Originally from Lubbock, Texas, he found success as a crossover artist, and early in his career he wrote for Elvis Presley, providing him with the hits "Memories", "In the Ghetto", "Don't Cry Daddy. A subsequent career as solo in the 1970s he produced hits such as "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me." Davis also starred in his own variety show, in a Broadway musical and in various films and TV shows. Davis married three times. At 21 years old married Fran Cook of Georgia. Davis then met Sarah Barg, who was then 16 and living in his apartment building with her mother. In 1979, Davis began dating a young nurse, Lise Gerard. Davis died at age 78 on September 29, 2020, following heart surgery.
