00:00 "Tut, tut.
00:02 Hardly any of you remember that my favorite color is lilac."
00:05 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best Harry Potter scenes
00:10 that were ultimately left out of the final product, for better or for worse.
00:14 But probably for worse.
00:16 "Do you hear from the others much?
00:18 From the Order?"
00:19 "The Order's finished."
00:23 Number 30.
00:24 Hagrid on the Underground - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
00:27 In the movie, we cut straight from Hagrid rescuing Harry to the streets of Diagon Alley.
00:32 In the book, however, we actually get to see how they get there - the Muggle way.
00:37 It's a cute scene that also includes a great setup for Norbert "Uz" introduction later
00:42 on.
00:43 "Norbert.
00:44 Hey."
00:45 "Ooo!"
00:46 While the dragon doesn't play as big a role in the movie since the whole Astronomy Tower
00:51 scene was cut, we do still get to meet the creature, so this would have been some nice
00:56 foreshadowing.
00:57 "I love a dragon."
00:58 "You'd like a dragon?"
00:59 "Fastly misunderstood beasts, Harry.
01:00 Fastly misunderstood."
01:01 More than anything, though, it's just super funny to see a half-giant riding the Muggle
01:08 tube.
01:15 Number 29.
01:16 Hunting - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
01:26 In the seventh book, a lot of emphasis is put on just how miserable things get for the
01:30 Horcrux hunting trio, especially when food runs low.
01:34 While we do see a lot of their struggle in the movie, this scene would have been a nice
01:37 addition to flesh out the emotional state of both boys.
01:40 There's a sense of competition between them.
01:42 Like, it's more than just about getting the rabbit.
01:45 It's about who gets the rabbit.
01:50 The hunt quickly turns into aiming at each other, and it at first seems like a good tussle
01:54 will be all they need to blow off some steam.
01:56 But when Ron actually manages to land a hit on Harry, the tension is back to a maximum.
02:08 Number 28.
02:09 Filch's Letter - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
02:21 If you've never read the books, you'd have no idea what a squib is since the movies never
02:25 mention them.
02:26 It can be inferred, based on what Aunt Petunia says about her sister, that some children
02:31 born to wizards don't develop their ability to perform magic.
02:44 In the Chamber of Secrets, it's revealed that Filch falls into this category when Harry
02:48 finds his quick spell letter, a part of a correspondence teaching beginner magic.
03:04 This gives some extra dimension to the caretaker's character, as he clearly wishes he could perform
03:09 magic.
03:10 It's neat that the movies at least had the intention to include this detail.
03:14 Number 27.
03:15 Dudley's Smeltings Uniform - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
03:20 Yet another scene pulled from the books, this one features Dudley in his brand new school
03:24 uniform.
03:25 It's every bit as embarrassing as described on the page.
03:38 Beyond being book accurate, it also lets us spend a little more time at home with young
03:43 Harry and see exactly the kind of dynamic he's forced to endure every day.
04:01 We also would have loved to see the bit where Aunt Petunia finds Harry's letters in the
04:05 eggs.
04:06 It helps emphasize the relentless persistence of the wizarding school, not to mention how
04:10 brilliant Fiona Shaw's acting is.
04:19 Number 26.
04:20 Neville Defends Harry - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
04:23 Neville has always been the GOAT, and this deleted line is yet another example.
04:28 When Harry returns for his fifth year at Hogwarts, he doesn't have quite the support he'd hoped
04:32 for, no thanks to the stories run about him in the Daily Prophet.
04:35 Still, there are some on his side, though you wouldn't know it from the film's version
04:39 of the altercation between Seamus and Harry.
04:52 In the book, it happens in front of Dean, Neville, and Ron, the latter two of whom come
04:56 to Harry's defense.
04:58 In the movie, the whole common room is witness to the quarrel, and no one, not even Fred
05:02 or George, defends Harry.
05:14 This cut line from Neville, however, makes it clear he was always on the chosen one's
05:18 side.
05:29 Number 25.
05:30 Ron Talks to Harry - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
05:34 "Ron?"
05:35 "I'll be right back."
05:37 Given how many of Ron's qualities and big moments were sacrificed in the movies, we'd
05:41 have loved to see this small moment.
05:43 When Harry's feeling down at Christmas, Ron breaks away from the rest of the table and
05:46 tries to cheer him up with offers of chess or visiting Hagrid.
05:50 "Wanna play chess?"
05:53 "No."
05:54 "We're gonna visit Hagrid."
05:57 "No."
06:00 It's a small gesture, but one that shows Ron is paying attention, especially when he
06:06 advises Harry not to go back to the Mirror of Erised.
06:09 "Harry, I know what you're thinking, but don't.
06:13 There's something not right about that mirror."
06:20 Everything about this exchange, from the subtlety of the acting to the music reinforcing the
06:24 emotion, should have warranted making it into the finished film.
06:28 Number 24.
06:29 Holding Hands - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
06:36 We all know how the films butchered Harry and Ginny's relationship.
06:41 "Sheila's."
06:43 Well, it turns out they also removed what could have been a small redeeming moment.
06:50 There's a lot of power in silence, as it employs the show-don't-tell method, and this scene
06:55 does exactly that.
06:56 During the rigid marching of the Hogwarts students, Harry steps out of line to fall
07:00 into step with Ginny, intertwining his hand with hers in the process.
07:04 It really is so in line with his character to risk getting caught just to potentially
07:08 provide her some comfort and find some strength of his own in her.
07:14 Seriously, was it really worth sacrificing this to save 30 seconds?
07:21 Number 23.
07:22 Borgin and Burkes - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
07:25 This is yet another setup that had major payoff in the end.
07:29 When Harry accidentally ends up in Nocturne Alley, he hides in a cabinet inside of Borgin
07:34 and Burkes.
07:40 Lucius and Draco walk in soon after, and we get to hear about how the perception of pure
07:44 blood status is changing, as well as the suspicions the Malfoys are under.
08:01 Most interestingly, however, is Harry's hiding place.
08:04 It's the very vanishing cabinet the Death Eaters would later use to get into Hogwarts.
08:09 This was an awesome reveal in the books, and it would have been great to see it on screen
08:14 too.
08:23 Number 22.
08:25 Seeing Double - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
08:28 While the movies are often criticized for leaving things out, they also changed and
08:32 added things for the better.
08:42 This incident would have been one.
08:50 After Harry and Ron's polyjuice potion begins to wear off, they run smack into the real
08:54 Crabbe and Goyle in a scene that is so perfectly emblematic of the franchise's signature humor.
09:06 It doesn't even necessitate dialogue to be funny, thanks to Crabbe and Goyle's impeccable
09:11 facial expressions.
09:12 We can only imagine the story they recounted to Malfoy when they got back to the common
09:16 room.
09:17 Number 21.
09:18 How Far Umbridge Was Willing to Go - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
09:27 How is it that Voldemort gets the rep of the big bad when Umbridge exists?
09:31 This is a character who makes our skin crawl in nearly every one of her scenes.
09:48 In fact, just when we thought she couldn't possibly come up with any more torturous punishments,
09:52 she proved us wrong.
09:54 During the part of the story where Hermione leads Umbridge into the Dark Forest, we get
09:58 an extended bit of dialogue that suggests Umbridge no longer cares to be creative with
10:02 her torture.
10:13 It's likely that this was deemed just a bit too dark, even for her, but it really brings
10:18 home just how evil she is.
10:20 Number 20.
10:21 Peeves the Poltergeist - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
10:25 As any fans of the Harry Potter books will tell you, one of the larger characters cut
10:29 from the films was Peeves the Poltergeist.
10:31 A mischievous spirit who causes problems for students and faculty alike, Peeves was originally
10:37 intended to appear in at least the first film.
10:43 Actor Rick Mille was actually cast to play the part, but despite at least one scene being
10:48 filmed, the public still hasn't seen it as of 2023.
10:51 The character has only been mentioned in a Harry Potter short film.
11:05 We'll just have to imagine what it would have been like by watching Mille play a similar
11:09 character in the film Drop Dead Fred.
11:17 Number 19.
11:18 Hermione's Wedding Dance - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
11:22 One of the first major events in the first part of Harry Potter's dark final chapter
11:26 is actually a happy occasion.
11:28 The movie spends time depicting Bill Weasley in Fleur Delacour's wedding.
11:32 During the festivities, there's dancing and general merriment.
11:37 However, what we don't see in the finished film is that Hermione's sort-of-ex Victor
11:43 Crumb is at the wedding.
11:45 In a deleted scene, the two reunite and dance together.
11:48 Although the scene itself hasn't been officially released, behind-the-scenes footage and photos
11:53 of the scene can be found.
11:54 It would have been nice to see a reunion between the two play out before Ron and Hermione became
11:59 a couple.
12:08 Number 18.
12:09 Snape and Karkaroff - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
12:12 The Yule Ball is Harry's first big dance, but when he ducks out into a courtyard in
12:17 a deleted scene, he finds that several of his classmates are interested in a lot more
12:21 than dancing.
12:24 After passing several closely-entwined students, Harry hides among the columns as Professor
12:30 Snape and Igor Karkaroff have a heated argument.
12:41 Karkaroff makes references to the dark marks on both their arms becoming clearer.
12:46 However, Snape is more interested in catching some students in flagrante.
12:54 Not only is the scene mostly finished, it also acts as a nice bit of foreshadowing.
13:04 It's a shame this dark and hormone-filled scene was cut from the final edit.
13:09 Number 17.
13:10 Fireside Conspiracy Theories - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
13:14 Dark things abound during Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts - and every other year, for that
13:19 matter.
13:20 But when a ministry official and Triwizard Tournament judge Barty Crouch Sr. turns up
13:24 dead, Harry and his friends speculate about the event in this deleted scene.
13:28 While sitting around the fire, Ron suggests there will be a cover-up because of the adult's
13:33 government position.
13:34 "Nobody liked Crouch.
13:35 I know this from my father.
13:36 Loads of people wanted him dead."
13:40 Meanwhile, Hermione suggests a connection between the strange and grim events of the
13:44 year and Crouch's death.
13:46 Both of them advise that Harry talk to Dumbledore about the murder.
13:49 And honestly, isn't that always the best policy?
13:52 "Surviving the tournament isn't the answer anymore, Harry.
13:55 It's bigger than this.
13:58 And I really think you should go to Dumbledore."
14:01 Number 16.
14:02 Luna Comforts Harry - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
14:06 This deleted scene was set shortly after the main trio, Luna and Griphook, escaped from
14:10 Malfoy Manor.
14:11 The triumphant event was overshadowed by the fact that Dobby died during their rescue.
14:16 "Such a beautiful place to be with friends."
14:24 As Harry sits next to his lost friend's grave, Luna Lovegood approaches him and offers him
14:28 some words of comfort for the late elf.
14:30 "Funny how Mr. Dobby knew exactly where to find us."
14:33 "Yeah.
14:34 That's funny."
14:36 She also indicates she's going to Hogwarts.
14:38 While Harry tries to discourage her, Luna issues the perfect response.
14:42 "It's not the place you left, you know.
14:45 It's not the same."
14:46 "Neither am I."
14:49 This deleted scene also includes a great exposition about a magical mirror,
14:54 plus the scene concludes with more of Hermione in Bellatrix's body.
14:57 "How do I look?"
15:00 "Hideous."
15:02 Despite being a short sequence, there's a lot of little character beats and plot packed
15:06 into this scene.
15:08 Number 15.
15:10 Post-Troll Talk - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
15:13 While Harry and Ron are friends basically from the moment they meet,
15:16 it takes them a little longer to warm up to Hermione.
15:19 After Ron hurts Hermione's feelings, she ends up crying alone in a bathroom,
15:24 the same day a troll is on the loose.
15:27 "Turn around in the dungeon!"
15:30 The sequence where Harry and Ron run to save her from the beast
15:33 is a defining moment of friendship for the three of them.
15:36 However, a deleted scene cements their bond even further.
15:39 A brief scene sees the trio walking down a hall.
15:42 During their stroll, Harry remarks how Ron's partially to blame for Hermione needing saving.
15:47 "Good for you to get us out of trouble like that."
15:49 "Mind you, we did save her life."
15:52 "Mind you, she might not have needed saving if you hadn't insulted her."
15:56 Ron, on the other hand, confirms their friendship verbally.
15:59 "You are Fred's fool."
16:04 It's a small distinction that makes it clear the trio's reached a turning point.
16:09 Number 14.
16:10 Snape meets Harry - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
16:13 Professor Snape's intense dislike for Harry is evident from the moment they meet.
16:18 However, their first meeting originally went a bit differently.
16:22 "Mr. Potter, our new celebrity."
16:29 During his first potions class, Snape demands that Harry answer some complex potion-making
16:34 questions.
16:35 In the theatrical cut, the boy who lived simply says he doesn't know.
16:38 But in a deleted scene, Harry gives a flippant response that suggests Hermione knew the answers.
16:44 "Clearly, Hermione knows.
16:46 Seems a pity not to ask her."
16:48 "Farewell."
16:49 He's definitely not wrong about that.
16:53 However, in response, Snape gets all up in Harry's face.
16:56 "A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons.
17:02 As for monkshood and wolfbane, they are the same plant."
17:05 The professor also rapidly answers his own questions before taking points from Gryffindor.
17:10 "And Gryffindors, note that five points will be taken from your house for your classmate's
17:19 cheek."
17:20 While he claims it's for cheek, we're betting Snape was freaked out that Harry had his mother's
17:24 eyes.
17:26 Number 13.
17:27 Ron Explains the Taboo - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
17:31 Throughout the seventh film, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are repeatedly found by Voldemort's
17:35 forces.
17:36 In a deleted scene set after their escape from the Ministry of Magic, we find out how
17:41 they keep getting discovered.
17:42 "Dumbledore had a theory that the Horcruxes wouldn't be made out of random objects.
17:47 And they wouldn't be hidden randomly, either."
17:50 As Harry and Hermione discuss their mission to find Horcruxes and how each item connects
17:54 to Voldemort, Ron suddenly discourages them from saying the name aloud.
17:58 "It scares me a bit, that.
17:59 Thinking it's a piece of..."
18:00 "No, don't.
18:01 Don't say it."
18:02 He explains that a magical taboo has been placed on Voldemort's name.
18:08 This small detail lets them track whoever is brave, or ignorant enough to speak it aloud.
18:13 "It's taboo, you know whose name.
18:15 That's how they track people now."
18:17 "How do you know that?"
18:19 "I've heard some bloke at the Ministry talking about it."
18:21 While book readers were aware of the taboo, moviegoers likely just thought that the main
18:26 trio had really bad luck.
18:28 "I hate it.
18:29 It's like he's here with us."
18:32 Number 12.
18:33 In Noctem, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
18:36 Set before the tragic events of the Half-Blood Prince finale, this sequence showcases various
18:41 characters witnessing an oncoming storm.
18:43 The tone is set when Professor Flitwick conducts a choir of students as they perform the song
18:48 in Noctem.
18:57 As the singers perform their haunting melody, we're shown how concerned different residents
19:01 of the castle are about future events.
19:04 We get an especially long glimpse of a conflicted Snape's face covered in shadow.
19:08 This scene might have been cut because it was a bit on the nose.
19:11 However, we believe the scene has enough artistic merit to warrant its inclusion in the full
19:16 film.
19:17 "Get back to your houses.
19:18 You're juggling."
19:19 Number 11.
19:21 Dumbledore's Faith in Harry.
19:22 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
19:25 Dumbledore and Harry's trip to a terrifying seaside cave was a memorable one.
19:28 To retrieve what they believe is a Horcrux, the duo had to overcome several traps left
19:33 by Voldemort.
19:35 During their adventure, Dumbledore is severely weakened, but he showcased enough strength
19:39 to hold off an army of enemies.
19:41 "One more, sir.
19:42 One more, and then I promise.
19:44 I promise I'll do what you say."
19:47 In a removed scene, we see the duo exit the cave after the professor's fiery display.
19:52 Dumbledore also leans on Harry and tells him he isn't worried for one precious reason.
19:56 "It's alright, sir.
19:58 Don't worry.
19:59 I'm nearly there."
20:00 "I'm not worried, Harry.
20:01 I'm with you."
20:04 Since the Headmaster's time in the franchise was coming to an end, would it have killed
20:08 the filmmakers to include this scene?
20:10 Then again, maybe they left it out to spare our feelings.
20:14 10.
20:15 Sir Cadagan – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
20:30 We all know that there are paintings that talk and move at Hogwarts, like Gryffindor
20:34 Tower's Fat Lady, but one of these characters was tragically left on the cutting room floor
20:39 despite the levity that he brings to the Prisoner of Azkaban book.
20:51 Sir Cadagan is a valiant knight who replaces the Fat Lady as the guardian of Gryffindor
20:55 common room and unfortunately decides to let Sirius Black in because he has the passwords.
21:10 His daft demeanor and obliviousness would have been a bright point in a movie that's
21:14 filled with darkness.
21:15 Plus, this scene also lets us see McGonagall lecture Neville in her PJs.
21:23 9.
21:26 Sybil Trelawney listening to Dolores Umbridge's speech – Harry Potter and the Order of the
21:30 Phoenix
21:37 In the Order of the Phoenix, it's an understatement to say that Professor Trelawney and Professor
21:42 Umbridge do not get along.
21:44 For instance, in the book, Umbridge terrorizes the seer when the Hogwarts High Inquisitor
21:49 audits one of her classes.
21:50 While this scene was filmed, it didn't make the theatrical cut.
22:01 But the focus of this entry is another instance.
22:03 While Umbridge's treatment of the divination teacher is upsetting, there's a deleted
22:07 scene that lets us see Trelawney's reaction to her welcome speech before things start
22:11 to go downhill.
22:19 Trelawney eats and drinks, and shows how clearly unimpressed she is with the thinly-veiled
22:24 propaganda that Umbridge is trying to spread.
22:32 8.
22:35 Leg Locker Curse – Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
22:48 In the first movie, we get plenty of iconic scenes of Hermione badgering Harry and Ron
22:52 to study and follow the rules.
23:03 In this scene set in the Great Hall, she lectures them about how they should be studying for
23:07 their exams rather than playing with cards.
23:10 When Neville hops in having suffered from a leg locker curse, in a moment of foreshadowing,
23:15 Ron tells him he needs to learn to stand up for himself.
23:18 Also, interestingly, this scene shows Harry finding a mention of Nicolas Flamel on a card,
23:29 like he does in the book, rather than in a book, which is what made it into the final
23:34 cut.
23:41 7.
23:45 Is Harry the Heir?
23:47 – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
23:59 The ambiance in the book version of the Chamber of Secrets is a dark one, with Harry feeling
24:03 isolated from his peers because they believe he's the one opening the Chamber of Secrets.
24:08 While some of this comes across in the film, this deleted scene lets us in on what the
24:12 other students are saying about Harry when they think he can't hear them.
24:26 They even speculate that Voldemort knew that Harry had darkness in him, and that's why
24:30 he tried to kill him in the first place.
24:38 6.
24:39 You Need Us, Harry – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
24:48 Fans of the books will remember that at the end of the Half-Blood Prince, Harry announces
24:52 that he will not be going back to Hogwarts for his seventh and final year of schooling,
24:56 but will rather go hunting for Voldemort's Horcruxes.
25:06 While he initially proposes this plan as though he's going to go alone, Ron and Hermione
25:10 are having none of it, and assure him that they'll go with him.
25:23 In this deleted scene, we see Hermione telling Harry that he needs them, and Harry responding
25:28 cheekily that the two of them will have to keep their burgeoning romance under wraps
25:32 while they're trying to save the world.
25:44 5.
25:47 Ron Trying to Express His Feelings – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
25:51 Many fans were disappointed that Ron and Hermione's first kiss was completely different
25:55 in the movies than it was in the books.
26:01 In the books, Hermione finally goes for it after Ron expresses concern about the Hogwarts
26:06 house elves.
26:07 But, since SPEW isn't in the movies, they went in another direction.
26:12 Viewers can take solace in this scene that didn't make the cut, though.
26:15 In it, Ron and Hermione are running from Nagini during the Battle of Hogwarts, and Ron tries
26:20 to use the moment of peril to tell Hermione something, but she insists that he wait for
26:24 when they're not being chased by a giant snake.
26:35 Another sweet Rominey scene deleted from Part 1 of Deadly Hallows is one where they're
26:40 skipping rocks together.
26:43 4.
26:47 Harry Grieving Sirius Black – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
26:50 For many Potter fans, Sirius Black's death in the Order of the Phoenix was one of the
26:54 most shocking and devastating things that J.K.
26:57 Rowling ever wrote.
26:58 But in the movie, the producers were clearly short on time by the end of the action, and
27:02 didn't leave much room for us to see Harry grieving his godfather.
27:06 This scene is a simple and quiet one, but it shows Ron checking in on Harry and asking
27:10 if he wants to come to the feast as he's packing his things.
27:27 Harry isn't up for it, and when Ron sees Hermione in the common room, he gives her
27:31 a look that says it all when it comes to how his friend is faring.
27:38 3.
27:41 Draco Malfoy Throwing Harry His Wand – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
27:52 This one may come as a bit of a shock, because if you've only seen the movies, this will
27:56 change your opinion of Draco Malfoy forever.
27:59 After Voldemort thinks he's killed Harry and brings his body to show the Order and
28:03 the students of Hogwarts, he's shocked when Harry actually leaps up alive.
28:11 In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, though, which is markedly different from the final
28:15 cut of the film, Malfoy shows his true colors when he runs forward and throws Harry his
28:20 wand.
28:21 Though it could be considered out of character, it might have been interesting to see a glimmer
28:29 of redemption for the young Malfoy.

28:33 The Dursleys Departure – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
28:47 Look we get it, there was a lot going on in the Deathly Hallows and they couldn't possibly
28:52 fit everything into the movie.
28:53 But they did split the story into two full-length films, so we're still a bit peeved that
28:58 this was cut.
28:59 In this scene, we see Harry saying goodbye to the Dursleys, and it gives us much more
29:02 insight into both Petunia and Dudley's characters.
29:05 Petunia reveals what she suffered when Harry's mother was killed by Voldemort, giving us
29:10 a glimpse at her humanity and feelings.
29:20 But perhaps even more notable is Dudley taking the time to say goodbye to Harry, and letting
29:25 him know that he doesn't think he's a waste of space.

29:54 #1 Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks' Reunion - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part
30:00 2
30:02 J.K. Rowling broke all of our hearts when she killed both Lupin and Tonks during the
30:08 Battle of Hogwarts.
30:09 It was a blow we were unprepared for, and we could barely read through our tears when
30:14 it was revealed.
30:15 In the movie, there's so much going on that we don't have much time to process their
30:19 demise.
30:20 "And Remus, he your son?"
30:21 "Others will tell him what his mother and father died for."
30:25 If this scene had made the final cut, the entire thing only would have been more devastating.
30:30 As we see Tonks run to Lupin and hear him tell her she should have stayed home with
30:33 their son.
30:34 Seeing this tender moment is almost too much for us to bear.
30:37 "You shouldn't have!"
30:39 "It's Teddy who needs you."
30:41 "He'll sleep till dawn and snore like his father."
30:43 "It's you that needs me tonight."
30:47 Which scene do you wish had been kept in?
30:49 Let us know in the comments.
30:50 "I don't appreciate the insinuation, Lone Bum.
30:51 Besides, if anyone cares to notice, my eyebrows have completely grown back."
