00:00What is it like? Inside Out was your baby, now Inside Out 2, she's a real teenager ten years later.
00:07What is it like to be back here revisiting Riley and for people to be so excited about what's to come with all these new emotions?
00:15It's really exciting to see the response from people that they still like the first film and they're interested to see what else can be done.
00:23And, spoiler, there's a lot.
00:27Listen, I was already asking, in ten years, are we going to get three? I would love to see Riley go to college.
00:31Love to see that bridesmaid moment that is hinted at in the film.
00:35What are you most excited about when it comes to the future of Riley and how this movie expands deeper into the mind?
00:42Well, what's great about this movie is it picks up where the last one left off.
00:46So, it's kind of the next chapter in this life, the next chapter that has all the added things.
00:51When a kid turns 12, 13, it starts to go through puberty and so forth.
00:55So, it's so great to sort of see an addendum and something that actually enriches a franchise world instead of kind of another story of the same.
01:05It takes it to a new place.
01:07I'm curious, what was the emotion that resonated with each of you most when it came time to decide what we were going to explore in this movie?
01:16I have to say anxiety.
01:18It's so present in everybody's minds, especially coming out of COVID and all of the things that have happened in the world.
01:24So, I think that's the winner in this one.
01:27Yeah, I'd agree.
01:28That was definitely a driver in my headquarters during junior high and maybe a few years as an adult as well.
01:35Well, I mean, there's also the anxiety of the box office and Hollywood and the fact that, you know, you guys won an Oscar just across the street for the first one.
01:43How do you manage that professionally in making a sequel and whether or not, you know, it's up to par, if you will?
01:51Well, I think the truth of it is it's actually really fun making movies.
01:56We're so lucky to get to do what we do.
01:59And so, you try to put the pressures of all that other stuff aside and just enjoy making the movie.
02:06Let it speak to you.
02:07You're the creator and you're the first audience.
02:11What do you remember about seeing the finish cut the first time?
02:14Say again?
02:15What do you remember about seeing the finish cut the first time, knowing where this movie was going?
02:19I was blown away by the emotional ending of this film and how it leads to something that almost is hard to explain,
02:28but really hits you on a gut level in terms of what these characters are going through and,
02:32attendantly, what Riley's going through at the same time.
02:35The way that Pete and the filmmakers put it together is really stunning.
02:39All right.
02:40So, I hear rumors on the Internet that Toy Story 5 is moving along quite nicely.
02:45Where's our current status of that?
02:48Is there a director locked in at this point?
02:51Maybe.
02:52Maybe.
02:53Who could that be?
02:55Maybe somebody you know.
02:57Who could that be?
02:59Well, we like to hold back these surprises to loop them out into the world at the right time.
03:03Which is the premiere of Inside Out 2.
03:05Hell no.
03:06We're focused on this movie, Inside Out 2.
03:09I will say this.
03:10You all have kind of clarified what the future of Pixar looks like when it comes to the type of movies you want to make.
03:17You said that they wanted to make things with kind of broader appeal, maybe less autobiographical feel.
03:23I wanted to clarify potentially further.
03:25Because a lot of people took that to mean, you know, potentially that could mean less racial diversity.
03:30Or less specifically cultural stories.
03:33What did you mean by that?
03:35By less autobiographical?
03:36I feel like that maybe got a little misinterpreted.
03:38What we really want are very specific personal ideas that speak universally.
03:44And that's not always the case.
03:46You know, like you tell a story sometimes and people are like, uh-huh.
03:48And then other times they're like, I've had that too.
03:51Those are the kind of stories that we're looking for.
03:53And sometimes that takes a little bit more sorting in the weeds.
03:56But that's what we're about.
03:58As you say, you want the personal to be a stepping stone to the universal.
04:02Not just sort of dwell on autobiography or something like that.
04:06Something that actually speaks to a broad group of people.
04:09I have to ask you one more thing.
04:11Because something that apparently speaks to a broad group of people.
04:14Is that dad in Inside Out is actually the internet's favorite hot animated dad.
04:20Were you aware of this?
04:22No. No.
04:23And in fact, okay, so we had the gag of going into his head.
04:27And we wanted all the emotions to have mustaches.
04:29So we could tell who they were.
04:31And then I'm like, I don't know.
04:32Dad doesn't look very good with a mustache.
04:34But all right.
04:35I guess we have to.
04:36And it turned out to be a good choice.
04:39The internet disagrees with your choice.
04:41So I'm glad that you went with the mustache.
04:43We're actually doing a little bit of a ranking over Variety.
04:46So I had to make sure to ask you all that question.
04:49Kyle wears it well.
04:50He voices hot dad well.
