Trump criminal conviction makes history

Donald Trump on May 30, 2024 became the first former US president ever convicted of felony crimes after a New York jury found him guilty on all charges in his hush money case, months before an election that could see him yet return to the White House. Trump sat stone-faced while the verdict was read as cheering from the street below could be heard in the hallway on the courthouse's 15th floor where the decision was revealed after more than nine hours of deliberations. But a defian Trump said that the "real verdict" would be on November 5 "by the people."

00:00Mr. Trump, what do you have to say to the American people?
00:07Mr. Trump, how does it feel to be convicted of violence?
00:12Are you worried about coming to jail?
00:16I'm a very innocent man, and it's okay. I'm fighting for our country. I'm fighting for our Constitution.
00:23Our whole country is being rigged right now.
00:26This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent.
00:34And I think it's just a disgrace. And we'll keep fighting. We'll fight till the end, and we'll win.
00:40Guilty! Count 2! Guilty! Count 3! Guilty! Count 28! Guilty! Count 29! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
00:53Held worker for Trump! Held worker for Trump!
00:57I'm thoroughly outraged. The man has always supported gay rights. He's always had my back.
01:03And they convicted an innocent man today.
01:06There's no crime from what I can see. And I think it's going to make him more popular with the American people
01:12because they're seeing how he's been targeted and mistreated.
01:15I'm feeling so happy. A certain portion of my faith in the justice system has been restored.
01:21The fact that this jury came back not with a split verdict, not with guilty on some, not guilty on others,
01:28that it was a hung jury, that he was found guilty on every single one of the 34 charges.
01:34That's a victory for democracy.
01:36I'm just really glad that they found him guilty and that justice is being served and Trump is being held accountable.
01:51Obviously, nothing like this has ever happened before.
01:55So we can't lean on the weight of history to understand what the political ramifications of something like this might be.
02:03But I think we know a couple of things.
02:05The first is that the 2024 election was going to be very close.
02:10What that means is that nearly anything could be pivotal, could change just enough votes to make a difference in the outcome.
02:18And something like this, these 34 convictions, this could be the thing that is pivotal in this election that we think is going to be extremely close.
