00:02 An invasive plant caused quite a stink at a national park in Arizona.
00:07 Staffers at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument recently announced
00:11 they had to temporarily close their picnic area
00:15 because of the presence of a harmful weed called the globe chamomile.
00:19 The plant is also called stink net, and if you haven't smelled it,
00:23 those of you who have say it smells like turpentine when it's crushed.
00:28 It can even cause breathing problems or allergic reactions.
00:31 Plant experts at the University of Arizona say the invasive species is native to South Africa
00:36 and has spread across desert states since the late 1990s.
00:40 Arizona State Parks and Trails warns the plant, with its bright yellow blossoms and narrow green stems,
00:46 can displace native vegetation, change local ecosystems,
00:50 and become a wildfire hazard during the summer months.
00:53 Monument officials say a team is working on a solution that will get that picnic area reopened as soon as possible,
00:59 but they said it might take until May.
