The Tories have announced a pledge to give 30 towns £20 million, a plan that Labour has described as a “reckless, unfunded” commitment. The Conservatives have announced they would add the towns to their long-term plan for towns, taking the total number of towns in the programme to more than 100, and local people in each area will decide how the money will be used for long-term regeneration. 00:00 We're building on the very successful Towns Fund. That's schemes whereby we give an endowment-style
00:07 grant, £20 million to Towns, administered and decided where they spend it by the Towns
00:14 themselves, a collection of civic leaders and local businesses, you know, putting pride back
00:19 in their towns, regenerating the town centre, helping safety and security, all of those things
00:25 that make our towns wonderful places to live or breathes life back into them. It's building on
00:32 an existing scheme, so about 75 towns are benefiting already. What we've announced today are another
00:37 30 towns up and down the country. It's not just about the north, it's towns like Canock in the
00:43 West Midlands, Corby in the East Midlands, but then Camborne down south in Cornwall,
00:48 Bognor Regis down here, just down the road from me actually in West Sussex,
00:53 and towns in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. So all across the country, building on the success
00:59 of an existing scheme, bringing back pride in our towns. This is part of our plan, our offer,
01:06 being on the side of people who aspire to climb up ladders of opportunity in life.
01:11 You know, I would contrast this with, you know, Labour's uncertain plans. We just don't know what
01:17 they stand for, what they'd actually do and what the potential cost in terms of taxes might be.
