Public school students from the Macleay Valley gathered to take part in this year's school Reconciliation Week walk. Students, staff, members of the community and Elders walked together on Wednesday, May 29.

00:22 because back then white people didn't care or did anything

00:27 So today is an important day for Aboriginals,
00:31 because we get to share how we are or how we act.
00:34 It's really nice to do this.

00:40 to show white people how it is and how they
00:43 have to deal with back then.

00:57 I think the most important thing is the coming together
01:03 of Guri people and Gubba people, white and black people,
01:10 particularly in this valley where historically relationships
01:15 have not been all that good.
01:18 But things started to change back in the late '60s
01:23 after the referendum and so on.
01:25 But yeah, education-- I'm seeing all these kids
01:31 here today, black and white, or Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
01:35 kids, come together in friendship
01:38 and interacting with one another.
01:41 That's what reconsideration is about, moving together as one,
01:46 not as two separate groups.
01:48 And it's just great to see that.
