00:00Let's talk the quarterback position.
00:05Donnie, in my estimation, there's a group of four quarterbacks that are in line for
00:08a big payday at a point this offseason.
00:11Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys, Jordan Love with the Green Bay Packers, Trevor Lawrence
00:17with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tua Tungavailoa with the Miami Dolphins.
00:21Here is Tua at mandatory minicamp in Miami, speaking about his contract situation with
00:27the Finns.
00:28Well, I'll tell you one thing.
00:30The market is the market.
00:31If we didn't have a market, then none of that would matter.
00:35Just be an organizational thing, you know?
00:38Didn't matter if that guy got paid that, because it's up to the organization.
00:41So that's what I would say.
00:43The market is the market.
00:44That's it.
00:45Are you confident that a deal will get done before training camp?
00:48I'm confident that a deal will get done.
00:50But then again, it's not in my control.
00:54You know, it's really up to both sides meeting in the middle with this.
01:01I mean, that's some highbrow stuff out of Tua Tungavailoa.
01:05The market is the market.
01:07If we didn't have a market, these things would not get done.
01:10That's Mike Tomlin-esque.
01:11The standard is the standard.
01:14But Tua is right.
01:15The market for quarterbacks is robust, and thus, because of how high paid the quarterback
01:21position is and continues to be in the National Football League, Tua is in for a big payday.
01:29When exactly, DRS, do you expect that contract extension between the Dolphins and Tua Tungavailoa
01:36to come this offseason?
01:37By the way, here's what I took out of that quick interview right there post-practice
01:41was.
01:42He's clearly a huge Florida Panthers fan.
01:43I mean, drop it in the organization at the right time at this point.
01:45I mean, this guy's clearly hockeyed up at this point.
01:48Having said that, and who knows, maybe Tua will be at some of those games in Sunrise.
01:52He's the trickiest contract.
01:54Because I've said this.
01:55I mean, again, we can bang on Daniel Jones all the time because it's just a lot of fun.
01:58Like, worst contract ever.
02:00Never should have gotten it.
02:01You know me.
02:02I usually back the players in this situation because they're right.
02:05When everybody in the same boat as them is getting paid, they feel the right that they
02:08should be paid as well.
02:09And the going rate for a starting quarterback, the bottom is Daniel Jones right now.
02:13And if everybody's getting paid higher and higher, the sooner you sign these guys, the
02:16better because the next bar is going to be cleared by the player that didn't get signed
02:20before him.
02:21But having said that, the reason why I'm having such a tough time with Tua is, last year he
02:25did show us a lot.
02:26And I don't mean just being on the field throwing touchdown passes.
02:29Just being on the field itself.
02:31Because we didn't think he'd be able to make it through a full season with those concussion
02:34issues.
02:35Now, the question is typically, hey, if you have a surgically repaired shoulder or you
02:39tore the Achilles or you tore your ACL, sometimes you can say to yourself, well, that's just
02:43a little bit of bad luck and some of the hits I took.
02:45But a concussion can certainly appear at any time and just derail your entire season.
02:50So I understand why the Miami Dolphins basically said last year, hey, kid, you've got to go
02:54through this season and show us that you can be healthy.
02:57And he did make it healthy.
02:58And I wonder if he can do this again.
03:00Because as he's saying, hey, I'm going to get a deal done before training camp, then
03:03he's not getting a deal.
03:04It's like, OK, let's go one year, $22 million guaranteed and prove it.
03:07That's not going to be the case.
03:08This is going to be four years, a few hundred million dollars and a lot of guaranteed bonus
03:13money here.
03:14And that's the tough part about it.
03:15If Tua didn't have any concussion issues, absolutely, he would have already been paid
03:20already.
03:21But at this point right now, this is so tricky because I want to say, yes, pay the guy because
03:24it's going to save you money.
03:25But boy, oh boy, if you give a quarterback long term guaranteed money and he can't stay
03:30on the field, not because his ankle hurts or he gets an Achilles injury, but because
03:34he has concussion issues, one or two more of those men, he doesn't play anymore.
03:38And you're on the hook for that for the next three to four years.
03:45Yeah.
03:46Yeah.
03:47Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Yeah.
03:50Yeah.
