00:00...of a way of playing football that has enthralled the world and suddenly now
00:06this young Ajax side are beginning to shape like worthy successors entertaining
00:13and excelling this season Ajax unbeaten in 24 now what a run that is too strong
00:21for the rest in Holland but it is 18 years since they defeated any Italian
00:28club here in Amsterdam and how Roma need that run to continue tonight
00:39Juventus both Milan clubs Fiorentina all got positive results in recent years and
00:46this season of course Atalanta won here 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League a
00:52decisive night that was I mean no disrespect to the current crop of
00:59players but in the backdrop there a man who set the eternal standard and in
01:05whose great honor this stadium is now named Edwin van der Sar leading a new
01:09executive team here these days at Ajax they really appear to have got their mojo
01:14back in every department of this great club
01:22so Ajax seeking to build on everything that they have been achieving in the
01:43Eredivisie they're in the cup final in Holland again this season as well and if
01:49for now the UEFA Champions League was just a step a little bit too far too
01:54soon who knows how strong a contender they could prove to be in this
01:57competition over the next few weeks Roma under new ownership this season of course
02:07playing perhaps not so much for the pride of Italy tonight the last Italian
02:12club in Europe this season remember more so though for their personal futures
02:16reportedly the new hierarchy at Roma reviewing every aspect of the operation
02:22trying to find a route to restore Roma to a place at the top of the game in
02:28Italy
03:17to the outside world perhaps without a problem at the moment but in fact he's
03:21been having to manage a couple of very difficult issues one the goalkeeping
03:26issue there is no Dali blint incidentally but on the goalkeeper front
03:29Andrea Nana serving a long-term ban these days Martin Steklenberg his
03:33replacement for a few weeks was injured in the warm-up at the weekend shell
03:37Sheppan made his full-league debut here in vain and starts in Europe now for the
03:42first time in true Ajax tradition three teenagers tonight plus Davi Klaasen
03:47flourishing in his second spell here and Dusan Tadic who came in three years ago
03:51with so many talents going the other way and he's just kept going quite
03:55wonderfully also captaining tonight for the home side Sergei Karashev of Russia
04:04is the referee
04:12and this the Roma lineup Rick Carlsdorp the resident Dutchman is suspended
04:17sadly for him tonight Chris Smalling and Marash Kambala ruled out by injury so
04:21too Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Steven El Sherawi Jordan Veretout who's got ten
04:26this season and the ageless Edin Dzeko both passed fit tonight Pedro also
04:32starts although after a very bright start to his Roma career he has scored
04:36only once in 2021 could this be the night to show all his undoubted
04:42pedigree and that is also the case for Dzeko he's got three in this
04:48competition this season continuing a marvelous marvelous career Dzeko at the
04:53age of 35 kept in reserve by Paulo Fonseca for the visitors at least
05:00starting tonight Borja Mayoral
05:07so they've thrilled us in the European arena more than once in recent years
05:15Ajax seeking to do it again over the next few weeks
05:22Roman need this so badly though and need to stay in it to bring it back to Italy
05:28with hope of making a European semi-final and moving a heap of pressure
05:34off the shoulders of Paulo Fonseca
05:47he reliant on this European campaign in so many ways Fonseca has beaten two of
05:53his former clubs Braga and Shakhtar along the road this season but he needs
05:58the road to continue how Ajax have thrilled us in recent years with the
06:06youthful brave players keen to honour the memory of the man the great whose
06:13name now adorns this wonderful arena and a very youthful look to some areas of
06:19the side tonight particularly Jermain down there right side they've got
06:22Devine Rinsch and Jürgen Timber and this young man in goal what are your
06:26thoughts on all that you know what in all honesty I think it's it's the nature
06:32of the football club they've over the years produced some of the the best
06:37footballers we've ever seen you know when you go back as far as you know the
06:40Clivert team with with Edgar Davids in that team as well Clarence Seedorf and
06:46you know this is just kind of a number of players on that conveyor belt and I
06:50think the way they do it is brilliant and you know the way that they get them
06:53to this type of position in the competition is because they're good
06:56players so the manager obviously trust them which is why they're all out
06:59there tonight Darby Clarsen back for Ajax this season
07:03obviously not in their traditional strip tonight we should point that out as well
07:06but Clarsen he knows the routine he knows the tradition here after a really
07:12fantastic season in the Bundesliga where he single-handedly in my view kept Werder
07:16Bremen in the top flight in Germany now he's back at this club he loves and he
07:21gets on the ball here now front three of Neres, Tadic and Antony two Brazilians
07:29either side of the very skillful Serb Tadic
07:37Paulo Lopez is the visiting goalkeeper tonight briefly once of Tottenham wasn't
07:41he a few years ago and then he went to Real Betis yeah he didn't really kind of
07:45get much time but he obviously has got real quality and he's finding himself
07:49a top European football club Gravenberg is the runner from midfield
07:56Taliafico he's been around a few years and a link really for some of the
08:00younger players with the last of those thrilling Ajax sides some of us go back
08:06to the 1970s Jermaine, you're on your own there, you're laughing
08:13everything I've picked up from my spies in Rome says that they'll be very keen
08:21to be solid and hard to break down and get Dzeko in the game early up front if
08:26possible Pellegrini joining in from midfield and that I think is going to be
08:31the game plan tonight everything about that move was absolutely brilliant the
08:35ball from midfield out wide to Dzeko and he was positive with his ball I think
08:39the only thing that was missing was was Pellegrini getting on the end of it he
08:44made a good run the ball maybe was just playing a little bit too hard but good
08:47signs that you know Roma are gonna know whether they play more defensively or
08:53not they've still got real quality up there that can hurt teams
08:5951 points on the board in Syria ah Inter have moved one step closer to the Syria
09:05title of course yesterday I think Tanavi never admit it but he knows that the
09:11title in Holland is theirs now they have 69 from 27 here in Holland Ajax they've
09:17scored 85 league goals this season so far
09:22next in line a PSV with 58 points just two league defeats and a long time since
09:30either of those
09:36some performance by Atalanta to win here Jermain just before Christmas anyway
09:41here come Ajax Gravenberg on the edge of the box slightly mishit it didn't get
09:48everything he wanted on that Paulo Pez comfortable yeah it's really good play
09:53though on this right-hand side for Anthony little stop start and finds
09:57himself in behind the Roma left-back but I suppose the shotless didn't quite
10:04have enough purchase on it but it's a good start from both sides yes it is I
10:09had high hopes for this game I must say Gravenberg a new addition for the
10:13Holland national squad Czechos still going strong for his country as well of
10:19course and the very versatile Alvarez he's just sitting in front of the two
10:29centre-backs to start tonight for Ajax the centre-backs being Timber and
10:35Martinez this is Jürgen Timber
10:42little dart in behind by Tadic
10:53Pedro
10:57long long while between goals for Pedro
11:10and 33 but will be 34 in the summer I always watched him at Chelsea even
11:16Jermaine and thought you know you really do keep yourself in amazing condition so
11:20who knows he may wish to continue longer I think the thing that everybody thinks
11:24about Pedro is his game is about speed and sharpness but he still has that
11:30number one and also he's a very intelligent footballer
11:36class and making lots of moves forward supporting the play and in behind him is
11:42Alvarez flag has gone out far side we do have the AR here incidentally it's an
11:51all-russian team tonight 11 million spent on bringing class and back to I
11:58axe as I'm sure everybody is aware Jermaine the torrents of cash that have
12:04poured in here over the last few years for the hugely talented products from
12:09this I axe system hundreds of millions of euro yeah but again like I said that's
12:15their model and if anything you know I think if you look at probably that in
12:19particular the transfer is here it's probably very cheap in today's market
12:24what he went for David Neres do what I matched him
12:50not usually ignored Tadic when he goes out there for a short corner routine
12:55might just be a touch-and-hit here it is
13:00Roma were well prepared for that actually weren't they I think it was a
13:04bad ball you know I think he's obviously trying to create a better angle for him
13:08to whip this Tadic but that's a better one doesn't normally need too many
13:13chances to get his eye in
13:19the vein wrench just 18 only a full debut for him in January and in fact he
13:27and timber really both making the big breakthrough this season
13:39I'll tell you another good I axe parlor game is just actually making up a list
13:43of all the outstanding right fullbacks over the decades we've been discussing
13:50gentle introduction to European football for Schepin the new boy in gold tonight
13:56Andre on Anna ruled out for 12 months with a UEFA suspension on come I axe
14:04with Tadic left foot back post Neres was coming on to it
14:12Bruno Perez comes away with it Perez in his second spell at Roma now
14:19Roma reach the round of 16 in this competition last season and actually
14:33turned into a one-legged meeting with Sevilla as the European season got going
14:39again that was played in Duisburg in early August that's the point at which
14:45they went out to this competition
14:49Gothenburg Tadic
14:54my virus was out jumped how's that for confidence and you'd be proud of that
15:00that was very nice funny I mean they've started confidently this ix team you're
15:06knocking it around with with freedom the team that's been winning so many games
15:11to be honest with you as they have but you can just tell their patterns of
15:15play are are very good you know Alvarez gets in that pocket of space that is in
15:19now there's always options on the ball
15:25Oh
15:39that was flying right the way down the tunnel here that one from Cris Dante
15:46yeah not bad that from a center off is it
15:50Lissando Martinez
16:03here's Pedro
16:06Jordan better to pick that deal water now Bruno Perez Tony Fico was up to him
16:16but he didn't really close him down and they've continued the move here Roma now
16:19it's Jekyll and again nicely thought out here by Roma
16:26it's got be a corner I think I could hear the touch from the keeper
16:33interesting to see again good bit of play from heading Jekyll little one two
16:37there's not much on so he thinks I'll just take a little shot I'm convinced to
16:42keep it gets a little touch there chirping fingertips you could hear it
16:50the run in the UEFA Champions League this season for Ajax got off on the
17:05wrong foot really the defeat here by Liverpool got a draw in Italy against
17:10Atalanta Mitterland home and away two wins to get them in the hunt then
17:14another defeat to Liverpool and the decisive night the win here for Atalanta
17:21nothing in that
17:28notice keeps hustling and harrying
17:35Spinazzola took no risk with it Spinazzola one of the Italian
17:40internationals in this Roma lineup tonight
17:57Alvarez
18:00Talic just about stayed on side Clarsen again joins in from deep but how are
18:13they defending this at the moment Roma in your view Jermain well they're doing
18:17okay at the minute but I feel like they're asking for trouble to be honest
18:21with you they're playing very deep there's an earlier chance where they
18:23couldn't quite get it on under control their narrows but they've just got a lot
18:27of numbers very deep and a bit too deep at times and I think with the with the
18:31runners the Ajax have and how flat that line is with with Roma and it's not just
18:37that it's flat it's just quite it's like stagnated they're not dropping quick
18:42enough and stuff so I think you know constant runs in but up behind we'll
18:46catch them let's see what they can do going the other way and the defender
18:51here is wrench and he didn't do a very good job and check out surely was
18:55favorite there he knows look I think he's just backed off a lot towards the
19:02back post and he's just dropped before him and he's had to climb all over he
19:09gets Martinez there and yeah it's a brilliant ball really wasn't spinning
19:14Zola
19:17looking forward to watching him tonight the man down the left for Roma 29
19:22million Roma paid for him a couple of years ago
19:31carbon bear do you want to front him up short to net s I think it's more
19:40laudable the progress Ajax have made on this long long run Jermaine or none of
19:45the goalkeeper problem yeah now Steklenberg who knows his way around
19:49obviously out Darley Blint whose quality speaks for itself not involved
19:55here goes graven bear just ran away from him
19:57Bruno Perez covering round those are the runs I'm talking about if you run from
20:01deep they don't seem to be quite very responsive that defensive line they're
20:05very just flat and square and susceptible to this a quick run like
20:10that and a good ball maybe the magic word there is confidence if they're on a
20:15very good run they might believe in what they're trying to do a bit more but it
20:18just leads one to believe that there's always that little nagging doubt in
20:22their mind yeah
20:28we've got one out and out front man who had the glimmer of a chance or two
20:32already tonight and in Jekyll for Roma but some of our viewers may be asking
20:38what has happened to Sebastian Haller who's arrived from West Ham of course
20:43midseason he's not going to be involved in the European Games because of what
20:48was politely termed an administrative error shocker he's all that was Tadic
20:58the thing about him is you may need be a great variety of option wouldn't a
21:03different kind of player it's very difficult I think for you know I think a
21:11lot of viewers especially in England to kind of you know draw their opinions on
21:16in comparison to Ed and Jekyll and say he's a better variety or a different
21:21variety they're very similar players in terms of stature and size and almost the
21:25way they play but you know my opinion Ed and Jekyll is a much better player but I
21:28know from people I spoke to the reason that Ali had got the move in the first
21:32place was because of how how good he was prior to his move to West Ham which is
21:36why Roma have took a chance on him as well
21:40Spinatola, Dzeko in there Perez following up Ravenbeek just got a toe to it not far
21:52clear that is a sharp piece of work by Schafer but it came at a good height but
21:58it was worth the effort and Cristante believed in it and tested the young
22:02goalkeeper yeah it's a great strike you have to say Roma look dangerous from
22:05crosses you know I think Martinez is doing really well dealing with not only
22:08that cross but a couple of chances that should have fell to Ed and Dzeko that's a
22:13top save what a strike that is from Crisante cuts across it beautifully it's
22:17going right in the corner it's a full stretch to keep up deals with it well
22:24needed a riposte Roma and they got it there
22:27Pellegrini the keepers huge in a chirping
22:34very wasteful that Gravenbeek
22:48by Lopez that is right onto the head of Dzeko
22:58Alvarez
23:08some of the young players have to learn Jermaine about these European nights one
23:13of the elements to it as you've taught us is to be patient when required yeah
23:18but I think their style of play suits that you know they're a team that likes
23:22to knock it around Ajax and they need to be patient but there's no doubt that I
23:26think Roma are growing into this game and getting a little bit more confidence
23:30in there and the times they have attacked they've had some joy haven't
23:34they so yeah it's going to be important for this this I excited just to be
23:39patient but at the same time you know I think when you're in a team that's
23:43winning week in week out you they come up against this type of thing a lot in
23:47their own domestic league and you know they all know they need to just keep
23:51knocking it around and their chances will come
23:53Pedro pushed out to the left side gets it
24:11Costante, Diwara
24:16Mancini now Bruno Perez
24:22Pedro
24:35Pedro
24:40Dzeko offside
24:48this was your kind of range wasn't it you know it was a midfield every now and
24:52again when you get a bit of time when nobody comes to close you down you dream
24:56of those moments because you're constantly hitting balls under pressure
24:59Martin Steklenberg watching briefly here it's a knee problem
25:07picked up in the warm-up out here in vain Bruno Perez was on to his man
25:12Taliafico
25:23So Schoepfen getting his moment of opportunity Netherlands under 21
25:27international Steklenberg had had a run in the side six league games following
25:32the suspension of Ornana
25:37Taliafico
25:42there is Mancini again a player I've heard a lot of good things about Jermaine
25:48Gianluca Mancini
25:51he's done well there because you felt Neres had the beating of him they're
25:56playing quite a high line at times Roma those runs in behind are a constant
26:00thing that this Ajax side are looking for but they obviously believe in their
26:05pace and the quality they have back there to deal with it
26:09Chris Smalling injured at the moment Marash Kambula not available for Fonseca
26:15either Roma brought him in Kambula from Verona he's an Albanian international
26:22we all know about Smalling's career
26:32Taliafico
26:37Neres looking lively tonight the little Brazilian toe poke to safety by
26:44Diawara
26:48it's good plays and a bit of joy on that left-hand side just couldn't quite
26:55pick out his man you feel like I know Tadic has got a lot of quality but he
27:00can't be left isolated when the balls come into the box the two midfielders
27:03gonna have to go out there and get into the box and help him out as much as
27:05possible
27:15so Roma have resisted for 20 minutes they've had some good moments going the
27:20other way the sense that Ajax are yet really to get into their very top gear
27:26we've seen this routine already tonight
27:31missed out a couple but it's cleared by Roma here's Pedro
27:38Pellegrini couldn't get to it and Neres the other number seven gets on it and
27:42again it's Diawara plugging little holes there on the edge of the box
27:45Dzeko hunting it seen off by Wrench
27:55full-league debut in January for Wrench the right-back tonight there was a
27:59little experiment I understand with Tim Bear right back at the weekend
28:05Oh Wrench looks like a good player to me even in these early stages he's quite
28:14happy to get into midfield and then get on the ball he's got pace it was him
28:18then getting receiving the ball back to goal very unusual for a right-back to
28:24want to come that central into the pitch
28:28and now they've got to get into their shape Ajax Dzeko didn't get to him
28:35first time but now he has it and he strikes it straight at Scherpen good
28:41breakout it was a good breakout and they exploited the space that Wrench was that
28:48he left and this they do not want to see no solar this is that's not a good sign
28:54that's a pulled hamstring by the looks of it I don't want to misuse the turn
28:57but there was a look of resignation on the face of Paulo Fonseca there oh no
29:02not another one
29:19yeah he's
29:23fully sprinting there and difficult to see where it happened really look like
29:27it just happened there when he passed the ball but to see why Dzeko took on
29:32the shot in the end it felt like the attack was slowing down but it's a weird
29:36one because in the sprint he seemed okay it's almost when he stopped and he went
29:40to pass it he had the problem well hopefully it's not a long-term job for
29:45him in the immediate term BT Sport Premier League coverage big weekend
29:48coming up Fulham against Wolves in the Premier League on Friday evening 730 BT
29:53Sport 1 Manchester City leads on Saturday morning same channels and more
29:59on Sunday night with Sheffield United at home to Arsenal that's a 6.30 time on
30:06Sunday evening
30:16too many injuries Roma over the last 18 months or so that's made life very
30:20difficult for Fonseca the outstanding young talents Aniola among them of
30:23course I feel like we're coming into a period of the season where there's a lot
30:29of injuries in a lot of clubs all over Europe the constant football is really
30:37starting to take its toll on on the players two more for Bayern last night
30:40yeah Jermain yeah I watched that game and it was
30:45Marquinhos went down for PSG as well there's a few at the minute it's
30:51understandable players have basically been playing now for almost just not
30:55this constant for a year
31:01Tania Ficor
31:08in the old days Brian Clough would have had him in looked at them taking them
31:12for a walk and sent them home again between the matches yeah that was that
31:17was I used to be done with fluffy you'll be fine on the weekend get on with it
31:26it's not exactly getting on with it here confident in what they're about these
31:31days the ball is everything of course
31:34waiting their moment Alvarez Tadic that's not an easy one for Neres
31:56doing everything they can here aren't they they think they might be okay very
32:01strange one
32:10sometimes players can be a bit too keen for their own good of course I'll never
32:14get out of my mind the image of Kevin Struttman a few years ago he came back
32:20on the field you may not dissimilar circumstances it was a knee and he
32:24collapsed in a heap after about ten minutes and it was the start of a two
32:27years when he was fighting for his career yeah it's there's a play it's
32:32always when I get out there and playing you have to remember players plate
32:35injured as well a lot of the time we're not always at a hundred percent so you
32:40know if you feel something you think it can't worry you but then all of a
32:43sudden it might not be as bad as it as you thought but on the flip side to that
32:47as you said some most of the time it's a warning that something bad's about to
32:52give it away a little cheaply there by a Vaniers
33:06but a greenie
33:17oh dear well that was all too predictable spin at Solis down and
33:20actually the Roman defender who put the block on in his penalty box came off
33:24worst as well so two concerns here I think it is your banias forgive me
33:30Jermaine no he's giving it a go but I've only has took it right on the back of
33:35the head there I mean he was they can send you very dizzy those ones when they
33:40catch you like that and that was obvious that I was gonna happen there's a big
33:45player for him obviously and we did everything they can to keep him on the
33:48pitch but I think it was inevitable in the end
34:04Ricardo Calafiori big moment for him he's just 18 years of age
34:18Fonseca has bloodied him in the Europa League this season actually he's played
34:27three times in this competition to only twice in Serie A
34:49just gone in on that far left side Jermaine where spin at solo would
34:55normally patrol
35:00yeah it'd be interesting to see what I can bring to the table as you mentioned
35:06he was young I'm sure he's been really looking forward to an opportunity to get
35:14out there and I'm sure he can do it actually Roma have they seem to have
35:19stopped the flow of what I have to doing in the early stages of the game and
35:22well that's the injuries that have done that or not but they don't seem to be
35:26getting as much joy anymore
35:33Lopez hasn't had a great deal to do in fact she kept in at the other end has
35:37had a couple of saves routine saves admittedly but Lopez virtually nothing
35:41really yeah they've had the better chances Roma and actually for all the
35:47kind of intent that I X show they don't really seem to have that goal threat as
35:52yet the Roma have I could take your point and the plan is generally working
35:56quite well and of course guaranteed that Pellegrini would give it away on that
35:59breakout there's not a lot of real jet-heeled propulsion going the other
36:05way at the moment there is not quite what we used to see him from my acts on
36:09these big European nights again he stalled rather there didn't he yeah it
36:16just I wasn't convinced that he thought that he had the options going forward
36:21really I think Tadich came out as his left-hand side he's looked up he hasn't
36:24I think Tadich just needs to be a bit more disciplined at the minute stay
36:27central be that focal point allow Antony and there is to run off him with the
36:32support of the midfield but just try and stay more central in the game
36:39is that what you used to say to van der Vaart well no but we used to have
36:44Crouchy up top and Rafa would play a bit deeper so he could go where he wanted
36:49and he was good enough of course that helps as well California made a little
36:53foray forward and now he's got a track back let's see if this goes with a
36:58little bit more impulse now Neres
37:02Neres and Antony incidentally either side of Tadich well that's a theory with
37:11Klaassen squeezing in as well they're both former San Paolo players
37:20Antony that was a lovely ball from him and now Tadich yeah that's when they're
37:25good when that ball goes back into midfield they have at least two runners
37:31for that kind of ball there in behind and when they do that they're a problem
37:35really the only thing that surprised me at this day at the back of the net in
37:39any time Tadich cuts in onto that left foot from that type of distance
37:43the inevitable happens he's just off balance there though I think the Roma
37:48defense just did well to put enough pressure on him
37:52Lopez picks up Bruno Perez can't keep it Neres, Gravenberg to Klaassen
38:01Alvarez, Gravenberg, Neres
38:09Ajax corner Manchester United goal elsewhere we hear Marcus Rashford pass
38:14Fitz to play and he has made his mark
38:22Tadich all by himself this time, set move Gravenberg
38:43Martinez hooked it back in there referee allows Roma the option to play on and
38:52away they go seeking to profit from it it's Pellegrini
39:00and again and he's got a free kick just caught by Alvarez
39:06yeah he did well to get anything out of that in the end, Erringeco's thinking
39:12he should have passed the ball to him, it was a foul though
39:20but more joy on that counter-attack though from from Roma all those little
39:24moments will fill them with confidence and just allow them just to defend a bit
39:30better each time knowing that they've got a chance at the top end
39:34confirmation of Rashford on the half hour for Manchester United at Granada
39:39only goal so far tonight across the four quarterfinals, Erringeco's come close a
39:45couple of times here for Roma
39:57Pellegrini, Diawara well played but now it's hooked over the top by
40:04Cristante, did Diawara need to hit that Jermaine in your view yeah I think he's
40:08offside when it comes to him but he's definitely should have been hitting it
40:13first time yeah he's offside clearly but I think it was just the the angle that
40:17it came to him at, he's probably a little bit too high but in offside position
40:23anyway I think that's what you know the difference between these two teams is
40:29you know Roma have that ability to kind of get the ball wide and get it in the
40:33box knowing that Dzeko is going to be a threat whereas Ajax has got to be much
40:38more intricate with their passing and you know not that it's any less of a way
40:46to score but it just can you know it's got to be perfect especially when you're
40:49playing against five at the back I don't think Roma need to worry about balls
40:52getting whipped in the box to Tadic, just got to watch the runners
40:59Bruno Pérez doesn't quite have the pace of his former years remember him in his
41:04Torino youth, was swashbuckling right-sided wing back or right fullback
41:09then he's lost a yard or two since then still knows his way around of course
41:15it's 31 now
41:20Veratour runs away from Pedro, Tagliafico
41:29of course we rightly praise Ajax for their incredible system of youth
41:34development but their network internationally is fairly admirable as
41:40well and they've got two Argentines tonight Martinez and Tagliafico who are
41:44good examples of that this fellow as well Alvarez signed from Mexico you know
41:48they scout with the best of them internationally don't they?
41:51they always have them again like we touched on before and it's also a
41:55football club where you want to go to develop yourself as a young player you
41:59know the Ajax way is a thing you know you spoke about Johan Cruyff and his
42:03influence on the football club even when I was coming through at Forest and we
42:06played against young Ajax teams they were always brilliant and you always
42:10knew it was a team that was going to play good football and it was going to
42:13be hard to play against and if you were ever at that football club you had to be
42:17a good footballer so it's inevitable that they go and get the best as well
42:25Tenach building on the work of Peter Bosz his career has been a bit of a roller
42:36coaster since he left here lost a couple of big jobs in the Bundesliga
42:45Alvarez on patrol
42:49I think he was looking for it and they obliged him Tenach now he wants to get on with it
43:02I think everybody got what they wanted there do you?
43:04well Crescenti knew exactly what he was doing and like you said he's just
43:09trying to waste time he's trying to stop the quick free kick which is what he's
43:12doing right there and he's been smart about it to the point where I don't think the
43:16referees even spotted it
43:23should have been a booking really
43:29Europa League ever present this season Crescenti
43:33Antonio has not had the chance really to test out the youngster the 18 year old
43:47Calafiore who's come on here during this first half been a lot more down this
43:50left side it's all just a little pedestrian Jermaine as you pointed out
43:54early tonight they have their moments Ajax but it's better when if it goes
43:59into Tadic or a midfielder and then comes back with runners and they got to
44:04try and find a runner then that's when they're at their best Ajax when it when
44:08it's kind of ball into feet and pass pass pass yeah I think it's a bit
44:11predictable
44:20they should just always be thinking out that we got a break that defensive line
44:24that you can see there Roma where's the runners who because if you look Roma
44:27are playing very high it allows them to press the ball really well because
44:31they're managing to get up the pitch so there's so much space in behind to the
44:36point where I think that back five are now thinking actually for pace we've got
44:40the beating of them
44:44Clarsen
44:49the Venice read that well but the hesitation might be so costly
44:53Mancini backed off Clarsen must score and does and Ajax make the breakthrough
44:57helped by a very calamitous moment of indecision for Roma
45:03Davi Clarsen in his second spell at Ajax the mainspring of what is shaping to be a
45:10memorable season
45:13I'm not sure what's going through the defenders head here I think it's is it
45:22Mancini what's he thinking he's got to come out and deal with that just backs
45:26off and backs off and backs off and ends up doing nothing the ball was there for
45:31him to go and win and he let Clarsen to take advantage of the situation and it's
45:37a great finish in the end you're thinking when he slid it to Tadic he
45:40should hit it but he knew exactly what he was doing Duzan Tadic cuts it back to
45:45Clarsen he sticks it away
45:50so Clarsen strikes for the third time in this European season for Ajax
45:57reasonable career return as a midfield player actually as a goal scorer in
46:01Europe that's now 14 the career goals for him having a wonderful season and a
46:09lot of good work Jermaine undone for Roma in this first half so frustrating
46:14yeah really strange goal now they've got a bit of a wind in the sail and
46:20there may be another one here and Pau Lopez just about did enough it's a good
46:27save in the end nice room for man Anthony of that right hand side don't
46:32think he quite got the connection that he wanted on it but Roma need to steady
46:36the ship
46:45one might argue Jermaine we've kind of seen their season played out in this
46:50first half there's an obvious talent the confidence was low starting but they
46:54grew into it and then a mistake happens and everybody just drops and they could
46:59be two down yeah I think you know it feels like a moment get to halftime
47:02because they've been they've been okay Roma they've not been that bad well I'm
47:07just not sure what Mancini's doing there Di Iwaro does a great job kind of
47:11tracking back in midfield and it was just like all right come on deal with
47:14this and the dropping off and the backing off the shot to everybody
47:19there's that earlier chance yeah he just didn't get the contact that he needed on
47:25it there Anthony
47:42Bruno Perez
47:51Cristante
47:54Ibanez happily able to continue
47:59Pellegrini, Calafiore, Di Iwaro
48:08now Pedro not much seen of him again tonight and that is not really a ball
48:15that's going to trouble much Wrench slightly unorthodox but no harm done
48:21Tadic that's a good firm challenge by Mancini a bit more decisive there
48:30Cristante to Di Iwaro nicely work let's see what Pedro could do here keeps it
48:37moving Calafiore gets a corner out of it that's good from Roma stepped it up
48:45again now cannot overstate how superb Clarsen was as Werder Bremen seemed to
48:55be crumbling and dropping out of the Bundesliga they're one of the longest
48:59established clubs in the top flight in Germany but Clarsen dragged to the side
49:04through last season put his head to that as well
49:14Robin Bich
49:17stopped by Di Iwaro
49:28Di Iwaro
49:45go to Pellegrini nice little nutmeg of the referee
49:53Calafiore
49:57Cristante
50:01was there an elbow was it something the other way here
50:06Antony
50:10trying to be a nuisance well I'm not sure he's given the free kick to it but
50:15if he's given it to Ajax I just don't feel like it was their free kick there's
50:22that situation where Mancini's got just be much more assertive ends up in
50:27no-man's-land and Clarsen did not disappoint
50:45Ryan Kragenbech
50:49Neres and back by Alvarez one eye on the clock here I think Ajax might be a
50:59small measure of additional time given the injury to Spinazzola
51:11two minutes
51:13Timber
51:23Italia Fico waiting for Neres that's never gonna give you much to work with
51:28there
51:35backward by Martinez to his young goalkeeper
51:43Di Iwaro
51:46Di Iwaro
52:08thumping clearance by Paulo Pez echoing around the vast and empty arena here in
52:14Amsterdam
52:31which
52:37for Jekyll
52:44Bruno Pérez
52:58led off by Pellegrini Di Iwaro time short now for Roma in this first half
53:04Cristante
53:08Pedro that's nice Pellegrini trapped all the way across by Martinez need to
53:20make something happen now Roma because the whistle surely about to go it does
53:24go now from our Russian referee and Darby Clarsen marches off with a goal
53:29for Ajax Ponseca and his men played some decent stuff tonight but the defensive
53:37miscommunication certainly a very heavy price to pay and out of nothing Ajax
53:42getting on the scoreboard and Roma also losing a player in an already stretched
53:47squad to injury spin ups
