This video features the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra who have visited Edinburgh on numerous occasions, first in 1997 followed by their welcome second visit in 2000 before returning on demand delighting audiences in 2005, 2007. 2014 and 2023, 2007 being a special year indeed as there was not one but two mini tattoo performances. I went to both and filmed at each event.

The Trinidad & Tobago Defence Steel Orchestra and Drums is the official army band of the countries of Trinidad and Tobago, islands in the carribean. The band's instruments are known as pans, made of old oil barrels. To create the pans, the upper part of an oil barrel gets chopped off and then is hammered to create indented areas of different sizes. It's a unique instrument as it's one of the few that creates different sounds within one area of play. The pan is known widely for being the nation's national instrument.

The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force is the military organisation responsbile for the defense of the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, the Coast Guard, the Air Guard and the Defence Force Reserves.
The Regiment provides the majority of the musicians assigned to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra which is the world's first and only military steel band. The TTR is structured like a light infantry brigade with a pair of infantry battalions, plus engineering and logistic support units.
