00:00 "Who can say if I've been changed for the better?"
00:08 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for how we hope
00:13 John M. Chu's stage-to-screen adaptation of Wicked will take the popular musical to the next level,
00:18 while also hitting all the right notes with fans of the original stage show.
00:22 If you haven't seen the musical, expect some spoilers up ahead.
00:25 "So let's start, 'cause you've got an awfully long way to go."
00:32 Number 5. Can Be Improved.
00:34 Remembering that Wicked was a book first.
00:37 If you've read Gregory Maguire's Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,
00:41 you'll know that the show has taken unlimited liberties with its source material.
00:45 "Think of what we could do. Together."
00:47 "Unlimited. Together we're unlimited."
00:56 Some characters were cut, others drastically changed.
00:59 There are all sorts of forgotten storylines and a very different ending.
01:03 Essentially, besides sharing a few names and the whole theme of what makes someone wicked,
01:08 these two versions are as different as Galinda and Elphaba when they first meet.
01:12 "We hear the strange exhilaration, the hidden such toil of investigation,
01:17 hoping it's so pure, so strong."
01:22 Now, the movie has already brought back some characters like Fanny,
01:26 Shenshen, and Averick.
01:27 With it being split into two films,
01:29 maybe there's a chance to dust off some of the book's shelved storylines too.
01:33 "And now whatever way our story's end,
01:39 I know you have rewritten mine."
01:42 Number 5. Should Be Left Alone. The "I'm melting" scene.
01:46 The Wicked Witch of the West's demise in the 1939 The Wizard of Oz is cinematic gold,
01:51 thanks in no small part to Margaret Hamilton's unforgettable performance.
01:55 "Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?
02:00 Ah! Let go! Let go! I'm going!"
02:05 Wicked took a subtler route, using shadows behind a curtain for this iconic moment.
02:10 So how will the new movie handle it?
02:12 We're crossing our fingers for loyalty to the stage show.
02:15 It's a dramatic spectacle, especially when Chistory reveals Elphaba's fate to Galinda.
02:20 "I'll have them chaaaaaange!"
02:30 Remember how you felt the first time you watched the show and found out that the only thing that
02:34 really melted was the shackles of Elphaba's wicked label?
02:37 Wouldn't it be great for moviegoers to share that same experience? We're all in for it.
02:42 "We melted her!"
02:43 "Ah, you liquidated her, eh? Very resourceful."
02:50 Number 4. Can Be Improved. More Exposition.
02:53 The musical primarily focuses on Elphaba and Galinda's time at Shiz University
02:57 and in the Emerald City.
02:59 "Rustle by the library, palace and museum, a hundred strong.
03:04 There are wonders like I've never seen. It's all green, and it's all green!"
03:09 However, if you've read the book, you'll know that there's a lot more Oz to explore.
03:13 The novel's first part delves into Elphie's upbringing in Munchkinland
03:17 and her mother's affair with a quadling.
03:18 "Like a frotty, furty cabbage, the baby is unnaturally...
03:23 ...FREEEEEEEE!"
03:27 Later, she attends Shiz in the Gillican Country, where Galinda hails from.
03:30 Elphaba even ventures to Fiero's home in the Vincus.
03:34 Like our own world, each of these places has its unique culture that influences its inhabitants.
03:39 While we wouldn't want it to overshadow the main storyline,
03:42 it could be interesting to visit these regions and uncover how they shaped our favorite characters.
03:47 "Which road you're going to take and how you do it. You take the higher road,
03:50 you take the road with more risks, you take the road that's safer."
03:52 Number 4. Should Be Left Alone. The B-Plots.
03:56 At its core, Wicked is about two unlikely friends coming together to ask,
04:00 "Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?"
04:04 it poses the same question about goodness.
04:07 However, plenty of other side plots also feed into this greater narrative.
04:11 Take the wizard and Madame Morrible, pulling strings of good and evil,
04:15 while quietly oppressing some of Oz's residents and deceiving the rest.
04:19 "It's one cut crusader, a ruthless invader.
04:23 It's all in which label is able to persist."
04:27 Then there's Dr. Dillamond, who advocates for questioning authority,
04:31 only to be silenced by those in power.
04:33 "Under the surface, behind the scenes, something bad.
04:38 Sorry, bad."
04:43 How about the events shaping Nessaros into the tyrannical Wicked Witch of the East?
04:47 Each of these narratives is vital, adding depth to the show's overarching theme.
04:52 To trim any would be a disservice to the storytelling.
04:55 "It couldn't happen here in Oz."
05:05 Number three, Can Be Improved, Elphaba and the Wizard's Intertwining Stories.
05:10 In both the book and musical, there's this major plot twist revelation.
05:14 The wizard is Elphaba's biological father.
05:16 "Have another drink, my dark-eyed beauty.
05:19 I've got one more night left here in town to have another drink, a green elixir."
05:25 Come on, you cannot drop a bombshell like that and expect everyone to just move on.
05:30 While the wizard learns the truth by the show's finale,
05:32 Elphaba seemingly remains unaware, robbing the moment of its emotional weight.
05:37 Perhaps revealing this earlier could integrate it into the story more smoothly
05:41 and add more layers to their conflict.
05:43 "I never had a family of my own. I was always traveling.
05:48 I guess I just wanted to give the citizens of Oz everything, see?"
05:51 We also need more scenes between Glinda and the wizard.
05:54 She banishes him at the end, but we want to see her journey
05:57 from accepting the title of Glinda the Good to realizing it's one she has to earn.
06:01 "Cause giving your dreams, it's strange but it seems a little, well, complicated."
06:10 Number three, Should Be Left Alone, the climactic Act 1 finale.
06:15 Remember the first time you experienced the sheer magic of defying gravity live?
06:19 That exhilarating moment when Elphaba soars high above the stage?
06:22 "As someone told me lately, everyone deserves a chance to fly!"
06:30 That final note that is probably one of the most recognizable in modern musical theater,
06:34 pure magic.
06:35 [Singing]
06:45 Apparently, Stephen Schwartz feels the same,
06:47 insisting nothing could possibly follow this epic number,
06:50 making it a natural pause for the movie, too.
06:53 So once again, defying gravity will likely bring the curtain down,
06:56 or lights up, on Wicked Part 1.
06:58 [Singing]
07:01 We also hope the movie sticks to the show's overall finale
07:04 instead of creating a new one that falls short.
07:07 But we'll cross that bridge closer to the second part's release in 2025.
07:11 [Singing]
07:17 Number two, Can Be Improved, Costumes and Scenery.
07:21 Films aren't bound by space limitations like stage productions,
07:24 they can build expansive sets and enhance them with mind-blowing special effects.
07:29 "Once you learn to harness your emotions, the sky's the limit."
07:34 We've already glimpsed some spectacular landscapes in the trailer,
07:38 from the magnificent Emerald City to the grandeur of Shiz University.
07:42 Likewise, while the stage outfits are stunning,
07:45 with the camera bringing audiences right up close to the action,
07:48 the costumes can include some more intricate details.
07:50 [Singing]
07:50 "I'll show you what shoes to wear, how to fix that hair,
07:53 everything that really counts to be popular.
07:58 I'll help you be popular."
08:01 We hope the film crew uses these to enrich the story,
08:04 characters, and places we've come to adore from the show.
08:07 "And it all sort of mixes together to sort of blend in different ways, if you will.
08:10 There's a low-lying idea that really sort of gives us a sense of
08:13 water sometimes or mist-covered landscape."
08:19 It's a fine line though.
08:20 We don't want to get too catty,
08:22 but we've seen what happens when these tools aren't used wisely.
08:25 "Here's another trick that went wrong."
08:27 Number 2.
08:28 Should Be Left Alone - The Broadway Magic
08:31 Wicked has held audiences spellbound since its debut,
08:34 and trust us, the fans are hardcore.
08:36 [Singing]
08:36 "Held in such high esteem, when people see me they will scream,
08:42 for half of all's his favorite team!"
08:47 We've been eagerly anticipating its silver screen adaptation for what feels like forever,
08:52 and our expectations are soaring higher than Elphaba defying gravity.
08:55 After seeing what Jon M. Chu did with In the Heights,
08:58 we're feeling pretty good about him bringing that same magic to Wicked.
09:01 "He's forming an artistic opinion."
09:04 Plus, with a cast that blends Broadway veterans and Hollywood icons,
09:08 well, let's just say we're cautiously hopeful.
09:10 Wicked is a phenomenon for a reason.
09:13 While the magic of film has its perks,
09:15 we hope they remember the fans who've been there practically from the first time
09:19 the orchestra started playing the overture.
09:21 "The first notes of the show with the orchestra go like…"
09:24 [Orchestra playing]
09:33 Number 1. Can be improved.
09:36 The supporting cast's backstories.
09:38 While we're intrigued by the introduction of new characters,
09:41 we hope it doesn't overshadow much-needed development for existing ones.
09:45 "You're great."
09:46 "I am."
09:48 [Singing]
09:48 "Something is not the same."
09:51 Take Madame Morrible, for example.
09:53 How did she climb to power as Shiz's headmistress?
09:56 What led to her alliance with the wizard?
09:58 Where does she learn the kind of magic that can carry a tornado across worlds?
10:01 In the books, Bach plays a bigger role than just one-third of an unrequited love triangle,
10:06 while Fiyero is married and has children.
10:08 "Dancing through life, no need to tough it, when you can slough it off as I do."
10:16 Then there's Nessarose.
10:18 What was her childhood with Elphaba like?
10:20 How did her struggles shape her reign over Munchkinland?
10:23 Two feature-length movies offer ample time for these stories to unfold
10:27 without losing sight of the main plot.
10:29 "We're telling this story, we're asking people to go on this journey."
10:32 "I think it's bigger than us, no."

10:50 Number 1. Should Be Left Alone.
10:52 The score. Movie musicals often tinker with the show's score,
10:56 sometimes more than they should.
10:58 "Those who don't try never look foolish."
11:01 Pacing adjustments, like Chew's in In the Heights, may be justified,
11:05 but straight-up cutting songs? That's a whole different story.
11:09 Schwartz's Tony-nominated soundtrack is basically the heart and soul of the show,
11:13 adding layers to the narrative that mere dialogue can't capture.
11:16 "Don't dream too far. Don't lose sight of who you are."
11:26 Don't even get us started on rearranging songs to cater to non-musical fans.
11:31 *ahem* mean girls.
11:33 Schwartz is penning new numbers that will likely be great additions,
11:36 but shouldn't replace any beloved tunes.
11:38 "No good deed goes unpunished.
11:42 Sure I meant well, well look at what well meant steeeeeeed."
11:47 Any tweaks made here won't necessarily result in the movie adaptation being
11:51 changed for the better.
11:52 The soundtrack should remain untouched for good.
11:55 "Who can say if I've been changed for the better?"
12:04 What are you hoping to see in the upcoming Wicked movie?
12:06 Let us know in the comments.
12:08 "My future is unlimited. And I just had a vision almost like a prophecy."
