00:02 Sheep may soon graze under solar panels
00:05 in one of Wyoming's first agrivoltaic projects.
00:09 Agrivoltaics is using land for both agriculture
00:12 and high-tech solar.
00:13 Bright Knight Energy Company proposed installing
00:16 more than one million solar panels,
00:18 a battery storage facility, and transmission lines
00:20 on almost 5,000 acres of private land.
00:23 The sun-tracking panels will be built
00:25 several feet off the ground,
00:27 leaving enough room for the rancher's sheep
00:29 to continue grazing beneath,
00:31 and can enhance grazing conditions,
00:33 since the shade provided by the panels
00:36 helps prevent heat stress in plants.
00:38 And for the sheep, this could make solar projects
00:41 more land-efficient and more acceptable
00:43 in states with significant ranching activities.
00:46 One study found that sheep grazing by solar panels
00:48 resulted in 38% less vegetation,
00:51 but the quality of available plants increased,
00:54 offsetting the reduction.
00:56 Even with less food available for grazing,
00:58 the sheep gained the same amount of weight.
01:00 And as a bonus, the sheep preferred grazing
01:02 in the shaded areas over areas not covered by solar panels.
