00:02 A gorilla at the Berlin Zoo is celebrating a big birthday.
00:06 Fatu, a female Western lowland gorilla
00:09 living at the zoo since the late '50s,
00:11 recently turned 67.
00:14 To mark the special occasion,
00:15 zookeepers prepared a basket of fruit,
00:17 which included goodies like strawberries.
00:20 Wildlife officials at the zoo say this is a special treat
00:23 because fruit contains too much sugar for the primates,
00:26 so they are usually kept on a vegetable diet.
00:29 Scientists say in the wild,
00:31 gorillas can live between 35 and 40 years,
00:34 which leads some people, including the zoo's veterinarian,
00:37 to believe Fatu may likely be the oldest gorilla alive.
00:41 (speaking in foreign language)
00:43 So there's no gorilla in the world
00:44 that has reached such an advanced age.
00:46 We know for sure from gorillas kept in zoos,
00:49 and we have to assume that in the wild,
00:51 where the animals never reach such an old age
00:53 as they do in zoos,
00:54 that there is no animal older than her.
00:56 We are therefore proud to say
00:57 that this is the oldest gorilla in the world.
01:00 Western lowland gorillas usually live in a group
01:02 of several female gorillas and one male gorilla,
01:06 or the silverback.
01:07 But at the zoo, Fatu has her own private enclosure.
01:10 Not to worry, though.
01:11 She can have contact with her fellow gorillas
01:13 anytime she wants.
