00:02 - Conservationists in the UK are praising
00:05 an underwater plant for its ability
00:07 to absorb pollutants from the water.
00:10 And now an effort is underway to restore it
00:13 in the Tees River.
00:14 As volunteers hope the plant will improve the habitat
00:17 and water quality of the body of water
00:19 on England's northeastern coast.
00:21 Leonardo Feldman has more.
00:23 - The United Kingdom is planting seagrass meadow
00:25 in an effort to combat climate change.
00:28 The Tees River Trust says this project will benefit
00:30 not only the species living in the area,
00:33 but also it will help clean out pollutants from the water.
00:36 - A meadow seagrass can provide habitat
00:39 for all sorts of species of small fish,
00:41 marine invertebrates.
00:43 It can actually work towards improving water quality
00:46 and maybe also in keeping carbon locked into the sediment
00:50 rather than releasing it into the marine environment.
00:52 - It is worth noting that the seagrass
00:54 will first be grown on shore in tanks with seawater,
00:58 given that the survival rate is a lot better that way
01:01 rather than planting the seeds already in the location
01:04 where they'll eventually be.
01:05 - The idea is we'll keep half here
01:07 at the Trust Geo nursery,
01:09 but the other half will go out into the estuary
01:12 later in the summer.
01:13 So that then becomes that self-sustaining meadow.
01:17 - The same group is also working on another project.
01:19 They plan on reintroducing oysters to the estuary.
01:22 And in this location, we've got 17 baskets,
01:25 so about 600 just under oysters in this area.
01:29 A single oyster can filter up to 200 liters of water a day.
01:33 So if you get them in enough volume,
01:35 they can actually clear up the water in your local area,
01:38 which means more light for plants
01:39 such as seagrass to flourish.
01:41 - For EarthX, I'm Leonardo Feldman.
