Norway pledged to be the world’s first country to stop selling combustion cars by 2025.
This target won’t be met but the EV market share has passed the 90% mark.
“We’re talking so far this year 3% diesel and 4% gasoline,” Oslo’s electro mobility manager Sture Portvik told CGTN.
Stretching all the way to the Arctic - Norway’s roads span thousands of kilometers through rough terrain. This geographical disadvantage is one of the reasons why the country is not likely to meet the self-imposed target of a 100% EV car sales by the end of this year.
“The last 10% that are not buying an EV at the moment are most likely buying a plug-in hybrid,” Portvik says. “Because they have further distances to go, maybe a cabin up in the mountains.”

00:00Norway pledged to be the world's first country to stop selling combustion cars by 2025.
00:06Oslo city officials say this target now won't be met, but the EV market share has passed 90% and it's getting closer.
00:14Our correspondent Johannes Pleschberger reports.
00:18Stretching all the way to the Arctic, Norway's roads span thousands of kilometers through rough terrain.
00:26This geographical disadvantage is one of the reasons why the country is not likely to meet
00:31the self-imposed target of 100% EV car sales by the end of this year.
00:36The last 10% that are not buying an EV at the moment are most likely buying a plug-in hybrid
00:44because they have further distance to go, maybe a cabin up in the mountains.
00:49But this sounds like that in January there still will be combustion cars sold.
00:55There will be a few, but we are talking so far this year 3% diesel, 4% gasoline, so it's not big numbers to put it like that.
01:10It will be some time before Norway's streets are EV only.
01:14But the Scandinavian kingdom remains the world's leader in electric vehicle adoption,
01:20putting it ahead of other big hitters such as Sweden, the Netherlands and China.
01:26Major EV brands from the People's Republic have been promoting their newest models in Norway.
01:32In 2023, Chinese manufacturers made up almost 15% of newly sold cars in the Scandinavian country.
01:41We have sold a lot of Maxxis and built in Norway.
01:45Jacky is also getting better now, so I think it's brilliant with the Chinese cars in Norway.
01:54In Norway, electric vehicles already account for more than 90% market share.
01:59It is still uncertain, however, when they will reach 100%.
