Thais celebrate Pride ahead of final Senate reading to legalize same-sex marriage

Thailand is set to legalize same-sex marriage as an equality bill heads for the final readings on Tuesday (June 18) in the Southeast Asian country's Senate later this month.

The bill, overwhelmingly passed in its first reading in April, had the support of all of Thailand's major parties and was more than a decade in the making.

A Senate approval would still require the king's endorsement before it becomes law and would take effect 120 days later. If passed, it would make Thailand the only Southeast Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage.

The legislation passed in March was the consolidation of four different draft bills and recognises marriage between two people regardless of gender, rather than a husband and wife as previously defined.

It grants a couple full rights of a married couple under the country's civil and commercial code, including those concerning inheritance and adopting children.
