00:00Afternoon everyone and thank you for attending this post-match press
00:04conference with Ireland coach Heinrich Milan. Just a reminder to please wait
00:08for a microphone before you ask your question and please put up your hands so
00:13that Craig will be able to indicate that you can ask. Thank you. Oh and reminder no
00:19photos and videos in this room during post-match press conferences. Many thanks.
00:24Hi Heinrich. Hi. That looked tough work out there for the for the batters. I mean
00:30what are the players saying? Are they reflecting that you know winning the
00:33toss really is crucial in these games in New York? Yeah I guess if you look at
00:38them you know the way they bowled up front there was obviously pretty
00:41challenging. We had to change our game plan a couple of times and unfortunately
00:45it just didn't go the way we wanted it to work out today.
00:50So down here Nathan Jones. Heinrich, a lot of talk coming into this about the kind of
01:00blueprint of reassessing and maybe trying to elongate depending on the
01:05conditions. How were you satisfied with the assessment that went out when that
01:09went on and and how game plans did change or do you think there could be
01:13improvements there? Yeah look Mike Tyson said any game plan change we get punched
01:19in the face and I think there was you know there was some serious bowling out
01:22there. I think they've got three or four serious quick bowlers which we've seen
01:25over a period of time can perform it at this level and look we communicated
01:29well but it's one thing talking about it's another thing executing it
01:32under pressure when you know there's there's some quality that's coming down
01:35at you. Were you expecting that much and so late in the innings that much
01:41sideways movement and uneven bounce? Look I guess we saw it in the first in the
01:45game a couple of days ago. Try to do as much homework as we can even though we
01:49weren't at the ground training or seeing the you know playing on the surface so
01:52you know we spoke to the groundsman obviously the scores were totally
01:56different in that warm-up game that was played on that surface so we weren't
01:59necessarily expecting it to behave like it did but again we've got to be better
02:03with our execution of our skills and that's obviously something we'll reflect on.
02:06To what extent is it minefield of a pitch you haven't seen it before and now
02:10you've seen it or to what extent do you talk about shot selection and things
02:14like that? Yeah maybe a bit of all of the above but at the end of the day look we
02:18got a quick turnaround you know it was obviously pretty tough work out there
02:23today but we've played some good cricket over the last little period and we've
02:26got plenty in the bank to withdraw from that. Just wondering, just an extension of
02:32the previous question, do you consider this as a 96 all-out pitch or do you do
02:37like to put the blame on the battles maybe so what is your overall assessment
02:41of the pitch you have got today? Look I guess when you look at T20 cricket you
02:47want to see runs and boundaries isn't it so you can make your own conclusion
02:51whether it's a 96 wicket at the end of the day you got to try and do things
02:56well whichever way you want you do them whether it's battle ball first and we'll
03:00obviously reassess you know the way we go about our business over the next 24
03:03hours with a quick turnaround and look to be a little bit better on Friday. So
03:07just a gentleman in the brown jacket. Yep, yep, you're right, brown jacket.
03:12Hi, I know it's too early to reflect on lessons learned but how easy or difficult
03:18is it to adjust to playing here in these conditions and is it very different than
03:23what you've experienced before? Yeah it's tough to adjust when you don't know
03:28what you have to adjust to. Like I said earlier unfortunately the way it's
03:32worked out from a scheduling point of view you know today was first time our
03:35players saw the ground so we were trying to be as diligent as we could in
03:38terms of our preparation work but obviously we've got to you know try and
03:43take everything we've learned here in the last 24, in the last five or six
03:46hours into the next 24 hours and make sure we get that right on Friday.
03:54James
04:05Actually I'm asking you one thing, I know the Ireland score a very low score here but
04:15just asking you this pitch, how it works and what maximum score you think a team can make here?
04:23Yeah look when we were finding it really tough we were talking about if we can get to 130, 140
04:29and if we can back that up in the execution of our skills from a bowling
04:34point of view that's probably we were looking at to try and get to at one
04:37stage yep.
04:41So looking forward what kind of a pitch would you like to practice before the
04:48next one if this is the kind of uneven bounce? Yeah I don't think it's about the
04:53training to be honest I think it's more you got to take into account that when
04:58you play the game you need a really good surface or as good a surface as
05:01you can get and unfortunately what we've seen over the last couple games
05:05just doesn't necessarily live up to that so hopefully you know over the next day
05:09or so it can hopefully flatten out a little bit and we can see some good
05:12cricket come Friday.
05:13Hendrik, a World Cup comes around once in a while and and we've seen the other
05:20World Cups are shrinking and this one was a great opportunity where we have 20
05:24teams playing it's a great chance for you guys to show yourself at the
05:30biggest stage. Do you expect better conditions and better logistics for a World Cup?
05:35I think we just want to see good cricket don't we? It's the pinnacle of our event and
05:39it doesn't have to be 200 play 200 all the time it just needs to be an equal
05:44contest and I think if you look at today it is debatable where that was.
05:49Hendrik, what have you made of the practice facilities we've been we've been
05:54hearing kind of rumors that they're not quite to scratch the pitches aren't
05:59particularly great we know that South Africa's players didn't have their
06:02bowlers bowling to their batters so what's your view of them so in your
06:08experience so far?
06:09Yeah look we had a tight turnaround we were out there as long as we could and as hard as we
06:14could to create a training environment that set our players up to try and
06:17perform today you know if you wherever you travel around the world you not
06:22always get the the perfect conditions to train in and I guess that's the mindset
06:25that we've had around it and we get on with it we don't worry about it and you
06:29know trying to be versatile and adaptable and we've spoken a lot about
06:32that and hopefully as you know we keep talking about it we keep showing those
06:35attributes.
06:36It must be frustrating though because it's it's your head on the block here
06:39and it's your you guys who are being judged and if the facilities aren't to
06:43scratch and your players aren't properly prepared you know how does that leave
06:47you feeling?
06:48Yeah look it's not just our jobs to you know coach the players is creating an
06:52environment it's lead the team it's so you're from that point of view we're
06:55trying to do that work in the background too around training that environment
06:57that is you know versatile and agile and gets on with the job and hopefully when
07:01we get to services like these or situations or conditions like these then
07:04our players are ready to change and adapt and execute their skills under
07:09pressure because ultimately that's where it needs to happen across the line.
07:12Last question Nathan Jones in the front here.
07:15Just because you talked about competitive balance I'm pretty sure India have been
07:18in here and you say this is the first time you've been in.
07:22Do you think that's fair?
07:23Say again sorry.
07:24I think you talked about competitive balance before and preparation I'm pretty sure India
07:27have been in the ground before today and you said you guys haven't.
07:31Is that frustrating?
07:33It's obviously not ideal when you think first time we took some catches today was when the
07:39guys were warming up so look it's not ideal but that's not an excuse you know it is what
07:43it is we speak about being at adaptable and versatile and you know that's what the way
07:47we're gonna look at it we want to keep those controllables under our thumb and if we can
07:50try and do that you know hopefully over a period of time that's the sort of versatile
07:53cricketers we'll create.
07:54Thank you very much.
