in the end. Listen to me, bruv. You brought an alien invasion."
02:35 A meteor crashes into a public housing council estate, releasing a horde of alien beasts. The
02:41 residents of the block, including a teenage street gang, must defend themselves and their neighbors
02:46 from the threat. Imagine spiky, eyeless space wolf/gorilla hybrids with glow-in-the-dark jaws,
02:52 and you'll have the right idea. The beasts are killing machines, and only the ingenuity of the
02:58 residents helped them survive the night. "No. I know them. They're my neighbors.
03:02 They protected me." Number 27. The Strangers - Dark City
03:07 Dark City is one of the most underappreciated films of the 1990s. As protagonist John Murdoch
03:13 navigates the city and his own distorted memories, he discovers the truth. The pasty white men The
03:19 Strangers chasing him over this noir landscape are not men at all. They are psychic aliens using
03:25 their powers, hive mind, and machines to run experiments on human test subjects. "And this
03:30 man Murdoch is more powerful than we thought. He's becoming like us. So we must become like him."
03:39 The city isn't a city either, but a giant vessel in space. The creatures are dying from an unknown
03:45 cause and hope that extracting the secret of human individuality will cure them. The Strangers are the
03:50 unseen power behind the world of the film, manipulating events and people for their own
03:55 dark ends. "They mix and match our memories as they see fit, trying to divine what makes us
04:01 unique. One day a man might be an inspector, the next someone entirely different."
04:07 Number 26. The Shimmer - Annihilation
04:10 We humans tend to anthropomorphize everything in fiction, including aliens. We ascribe human
04:16 thought and motivations to characters so that the audience can better understand what's happening.
04:21 But in Alex Garland's 2018 adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer's novel Annihilation,
04:26 the alien presence at the center of the story is alien in both mind and body.
04:30 "I don't know what it wants, or if it wants, but it will grow until it encompasses everything."
04:39 The Shimmer's motivations are completely unknown, so the audience is left only with the results of
04:44 its actions. The Shimmer is a catalyst of change, warping and altering everything it touches.
04:50 Change can be terrifying, especially when it's a change that results in the annihilation of
04:55 what existed before. "I attacked it. I'm not sure it even knew I was there." "It came here for a
05:02 reason. It was mutating our environment. It was destroying everything." This more existentialist
05:09 horror is what makes The Shimmer scary on a literally cellular level.
05:13 Number 25. Cooper - Super 8
05:16 What if E.T. were a horror film? That seemed to be the question J.J. Abrams chose to answer with
05:22 his kids-on-bike classic Super 8. A group of teens from Lillian, Ohio witness a violent train
05:27 derailment. The crash was no accident, however. The U.S. Army was transporting a large alien
05:33 monster, and it escaped. Soon after, the residents of Lillian began to go missing.
05:38 "Send units over to their houses immediately. You copy all that?"
05:40 "Copy. And Jack, we're getting a lot of unusual calls."
05:45 The creature is barely seen, allowing the audience's imaginations to run wild.
05:50 In truth, though, Cooper isn't a monster at all. He's just a wrongfully detained interstellar
05:55 traveler trying to return home. No Ohioans were harmed during the making of his spaceship.
06:01 "He has been desperate to reconstitute his ship since it crashed here in '58.
06:06 But instead of giving him the help he needs, we've held him as a prisoner."
06:11 Number 24. Skin Thief Alien - Under the Skin
06:15 The Skin Thief Alien from Under the Skin is easily one of the weirdest roles in Scarlett
06:19 Johansson's filmography. Part road trip, part acid trip, Under the Skin shows the
06:24 journey of her alien as she hunts men across the Scottish countryside.
06:27 "I saw you in the room." "You saw me?"
06:30 "Earlier, yeah." "Are you having a laugh?"
06:32 "You saw me?" "Why? I thought we were going to a
06:35 drink and a dance." "You alone? You're not alone, are you?"
06:38 Once captured, the men are harvested, leaving only their skin. She is methodical and seems
06:44 devoid of emotion, although this changes as she begins to identify with the humans she was sent
06:49 to prey on. Both her origins and motives are left unclear, resulting in an incredibly unsettling
06:55 cinematic experience. Her cold, calculated actions and eerie, otherworldly presence make
07:00 her a truly haunting and iconic cinematic alien. "It's a nice place if you want some solitude.
07:07 You know, to gather your thoughts and all that. Yeah, so enjoy yourself anyway."
07:13 Number 23. Jeanjacket - Nope
07:16 Jordan Peele's Nope is a complex film examining our culture's obsession with spectacle and violence.
07:22 "My family and I have bore witness to an absolute spectacle.
07:27 One that you'll be seeing here today." It's also just an incredible horror movie.
07:34 By looking up at this flying object, humans on the ground make themselves vulnerable to attack.
07:39 It's ranch owner O.J. who realizes that the object is not a spaceship, but a wild animal.
07:45 He and his sister M. observe its behavior, learn its weaknesses, and use that knowledge to kill it.
07:50 "What did you see? Hmm?
07:52 That's big. How big? Big. What'd it look like? I don't know."
08:00 In the interim, however, the creature, dubbed Jeanjacket, is a blight on the countryside.
08:05 When its true form is revealed, Jeanjacket appears to be some kind of giant flying carnivorous
08:10 jellyfish. It consumes dozens of people and animals, creating a spectacle to lure in its prey.
08:17 Number 22. Owl Aliens - The Fourth Kind
08:21 The online UFO community has believed in the connection between aliens and owls for a long
08:26 time. This was an idea that the science fiction thriller The Fourth Kind picked up and ran with
08:31 in 2009. "Just staring at me. Had you ever seen it before?"
08:43 For the uninitiated, the idea is that many people who have been abducted by aliens remember seeing
08:49 owls right before or after their experience. These are implanted memories that aliens have
08:54 been using to hide their appearance. The film is shot in documentary style, with reenactments used
09:00 side by side with faux found footage. The aliens are never actually seen on film, lending them an
09:06 air of unknowable menace. "The FBI have paid them 353 visits." "In the end, what you believe
09:12 is yours to decide." "In the end, what you believe is yours to decide."
09:17 Number 21. Clover - Cloverfield A found-footage kaiju film was a great idea,
09:23 putting the audience right there in the middle of the action. And that's a big part of what makes
09:27 Cloverfield so memorable and terrifying. The film sees a gigantic extraterrestrial wreak
09:33 absolute havoc in Manhattan. While the monster isn't often seen, the small glimpses we do get
09:46 are more than enough to scare the heck out of us. The entire setup makes you wonder,
09:50 would we survive a giant monster attack? And the answer is probably not.
09:55 "Those aren't gonna hit us, are they? Oh my god, they hit it!"
09:59 Conversely, the second film in the franchise, 10 Cloverfield Lane,
10:04 is a slow-burn psychological thriller that ends with the reveal of a full-blown alien invasion.
10:09 The quadrupedal figure we see there is honestly pretty scary too.
10:13 Number 20. Death Angels - The A Quiet Place Franchise
10:17 There's not a whole lot that we know about these mysterious predators,
10:20 but they sure know how to make an entrance.
10:22 After being carried to our unsuspecting planet by meteors,
10:26 the terrifying creatures quickly brought society to its knees. Incredibly fast and hypersensitive
10:33 to any sort of noise, they've essentially forced the remnants of humankind into quiet mode.
10:38 With their long limbs, elaborate and slimy auditory systems, along with wickedly sharp claws,
10:45 these creatures seem tailor-made for hunting humans.
10:48 And their lack of eyes only adds to their creep-out factor.
10:52 Number 19. The Greys - Dark Skies
11:03 While this film got generally mixed reviews from critics,
11:06 the aliens at the center of the story still made a lasting impression on audiences.
11:11 "What's wrong, Daddy?"
11:12 With their wispy arms, hunched backs and oversized heads,
11:16 the Greys are by no means the most fearsome-looking extraterrestrials on our list today.
11:20 But their thoroughly alien anatomy is definitely strange enough to make your skin crawl.
11:25 The real reason they earn a spot here is how the filmmaker decided to portray them in the story.
11:30 Subscribing to the "less is more" philosophy of the film,
11:33 the film's creators decided to make the film a bit more realistic.
11:37 The film's creators decided to make the film a bit more realistic.
11:41 The Greys are never fully revealed to the audience and appear in silhouettes and shadows.
11:46 And when you add a penchant for kidnapping vulnerable humans to the mix,
11:56 they go from creepy to downright horrifying.
11:59 "We are the Greys!"
12:01 Number 18. Brandon Breyer - Brightburn
12:10 In terms of alien anatomy, it doesn't get much more unassuming than this.
12:14 Brandon Breyer looks like your run-of-the-mill young boy.
12:17 What he's capable of, however, is anything but ordinary.
12:21 Produced by James Gunn, Brightburn essentially asks the question,
12:28 "What if Clark Kent had turned out bad?"
12:30 Brandon Breyer's origin story mirrors that of Superman,
12:34 right down to the spaceship, incredible powers, and rural upbringing.
12:38 When Brandon's powers awaken, however,
12:40 the spaceship he arrived in gives him a crash course in villainy and global domination.
12:44 Creepy kids always bring an extra scare factor to horror films.
12:53 But Brandon's mannerisms, predatory nature,
12:56 and awe-inspiring abilities take it to a whole new level.
12:59 We're very glad Superman is historically on humanity's side.
13:03 Number 17. The Aliens - Signs
13:12 The mention of M. Night Shyamalan ignites more jeers than cheers these days,
13:16 but the once-promising director gave us some unforgettable scares in the sci-fi thriller Signs.
13:22 Although simplistic in design, these outer-space foreigners left a lasting impression on moviegoers.
13:28 Who could forget the intense kitchen scene or the jaw-dropping birthday interruption footage?
13:32 The horror came from what we didn't see,
13:39 and Shyamalan built upon the tension to create some truly memorable moments.
13:43 Let's hope those splashes of water were enough to keep them from coming back.
13:47 Number 16. Syl - Species
13:50 "That's his code name there, Syl."
13:52 Created by genetically splicing human DNA with that of alien DNA,
13:57 the attractive Syl is one alien that isn't shy about her intentions.
14:01 "I wouldn't hurt you."
14:02 "Yes, you would. You just don't know it yet."
14:05 "I don't know what you're talking about."
14:07 "I don't know what you're talking about."
14:09 "I don't know what you're talking about."
14:11 "I don't know what you're talking about."
14:13 "I don't know what you're talking about."
14:15 "You don't know it yet."
14:17 "No, I wouldn't!"
14:19 With an unstoppable desire to reproduce, she searches for a mate,
14:23 often with extremely deadly results.
14:26 Strong, smart, and possessing incredible regenerative capabilities,
14:30 Syl is as dangerous as she is sexy.
14:32 "How did you get in here?"
14:34 "I stole the key."
14:36 "What?"
14:37 "I saw you downstairs, but you were with all those people.
14:41 So I thought I'd come up and wait."
14:42 Number 15. Aliens, aka ghouls, they live.
14:47 "What's your problem?"
14:48 It's a question that's plagued many an alien enthusiast and conspiracy theorist.
14:53 What if they already walk among us?
14:55 In this 1988 sci-fi action horror flick,
14:58 the extraterrestrials take advantage of their humanoid anatomy to pass as earthlings,
15:02 albeit with plenty of help from elaborate disguises.
15:05 "You see, I take these glasses off, she looks like a regular person, doesn't she, huh?
15:09 Put 'em back on, formaldehyde face!"
15:12 Like many of filmmaker John Carpenter's movies,
15:14 they live took time to find its fan base.
15:17 Negative reviews of the film be damned.
15:19 Today, these extraterrestrials are recognized for what they really are,
15:22 yet another masterclass in monstrous aliens courtesy of a horror legend.
15:27 With their blue skin, buggish eyes, and lipless mouths,
15:31 these alien invaders also earned the name they were given in the credits.
15:35 There, they were called ghouls.
15:38 "All the sex and violence on the screen has gone too far for me.
15:41 I'm fed up with it.
15:43 Filmmakers like George Romero and John Carpenter have to show some restraint."
15:48 Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name,
16:00 Dreamcatcher follows a group of friends that comes across a parasitic alien species
16:04 that has the ability to possess an unwilling victim's body
16:07 as well as use telepathy to control their victims.
16:10 The main alien antagonist, given the name of Mr. Grey,
16:15 along with several sharp-toothed alien worms,
16:18 seeks to populate the planet with their larvae.
16:20 But it's his methodical and gruesome methods that make Mr. Grey stand out
16:30 and make him one of the fiercest aliens this side of the Milky Way.
16:34 Number 13.
16:35 The Bioraptors - Pitch Black
16:37 Before he became Dominic Toretto,
16:44 this sci-fi film gave Vin Diesel a huge leading role.
16:48 A blend of sci-fi, horror, and action,
16:50 Pitch Black sees Diesel playing a surgically enhanced ex-soldier-turned-criminal named Riddick.
16:55 The hardened warrior and master of survival barely earns the label antihero.
17:00 When you suddenly find yourself being swarmed by Bioraptors, however,
17:04 there's really no one else you'd rather have around.
17:06 Bioraptors are the apex predators of the barren wasteland that is planet M6117.
17:16 These creatures look like a blend of a hammerhead shark,
17:19 a dragon, and a very twisted imagination.
17:22 With their massive teeth, razor-sharp claws, and prehensile tails,
17:26 they've got multiple ways to take down prey.
17:29 Thankfully, they're sensitive to light.
17:31 But honestly, that's only a small comfort.
17:34 [Screaming]
17:36 Is this movie cheesy? Absolutely.
17:45 But it's also a testament to just how effective practical effects can be
17:49 when it comes to terrifying your audience.
17:50 [Screaming]
17:55 Now, clowns in general tend to freak people out.
17:58 And this was true long before the clown panic of 2016.
18:01 There's just something so inhuman about all that makeup and the outfits.
18:04 In this case, however, the titular clowns from this movie are literally from outer space.
18:09 And that isn't white face paint. It's their skin.
18:12 "What are you gonna do with those pies, boys?"
18:14 Armed with all manner of weaponized clownish accessories,
18:21 these extraterrestrials live to cause mayhem and are hungry for humans.
18:26 Though this movie is a horror comedy,
18:28 the practical effects used to bring the clowns to life are truly grotesque.
18:32 "I don't want to play here anymore. Can we go home now?"
18:39 Number 11. The Pod People.
18:41 Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
18:42 "They're coming! They're coming! Help! Help! They're coming! They're coming! Listen to me!"
18:48 They might not have the most intimidating label,
18:51 but these extraterrestrials make up for it with their world-conquering ways.
18:55 After originating in the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers,
18:58 the Pod People have appeared in a number of film adaptations.
19:01 The scariest ones appear in the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland.
19:05 The film treats us to the sight of this extraterrestrial race in their natural gelatinous
19:12 form and it's pretty weird. What really earns them a place on our list is the way they assume
19:18 the form of humans and take their place. As they spread, the Pod People systematically
19:22 identify the unassimilated in a bid to replace all of humankind.
19:26 That scream? It will haunt you long after the credits roll.
19:30 Number 10. The Gray Aliens.
19:41 Extraterrestrial.
19:42 When a group of friends decides to get together for a party at a cabin in the middle of the woods,
19:47 horror movie 101 dictates that treacherous events await them.
19:50 The group, an extraterrestrial, finds themselves confronting some absolutely
20:00 vicious otherworldly beings that happen to crash land nearby.
20:03 If these aliens weren't menacing enough to begin with,
20:06 killing one of them certainly did not help the friends' chances of survival.
20:10 The sheer brutality that these aliens unleash upon these unfortunate victims is one for the
20:17 record books and makes us second guess the idea of exploring other planets.
20:21 Number 9. The Arachnids.
20:26 The Starship Troopers franchise.
20:29 No, the CGI in this franchise is not the best.
20:31 While the films can feel a bit dated, Starship Troopers achieved something
20:38 that you never really could have using practical effects. A swarm of aliens.
20:47 Honestly, the Arachnids would have snagged a spot on this list simply by virtue of their size and
20:51 numbers. What lands them in the top 10, however, is the fact that they're extremely organized and,
20:57 though they might not look it, remarkably advanced. The Arachnids have seemingly got an equivalent for
21:02 just about every human technology. Their alternatives just happen to be organic.
21:07 And it's this impressive range of abilities that makes these bugs so damn terrifying.
21:12 Oh, and don't even get us started on Brain Bug.
21:15 One day, someone like me is gonna kill you and your whole f*cking race.
21:23 Number 8. The Aliens.
21:27 War of the Worlds.
21:28 This tale of alien invasion is so terrifying that in 1938, just the radio drama was enough to send
21:34 some listeners into a panic. H.G. Wells' iconic story has been adapted a number of times over the
21:39 years. But the aliens made their biggest impact yet in the 2005 adaptation. Directed by Steven
21:51 Spielberg, the 2005 War of the Worlds is truly epic in scale, with extraterrestrials to match.
21:58 Though the invaders were labeled "Martians" in earlier versions of the story, Spielberg
22:02 decided to obscure their origins to help add to their scare factor. Not that they need it.
22:07 But from their creepy design to their massive machines of war and the way they repurpose
22:14 human bodies, these aliens are Earth's worst nightmare.
22:17 Number 7. The Long One.
22:26 Slither. James Gunn strikes again on this list, this time with a race of alien parasites.
22:32 These creepy, slithering, otherworldly creatures have various forms in which to inspire fear.
22:38 In their most rudimentary, slug-like form, these creepy red creatures are fairly vulnerable. But
22:44 when they work together, it's only a matter of time until one of them finds a way into the host.
22:48 The parasite at the heart of this alien race is the most grotesque of all. Known as the Long One,
22:54 it takes possession of a host and quickly causes them to mutate into a mass of tentacles,
23:00 weird growths, and pus. Eventually, the original host becomes all but unrecognizable.
23:09 This is one close encounter we'd rather not have.
23:14 Number 6. It. The It Franchise.
23:16 We bet you didn't expect to see clowns appear again on this list. Or maybe you did. In which
23:28 case, congratulations, you really know your space clowns. This iconic Stephen King creation,
23:39 known simply as It, is best known for taking the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. With its
23:44 vast assortment of abilities and near-limitless power, It has terrified more than one generation
23:49 of moviegoers. But this monster is more than just a shapeshifting clown. An entity that dates back
24:06 millions of years, It came crashing down to Earth either carried by a spatial body or in the form
24:12 of one. Since then, It has plagued the people of Derry and their predecessors, and lives on a diet
24:17 of fear and unlucky victims. Number 5. The Extraterrestrials.
24:30 Fire in the Sky. One would hope that our first contact with aliens will be nothing like this.
24:35 The extraterrestrial beings in Fire in the Sky are somewhat plain-looking and don't appear very
24:44 menacing. But what makes them utterly terrifying is the way they conduct horrific and intensely
24:49 painful experiments, such as the ones Travis Walton goes through. This is exactly the sort
24:54 of abduction that nightmares are made of. Let's hope that if the aliens actually want to study us,
24:59 that it's through more of a face-to-face conversation and not a brutal game of operation.
25:10 Number 4. The Grey Aliens. VHS 2. What starts out as a fun get-together with a group of teenagers
25:17 strapping their camera to their lovable Yorkie, quickly turns into a nightmare in the sequel to VHS.
25:22 The camera captures every terrifying second as the kids are abducted one by one.
25:38 Tricked by flashing lights and sirens, the kids head towards the police,
25:42 but ultimately fall right into the Grey Aliens' trap. We're given one last haunting image of
25:48 them being taken away while their dying dog takes one last breath. And it all leaves us
25:53 speechless, with thoughts of space travel seeming less and less appealing with every passing moment.
26:05 Number 3. Predator. The Predator Franchise.
26:10 Aliens in film often fit into one of two categories. You've got your snarling,
26:19 aggressive, animalistic creatures. And you've got your mysterious, technologically advanced
26:24 abductors. The Predator, or Yautja, however, is cut from a different cloth.
26:34 True to their names, they are master predators who live to hunt. But they do it with super
26:40 advanced technology that puts humans to shame. It's this combination that makes them such a
26:44 formidable force to reckon with. Their code of honor won't stop them from going after their prey.
26:49 The Yautja often use cloaking technology and keep themselves masked. When a predator
26:54 eventually reveals its true face, however, well, it's rather hard to forget.
27:02 Number 2. The Thing. The Thing. John Carpenter did something special with the aliens in They
27:07 Live. But his greatest gift to sci-fi is without a doubt The Thing. And that statement can equally
27:14 apply in reference to the film itself and the titular extraterrestrial. "I know I'm human.
27:19 And if you were all these things, then you'd just attack me right now.
27:26 So some of you are still human." The Thing is a shape-shifting creature that can not only
27:31 emulate other life forms, but also actually assimilate them into its biomass. One moment,
27:36 it's posing as your friend. The next moment, it's mutated that familiar face into something twisted,
27:41 unimaginable, and extremely lethal. Worst of all, it has the ability to live on even
27:47 after being severed into multiple pieces. "Maybe every part of him was a whole.
27:51 Every little piece was an individual animal with a built-in desire to protect its own life."
28:00 Even when you think you've destroyed it, some portion of the extraterrestrial threat

28:24 Number 1. The Xenomorphs - The Alien Franchise
28:27 This extraterrestrial species is so iconic that it's managed to maintain its monopoly on the
28:36 word "alien" for its franchise. It's inspired countless notable imitators like the Faculty
28:40 Alien. But honestly, no other creature comes close. Designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger,
28:52 the Xenomorph is an unholy amalgamation of humanity's biggest fears and anxieties.
28:56 It's serpentine, resembles human anatomy, and is capable of implanting its host with a deadly
29:02 parasite. This primal and predatory species seemingly exists only to cause pain. Although
29:11 these aliens are terrifying in all its forms, the Xenomorph is the purest and most disturbing
29:16 creation found in a Ridley Scott-directed film. Its place in horror history, cinema,
29:21 and our nightmares has been rightfully earned. It doesn't get scarier than the Xenomorph.
29:26 Scary aliens have been a staple of film since its inception. Have any of your favorite aliens
