00:02 - Man, this (beep) truck is (beep)
00:05 - This here is Belmont Gardens,
00:06 go.
00:07 The neighborhood's shaped by Mayor Daley's
00:09 promotional lawn culture.
00:11 But Jonathan and Caroline are looking to make a change.
00:15 - I'm Caroline Moody and this is Jonathan Poole
00:16 and we're Chicagoans and we own this home.
00:20 - We got a home and lawn that might be haunted.
00:23 - There's been reports that there's some
00:25 paranormal activity there.
00:27 Paranormal activity there.
00:29 (dramatic music)
00:30 - It's just so unnerving.
00:31 - A lot of spooky stuff going on here.
00:35 Right, Louie?
00:36 You know, you got specters, you got spooks.
00:38 - So we call Joey now.
00:40 - You know, I'm not normally a woo-woo kind of guy
00:43 being a botanist and a scientist, you know.
00:45 I believe some of this stuff.
00:46 I get a little woo-woo, you know.
00:48 It's just a nice, a nice working class
00:54 Northwest side Chicago neighborhood.
00:56 - Yeah.
00:58 - It's hard to work with this.
00:59 - Hey. - Hey, hey.
01:00 - What's going on?
01:01 Nice to see you again. - Nice to see you.
01:02 - They're the creative type.
01:03 They're artsy.
01:04 Caroline is a tattoo artist
01:06 and Jonathan is a screen printer.
01:08 They were both drawn to this place
01:10 with dreams of transforming this ridiculously massive
01:13 and boring lawn.
01:15 - Basically, the yard was the first entry point
01:17 into us wanting the property
01:18 because we wanted to be still in the city
01:20 but not completely surrounded by neighbors everywhere.
01:24 - Now, there's a lot of people like that,
01:26 you know, in the Chicago area
01:28 that like living in a city landscape.
01:31 It's full of life.
01:32 Almost the opposite of the suburban mentality.
01:34 One of the Chicagoans most proactively killing
01:39 as many lawns as he can is Jeremy Orms.
01:42 - When Jonathan Caroline asked me to come over
01:45 and look at this, I was like, oh my gosh,
01:47 look at this expanse of nothingness.
01:50 But there's so much potential here.
01:52 And I talk about exercising these ghosts
01:55 and bringing back the ghosts of the once prevalent prairie.
01:58 We're in Illinois, which used to be 60% prairie.
02:01 - If we do recognize that the lawn is inhabited
02:09 by a spirit and needs to be destroyed,
02:11 what would you guys like to see here in its place?
02:14 - So we want some shade.
02:16 See, it's very bright in the late afternoon.
02:19 - We were just really interested in having more trees
02:22 and more long-term shade coverage.
02:23 And then just whatever the area needs to be happy
02:27 and healthy and how we can help out pollinators.
02:29 And we love having bunnies
02:30 and all the other critters that run around.
02:32 E's and butterflies and all those little critters
02:35 that are in trouble.
02:35 - Killing lawns and planting native plants
02:38 is a simple act that helps restore the foundation
02:40 of the local ecosystem.
02:42 Jonathan and Caroline understand this.
02:44 Now we must all confront what's haunting their place.
02:51 - We need to know what's causing this haunting.
02:53 - When Caroline and Jonathan said
02:54 they felt the presence here.
02:56 - We need to know now.
02:57 - We need answers.
02:58 - I was, you know, kind of skeptical.
03:00 - Seen a bunch of stuff.
03:02 I'm starting to get some readings on here.
03:03 - You go ahead of me.
03:04 It means there's some kind of activity,
03:06 a paranormal variety.
03:07 - It's pointing to the backyard.
03:09 - Oh, there's something on the other side of that door.
03:11 - Okay, Louie.
03:12 - Whatever it is, it's behind this door on the lawn.
03:15 Whoa.
03:17 - Can we get more fog up here?
03:21 (beep)
03:23 - A portal.
03:25 - Everyone knows Chicago's ground zero
03:27 for paranormal activity.
03:28 - What is that?
03:31 - Looks like a floating orb.
03:33 - Oh my God, it's taking shape.
03:36 - Is it Mayor Daley, the first?
03:39 - Oh my God, it does look like Richard J. Daley.
03:43 - Is he wearing a fez?
03:44 - At the end of the day, no one did more
03:46 to promote the culture of the lawn
03:47 in Chicago tri-state area than Mayor Daley.
03:49 - Mr. Mayor, what are you manifesting?
03:52 - Why are you holding on?
03:53 Why are you here above the lawn?
03:56 What must we know?
03:57 - Joey and Dale, I am reaching out to you
04:00 from the afterlife where I have been overcome
04:03 with grief at the acres and acres of prairie,
04:06 which I paved over in Chicago's great mid-century expansion.
04:10 - We completely understand your regress, Mr. Mayor,
04:12 but it's a little too late for that now.
04:14 - With all due respect, your honor,
04:16 a lot of damage has already been done.
04:18 Chicagoans never say never.
04:20 I hereby bequeath you with the special quest
04:23 to destroy as many Chicago lawns as possible
04:27 and restore the prairie city lot by city lot.
04:33 Go forth and kill the lawns and replant the prairies.
04:37 - It's very apparent to me that he's apologetic
04:41 and wants to make up for it,
04:42 and so we're gonna help him do that.
04:44 - It's kind of in a wheelhouse of what we're already doing,
04:46 you know, so, and I felt honored to be bequeathed
04:48 with the quest from the mayor, from the afterlife.
04:51 I just wow.
04:52 Goes to show, you know,
04:53 that the most hardcore lawn lover can repent,
04:56 even if from beyond a grave, you know, it's never too late.
04:59 (rock music)
