Leeds Beckett University Fashion students take over Trinity Leeds with Professor Matty Bovan
Transcript
00:00 We're here doing this live photo shoot in Trinity Leeds.
00:02 This event is really exciting for the students to be able to actually show their work outside of
00:14 uni, especially when it's still kind of work in progress and it's really exciting to put it in
00:18 the public space. We've got people taking pictures, people sitting on the bridge, people asking us
00:22 questions. It's nice to open up that dialogue about where fashion sits in 2024. This is a
00:27 perfect example of a collaborative event today with students across the courses in the university,
00:33 such as fashion marketing, film, as well as external collaborators with our photographer,
00:38 our hair stylist, our makeup artists. So it gives them a real insight into working with a team of
00:44 creatives in a real life, real world situation. And also showing the students how fast these
00:50 processes are. We're shooting a lot of looks in one day as well, so it's really exciting pace,
00:54 the energy is really high. It's definitely special seeing it all together. I think because we spent
01:02 so much time looking at it so close up, it's nice to see it on a person. My collection is all based
01:07 on my mum, she's like my muse for it. So it's based about her journey from going able-bodied
01:12 to a wheelchair and just like the different identities she went through, the different
01:16 emotions. There is slight pressure with other people seeing it, but it kind of makes you feel
01:22 proud that you've been able to make all these clothes yourself. Burberry have supported this
01:29 event today. They're also supporting our runway show in June,
01:33 and they're working with our students as well in the studio.
01:35 I had a really lovely opportunity to go visit the Burberry factory not long ago.
01:47 It showed the different levels of how you can work within the fashion industry. It was really
01:52 interesting. I would have never been able to do something like that if it weren't for
01:55 Leeds Beckett. Also just communications that I've had that lecturers set me up with, just talking,
02:01 getting jobs, even if they don't necessarily go through. It's very interesting to talk to
02:05 bigger brands and see their perspective on things. It's a very, very competitive industry.
02:10 We really try and equip them with something they're really proud of, with strong,
02:13 solid skills, and we do have really good facilities at Leeds Beckett.
02:17 It's wonderful to see how they evolve, and even from the beginning of final year,
02:21 how they've just suddenly started to the lights gone on now, and through the styling workshops
02:26 they've done, through today. This is why today is so important, because they're seeing their
02:30 garments beyond just making pieces, and so it gives it a whole new perspective.
