00:00Agriculture Secretary Francisco T. Laurel and his colleagues are facing the consequences of the reduction of rice prices.
00:12Clayzel Pardilla reported.
00:16In the face of the criticism of various groups of farmers
00:20in the face of the reduction of rice prices, which is said to lead to an increase in imported rice and a decrease in the price of rice that will cause losses to farmers,
00:33the Department of Agriculture Secretary Kiko T. Laurel, Jr. helped the Federation of Free Farmers,
00:40Samahang Industria ng Agrikultura, and other agriculture stakeholders.
00:46In an exclusive interview with PTV in an in-person program, some of them shared their thoughts.
00:54The only question we have now is, I think we feel that this issue is not going to be eased.
01:01It's not going to be long-term. It could be six months, maybe one year.
01:08And maybe after four months, every four months, every quarter, every year.
01:1335% of imported rice was cut.
01:18The National Economic and Development Authority reduced it to 15% until 2028 to lower the price of rice.
01:29But the government insisted that the cut should be abolished.
01:34And President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. appealed.
01:38For now, how many farmers are afraid to give up farming?
01:43They are thinking about whether to farm or not.
01:46Because if the price drops to P17, they might surrender again.
01:54We should have a good discussion.
01:57We should present it to them to explain why 15%.
02:08Why do we need to cut it?
02:10The retail price is not controlled by the importer.
02:13That's what they always say.
02:17In spite of the aforementioned issue,
02:19the Agriculture Department is committed to increasing the production of rice.
02:24The National Irrigation Administration will distribute 1,000 sacks of rice to the Irrigators Association in Cagayan Valley Region.
02:33It will be used in the government's contract-growing program to sell P29 per kilo of rice.
02:41As a preparation for the rainy season,
02:43the Davao Oriental Irrigation Management Office has just completed its work on the Manurigao Communal Irrigation System.
02:52It will help to distribute water in the rainy season
02:55which will provide irrigation to the 55-hectare rice field in Caraga, Davao Oriental.
03:02The National Food Authority has already passed the 3.36 million sack of rice
03:08that was targeted by the agency for the first six months of 2024.
03:13The rice procurement amounted to 3.37 million bags
03:17or equivalent to more than 168,000 metric tons of rice.
03:22This is enough to provide a four-day supply of rice to the entire Philippines
03:28in times of emergency
03:30and in the face of the bad effects of the pandemic.
