00:00 If we had to find five takeaways from these EU parliamentary elections,
00:05 I guess we're starting off with winners and Ursula von der Leyen.
00:09 The EU Commission President wasn't standing on this particular ballot.
00:13 However, the results mean she's almost certain to remain the next EU Commission President.
00:19 Marine Le Pen of National Rally in France certainly needs a mention.
00:23 Her party absolutely dominating in that particular country.
00:27 But where there's winners, there has to be losers.
00:30 We're staying in France with Emmanuel Macron,
00:32 who's had to call snap elections and dissolve parliament there
00:35 following a poor showing from his party.
00:37 Also, here in Germany, there are calls for Olaf Scholz to do something similar.
00:41 His SPD party put in their worst national performance in over 100 years in an election.
00:48 Elsewhere, what we have to really take away is that there will be a large right-wing
00:53 and far-right element in the next European Parliament.
00:56 And that brings us to our following points.
00:59 When it comes to Ukraine, yes, there will be continued support.
01:02 However, if it comes to the Commission asking for bigger budgets,
01:06 they're going to have to get those through a parliament which is now populated by people
01:10 that aren't wanting to send money or weapons to Ukraine.
01:13 When it comes to climate action, similar situation there.
01:17 There are going to be more and more people in that parliament
01:20 that don't want to see certain laws passed.
01:23 Particularly, we're looking ahead to the ruling on getting rid of the combustion engine in the EU
01:29 by the middle of the 2030s. Keep an eye on that one.
01:33 And then there's EU expansion.
01:35 In order to allow more countries in, we're thinking Ukraine, we're thinking Moldova,
01:39 we're thinking the Western Balkans. It needs the approval of parliament.
01:43 It's going to be a tricky get under the current make-up of the new EU Parliament.
