Elon Musk advised against using electronic voting machines (EVMs) due to hacking risks, sparking debates on their security amid irregularities in Puerto Rico's primaries. However, India defended its third-generation M3 EVMs as tamper-proof, with no connectivity and oversight from IIT experts and the Election Commission. The Supreme Court issued directives to further strengthen EVM security while rejecting demands for 100% VVPAT verification.

00:00EVM debate reignited once again. Elon Musk's social media post triggered outrage in India.
00:11What the ex-Indian minister responded on claim?
00:16Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has voiced concern over the use of electronic
00:21voting machine, advising against their implementation due to potential vulnerabilities to hacking.
00:27His remarks come amid growing debate and scrutiny over the security of EVMs globally,
00:33particularly following the allegations of irregularity in Puerto Rico's recent primary
00:38elections where online voting triggered chaos.
00:43Musk took to ex-formerly Twitter to express his stance, stating that we should eliminate
00:48EVMs. The risk of being hacked by humans or AI, while small, is still too high.
00:54His comments were in response to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent hopeful of the
00:592024 U.S. election, who highlighted the issues faced in Puerto Rico's primary related to
01:05EVMs. Kennedy Jr. pointed out that while a paper trail allowed election officials to
01:10identify and collect the vote tallies in Puerto Rico, there are concerns about the jurisdictions
01:15without such a backup system. He advocated for a return to paper ballots to ensure every
01:20vote is counted accurately and elections remain secure from electronic interference.
01:27While these concerns have gained traction in the United States, the scenario in India
01:31represents a contrasting picture. His comments triggered responses in India with several
01:37Indian opposition figures, despite winning a large amount of seats this time, justifying
01:42Elon Musk's stance. Among the names were none other than Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh
01:48Yadav and Rahul Gandhi of the Congress Party. However, the former Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar
01:54countered Musk's agreement, terming it as a huge, sweeping generalization that implies
02:00no one can build a secure digital hardware. He highlighted that the Indian EVMs have low
02:05connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Internet access, making them virtually unhackable.
02:11Chandrasekhar also extended an invitation to Musk to learn more about India's EVM architecture
02:16and the measures taken to ensure their security. India employs third-generation of EVMs, also
02:21known as M3 EVMs, which are designed to be tamper-proof. These machines enter a safety
02:27mode and become inoperable if any tampering attempts are detected, according to the Election
02:32Commission of India. Recently, a dedicated team of professors and prestigious leaders
02:37from IIT have been instrumental in this upgrade of the EVMs. The Election Commission of India
02:44also supported this move. Also, when it comes to the debate over the EVMs, the Supreme Court
02:50of India has already denied any sort of return to the ballot paper. The Supreme Court of
02:55India has also addressed the issue of cross-verification of votes cast on EVMs on paper slip generated
03:00by the VVPAT machine. While rejecting the petition of seeking 100% cross-verification,
03:06the court issued directives to ECI to further strengthen the security and transparency of
03:11the EVM process.
