At the 10th annual Bentonville Film Festival on June 15, actors Michaela Watkins (Hulu's 'Casual') and Cassandra Freeman (Peacock's 'Bel-Air') reenacted a classic scene from 'Goodfellas' as part of "Geena and Friends," a yearly showcase of iconically-male movie moments performed onstage by women. Led by festival co-founder and Oscar-winner Davis, the ensemble was rounded out by Saara Chaudry (Disney+'s 'The Mysterious Benedict Society') and Tika Sumpter (Paramount's 'Sonic' movies).

00:55:20a male character and a few years into him selling it I said why don't you just
00:55:24make it a woman like don't change anything about the script make it a
00:55:27woman and he did and now Gina Davis is playing the lead in that movie yes so

00:56:48able to assert herself on set she pushed back against Ridley Scott in moments
00:56:53that didn't feel authentic to her so my question to you is when you saw that
00:56:57modeled for you what was the impact on first of all the decisions you made
00:57:01after that and also just when you think about that moment how has it informed
00:57:06this amazing work you've been doing for now in 20 years well it absolutely
00:57:10changed my life to work with Susan I mean for minute one I was like wow
00:57:15because she she never used qualifiers before she said things like sorry I'm so
00:57:24sorry can I like oh this is probably a stupid idea I might maybe I shouldn't
00:57:29say it but what do you think the question marks at the end and so she
00:57:33just says why don't we do this I was like oh I guess I've never been exposed
00:57:38to a woman who just says what she thinks and so I had a three-month bath in
00:57:46watching someone move through a woman move through the world like that so it
00:57:51really it changed my life and and in fits and starts you know it was really
00:57:58it's not a linear yeah it's not it was not linear at all but but I really got
00:58:04to well actually we got together for the 20th anniversary to defer some a photo
00:58:10shoot or something that we're doing an article and so we we both walk out on
00:58:15the the set where the camera is already set and it's on a tripod and it's really
00:58:21low to the ground that's never good a low shot it's not a good it's not a good
00:58:25angle so so we both walk out there and in unison said could you raise that up
00:58:31and I was like I'm you okay I'm now you I she was like huh but it was a very
00:58:38meaningful moment for me you know that I said what Susan would say yeah that's
00:58:44amazing and and how did Ridley receive this because at the time I mean he was
00:58:48already a giant director and helming really what would become one of the most
00:58:53iconic movies of all time was he receptive to this kind of feedback in
00:58:56that moment oh no he he had absolutely no problem with it nobody reacted like
00:59:05there was anything unusual about Susan everybody loved it what they didn't say
00:59:10well we like Gina better because she's a complete wimp which of course no one
00:59:15thought that about you at the time there was nothing confrontational about it she
00:59:19said let's do this why don't we do this whatever and and he actually is is quite
00:59:25a feminist I mean look at the movie right but his company's almost all run
00:59:33by almost all women he really I mean he decided he was just the producer at
00:59:38first but he decided to direct the movie because he really felt like he
00:59:41understood it which he did and Callie Curry's amazing script we have to give
00:59:46her a shout out and really talk about a trailblazer incredible script thank you
00:59:50for sharing that amazing Tika congratulations on your amazing career
00:59:55and all the wonderful work you've done I first met you at Sundance in 2016 when
00:59:59you were promoting a wonderful film called South Side with you in which she
01:00:03played a young attorney named Michelle Robinson who meets a young charming
01:00:06attorney named Barack Obama very cute movie if you haven't seen it very sweet
01:00:11and it's wild to think how far you've come since then it's been a wild few
01:00:15years so you and Gina have something interesting in common which is that you
01:00:19both started your careers as models and this is an interesting entree to the
01:00:23business there are a lot of examples of people who've had success Sybil
01:00:26Shepard Lauren Hutton and the list goes on but I know that that's not a
01:00:30traditional entree to the business tell me what was most helpful to you in
01:00:35having that background but also what proved to be a hindrance as you tried to
01:00:39have people see you as something other than that person honestly when I mean I
01:00:45grew up in New York and I was just trying to get a job any job that would
01:00:49feed me you know and I wouldn't say I was a I don't call myself a real model
01:00:53like she's actually tall and I was like when I've got on like you know you know
01:00:58you go into like Walmart or Kmart and you see the girl and she's like that
01:01:02that was me it still counts it still counts as my mom would go in and steal
01:01:07them and you know I still have them so that was like kind of my modeling and so
01:01:11but what it did teach me was like you know be open be open to it all right
01:01:17like and especially nowadays I feel like nobody nobody's confined to being just
01:01:22one thing most women especially are actors producers directors writers and
01:01:27sometimes not because they want to be all the things but because it's just
01:01:30necessary you kind of have to know and you have to everybody's all those things
01:01:33and so when when that kind of time rolled around it was like like I
01:01:39produced outside with you and you know there there's something that I'm coming
01:01:43to produce now that's about that's greenlit and it wasn't hard for me to
01:01:48juggle because I'm like I've done it all like I had to do it all I had no choice
01:01:52because I probably learn a lot in that process to again self-adequacy and just
01:01:56making sure that you're always positioned properly and you feel safe
01:02:00and you speak up it's great training actually yeah I mean obviously the
01:02:04longer you get in the business the more confident you become you know because
01:02:08you feel like you can advocate for yourself but yeah I mean it was all
01:02:11really good it's it's all good experience every experience is even when
01:02:14it's tough it's good yeah Michaela congratulations on Suze really it's BFF
01:02:23selection this this week and I'm very partial because I'm your friend but it's
01:02:27really sensational work I can't wait for everyone to see it and you also have
01:02:32something in common with Gina which is you both went to Boston University have
01:02:35you discussed this okay and by the way Boston University is like the most
01:02:38represented school in Hollywood among executives and powerful women we once
01:02:43did a photo shoot at Hollywood Reporter and there were like 60 alumna female
01:02:47alums who had gone to BU so great training from their program well story
01:02:54you you would get your revenge later so I'm not sure if you're familiar with
01:02:59Michaela's background she has an amazing background she studied comedy at the
01:03:03groundlings in Los Angeles and at that point was discovered by SNL and was a
01:03:08cast member on SNL from 2008 to 2009 and then we're not asked to come back after
01:03:13that and I know that's never an easy experience and your friend Casey Wilson
01:03:18also experienced that alongside of you what did you learn from that experience
01:03:22and how did that shape the way you saw your work going forward about what you
01:03:28wanted to do what you don't want to do and what were your biggest lessons
01:03:32learned during that year super easy first of all thanks for plugging Suze of
01:03:39course always but I I would say back to your original thing is I what you were
01:03:47saying Tika is I the biggest thing is no one was going to cast me in the roles I
01:03:53wanted to do because I wasn't Hollywood pretty enough to be leading lady and I
01:03:58wasn't character lady enough to be the really funny lady roles and so I knew
01:04:04that my biggest asset was going to be writing for myself and that's what the
01:04:08groundlings provided me and essentially any for those who aren't familiar every
01:04:12actor who comes out of groundlings also is a writer you can't go through it
01:04:15without also writing your own material if you become a main company member
01:04:18you've definitely gone into you start out with improv and then you do sketch
01:04:22writing and so when SNL didn't invite me back it was it was very it's we all
01:04:30we all have rejection you know in our business we could probably if you had 20
01:04:36hours we probably couldn't even give you the list of all our rejections but to
01:04:40fail that publicly on such a big stage was such a bummer and I also got it late
01:04:47in life because I'm kind of a late bloomer and I I was 30 I was almost 37
01:04:52when I started that show that's the age like two years after people are when
01:04:56they leave the show and they leave to do their future career yeah exactly so it
01:05:01wasn't that I guess I was just like I was already fully cooked at that point
01:05:06and my big thing was I don't want to be known as the woman who was fired from
01:05:11SNL I have to I really and so I really had to humble myself I went back to
01:05:18growlings I went back to buying my own costumes at Goodwill I went back I even
01:05:25took a song improv class which the one thing I couldn't I tried to go back to
01:05:29was waitressing and that just broke my heart too much I took unemployment
01:05:34instead and I didn't one time in my life because I was embarrassed but I I wrote
01:05:44a script with my friend Damon and then we thought well this would be a good
01:05:48pilot let's just see if we can do it and then that became a series called benched
01:05:53and and and then I just started working a lot and I really hadn't stopped after
01:05:58that until the strike it was a tough time yeah a tough time but do you find
01:06:05that Hollywood has a very short memory it's not like anyone is sitting around
01:06:08thinking OMG I cannot believe Lorne Michaels didn't ask Michaela and Casey
01:06:13Wilson to come back for the 2009 season I mean it's people don't even know I was
01:06:18on the show because not because it wasn't a ton of people watching it was
01:06:21after it was right Barack had been elected and Tina Fey and Amy left to go
01:06:26have their baby and so I think it kind of went quiet but just on that note like
01:06:31that is a big thing as a woman I my big worry and this is the last thing I'll
01:06:37say but my big worry was that people would think that I was let go because I
01:06:42was either bad if they didn't watch the show they were like well she must have
01:06:46been bad and I wasn't bad you know or they think she must be difficult to work
01:06:51with because right that's the other thing and I wasn't difficult to work
01:06:54with I was a big big old people pleaser and maybe to a fault but I I would say
01:07:01that that was my fear but we all know it's because I was old okay that's the
01:07:05end of that it's a very political machine over there it's it's really
01:07:11intense we could talk for days just about that process but we love seeing
01:07:14you thrive and we're so glad that you've done the work that you've done because
01:07:17you deserve better so there yes Thank You Michaela and next Souda how are you
01:07:27congratulations for being a relatively young person you have done a lot of work
01:07:31in your life congratulations and you started with one of my favorite people
01:07:36Tony Hale and mysterious Benedict society on Disney plus a wonderful show
01:07:39that I hope people are continuing to discover I wanted to talk to you about
01:07:43something that's been in the news a lot in the last few months which is the
01:07:46quiet on the set docu-series about children and the experiences that
01:07:50they've had in Nickelodeon very important you can stream it on max but
01:07:54it was made by investigation discovery and I wanted to ask you to what degree
01:07:59those anecdotes have resonated with you and if not that's fine they don't need
01:08:03to but I my main question is what do you wish Hollywood better understood about
01:08:07working with young actors and what you need to feel safe and to do your best
01:08:12work I mean I'm not here for the fluff you guys this is this is this is a real
01:08:19stuff I wanted to be quality I wanted I want people to learn something tonight
01:08:24no for sure it's it's an important question I actually started on
01:08:30Nickelodeon my first big thing I guess when I started acting when I was six
01:08:36years old I'm now I just turned 20 but I you're from Canada but I yeah I
01:08:46started when I was six years old and then my first big thing was like theater
01:08:49I did Les Mis at the Princess of Wales in Toronto and then I moved on to a
01:08:55Nickelodeon sitcom called Max and Shred I don't know how much I'm allowed to say
01:09:02all I'll say is that we had a really really wonderful showrunner writer
01:09:08director George who protected us and I think made the decision to make this
01:09:17show on his own for reasons that we now know now that we now know so yeah those
01:09:25stories rang true to a degree definitely not in the same way I had a
01:09:36wonderful support system growing up I think I was definitely one of the lucky
01:09:41ones I had parents that were beyond present and there for me and your mom is
01:09:47here tonight by the way my mom is sitting right there
01:09:49gay moms there she is amazing to have amazing parents who supporting are
01:09:57looking out for you it's really a gift yeah beyond present supportive protective
01:10:03and and did everything in their power to make sure that I was okay and that you
01:10:09know I had somebody to advocate for me unfortunately I did see instances of
01:10:13other child actors not having that privilege not having the right guidance
01:10:18or the right chaperones parents being there for the wrong reasons parents not
01:10:24being there at all and I definitely think there are laws in place now things
01:10:33have changed a lot since then definitely changed and and and and children are far
01:10:39more protected than they ever were but that doesn't mean things are perfect and
01:10:43so to answer your question if I were to say one thing is if you notice that
01:10:50there are children on set that don't have a great support system that don't
01:10:55have parents that are advocating for them or a chaperone or and it doesn't
01:11:00have to be parents just just a grown-up advocating for them be that person on
01:11:06set I had many crew members people who played friends or older siblings or
01:11:13parents on set that like if if you know a parent stepped away for a moment to
01:11:18take a work call or whatever advocated for me were there looking out for me and
01:11:23they were a part of that village too and so I think it's just about stepping in
01:11:29when when you notice if you're a part of that village if you're a part of that
01:11:32community make sure that you're one of those people that is looking out for
01:11:35kids on set and don't be afraid to say something I think there's so much like
01:11:38oh it's not my business that's family business I'd always are on the side of
01:11:41asking if I sound pushy then fine but sort of if you see something say
01:11:45something this is true and I had parents that like were the opposite of set
01:11:48parents like my mom's a lawyer she doesn't care she was like if I wanted to
01:11:52quit tomorrow she she would be like okay great let's figure it out what do you
01:11:55want to do now but you know there were instances for sure where things weren't
01:12:01a hundred percent right and and you know there were nerves about looking like a
01:12:07stage mom or appearing difficult overbearing or looking over protective
01:12:13and difficult on behalf of your child but there were people in these rooms
01:12:18that advocated on our behalf that we love and appreciate so I think it's just
01:12:26about making sure that there are those allies on set I'm figuring out who those
01:12:29people are that is so great and I really haven't heard that many people
01:12:32articulate that point so thank you for that very helpful and Cassandra
01:12:37congratulations to you you've had it quite a varied career in a relatively
01:12:40short time you've been on Atlanta Blue Bloods Luke Cage the last OG Bel Air
01:12:45that's a wide range you have not been typecast as far as I can tell but I do
01:12:50want to ask about that because I once had a conversation with the amazing
01:12:54Viola Davis about being typecast and what that feels like and how hard it is
01:12:58to break out of a mold that may be within your six you're succeeding and
01:13:03people oh she's really good at that let's keep her in that space so I'd
01:13:07love to know have you experienced that and if so how have you advocated for
01:13:11yourself to break free of those feelings and if not what has been your experience
01:13:16I guess to the contrary you know it's funny I think I'm in some ways I have
01:13:39not been typecast and you know it's so funny when I began my career like in
01:13:44high school and undergrad I was always the prostitute the maid the prostitute
01:13:50mate and so I remember when I finally went off to grad school I auditioned for
01:13:53Yale and NYU and I remember when I walked into Yale they were like so
01:13:58prostitutes and maids what do you think this says about your talent and I said I
01:14:02think it says I live in Florida and I really I mean even when we did comedy of
01:14:10era it's like a Shakespeare play I still played loose the maid I was like
01:14:14how y'all do this so by the time I got to NYU I think I have to plug NYU grad
01:14:20school because they did such a great job of allowing me to be as expansive even
01:14:26more expansive than I even saw myself and so by the time I went off into the
01:14:31real world the truth is my auditions are very much typecast but the truth is the
01:14:35way you play the game in Hollywood is you have to play what you look like okay
01:14:40and you know I think Val Davis is a very beautiful woman absolutely I think I
01:14:45positioned myself to just be like oh I'm wearing lipstick and I have my hair like
01:14:49this but if the world doesn't want that I go in with my hair looking different
01:14:53you know and I think I can look I look so different in the way I do my hair and
01:14:59my makeup you wouldn't even I mean even on Bel Air the director the executive
01:15:03producers will be like hey how you doing Cassie this is you I'm like I know
01:15:07it's crazy but though the way I advocate for myself is from the very beginning in
01:15:14my career you know I play the roles that feel like would be cool to do and I
01:15:19remember when Atlanta showed up that was the first season and the people who
01:15:23repped me at that time they were like Donald Glover there's something in
01:15:26Atlanta what is this I don't think anyone knew what that show would become
01:15:29exactly but if you watched Donald Glover's music videos at that time they
01:15:36were stupendous they were artistic and I said are y'all not looking at the bread
01:15:42crumbs and so when I went down to do so when I got that role I was like no this
01:15:46is where I feel like I've been very lucky to work with people who have like
01:15:49a beautiful artistic eye even in the independent films I've done that gone
01:15:54off to all these film festivals but at the end of the day I think I'm a great
01:15:57advocate for myself because my agents I tell them all the time like you know
01:16:02what season we're in right now we're in the season where I want to play so
01:16:05Bel-Air only came because after I did like for life and something else I was
01:16:10playing these very strong like women but they had no sexuality and I feel like
01:16:15black women get trapped in this box where we're not even a woman we do flip
01:16:20a lot of times if it's a male role they'll give it to the black woman and
01:16:23be like play this role and now you're a lesbian and we're gonna her name's not
01:16:27Nick it's Nikki now and but still wear pants and don't wear too much makeup and
01:16:33you're like uh-uh so by the time so anyway I say my career is about me
01:16:39calling my people I said don't send me another judge lawyer cop we're not doing
01:16:43anything like that the sort of the wise black woman advisor the counselor the
01:16:47this has become and it's a great typecasting little pod but it's also
01:16:52after a while absolutely so but I think the whole message is you have to tell
01:16:56you people what you want to go out for cuz listen he just don't have enough
01:16:59bandwidth to be like you can be anything and so you have to be like listen so I
01:17:03literally told my people I really want this is the stupidest thing someone kind
01:17:08of rich who just thinks about their life like existential stuff you know and and
01:17:13she just and she wears beautiful clothes and kind of sexy and then Bel-Air showed
01:17:18up and I said yeah but not on the not that and so they had to convince me even
01:17:24on this because I was like I'm not on but the producers for that show had such
01:17:27an expansive view of even how she is so I just talk and then just don't audition
01:17:31I think that's the thing that's the only way you can advocate you for yourself
01:17:34things come in you'd be like I don't even have the energy I don't have the
01:17:37energy and there are other things I can do I talked to Nisi Nash about this last
01:17:42year and she has a wonderful trajectory and starting in a very goofy show Reno
01:17:469-1-1 but desperately wanted to be seen as a dramatic actor and they refused to
01:17:51even see her for dramatic roles and she said something that has really stuck
01:17:55with me which is something she said to the casting directors of the specific
01:17:59HBO series called getting on in which she's in my opinion done her best work
01:18:03and won an Emmy she said I invite you to see me differently so that's what she
01:18:08said to the casting directors can you just imagine Nisi and her like regal
01:18:12delivery I love that concept and I think it's something that each of us can
01:18:16take into our work and it's aggressive but it's very polite like I invite you
01:18:20to stop pigeon-holing me in you know such-and-such role people don't always
01:18:24know you want to play other things they really don't so every time I've ever
01:18:28said anything people are like really you want to be funny yeah can I go that's
01:18:33why the last OG comes I cannot be something funny now they don't know you
01:18:36have to speak up is really what this well yeah you know what I said one time
01:18:42when I got a script and I look I read it and I sent it back to the writer I sent
01:18:48it back to my agents and I said I want to be offered a role that if it was
01:18:57being offered to Zach Galifianakis the writer wouldn't be embarrassed to offer
01:19:02it to Zach Galifianakis and that was a game-changer because I feel like writers
01:19:08were just like oh well a woman can do this it's not really thought out and if
01:19:12they asked us a question about the this character we wouldn't really understand
01:19:16or know because we hadn't put that much thought in it because it's the woman
01:19:19character but you would never hand that to Zach Galifianakis for example and say
01:19:24like here you go it's a really thin character idea that's a trope have fun
01:19:30you know it would be like funny on the page and I was like bring it funny on
01:19:35the page to women you know yes amen yes so I have a closing question for
01:19:44everyone which is and for all the kind of mostly centered and directed at the
01:19:48filmmakers in the room and what what is one actionable thing that each artist in
01:19:52this room today or someone who's attended the festival this week can do
01:19:55when they get to set or when they're writing something or having cursory
01:20:00meetings about a new project to create gender equity on set what is something
01:20:04that every person can do that's small that's scalable that's a quick fix that
01:20:09doesn't involve weeks and weeks and months and months of meetings Michaela
01:20:12what would you suggest can you can you say that question one more sure what is
01:20:16something that artists in this room and anyone who's been the festival can do
01:20:20with their work to create gender equity on set whether to your point in the
01:20:25script stage right like whether it's seen direction the way a character is
01:20:29described or I remember Ava DuVernay told me something that made me laugh
01:20:33she said nothing makes me happier than a woman with a tool belt on a ladder yeah
01:20:36on set like the idea that you walk onto a set and you see Wow I've never seen a
01:20:41person who looks like that doing that job I think if you're in a position to
01:20:44have some power or say or you've got it you know your chum chum maru with the
01:20:48producers etc I think that you advocate for a female crew like you keep
01:20:54recommending I know a great woman who can do this or non-binary or trans person
01:20:59who can do this I know somebody who can do this I know someone who could do this
01:21:02and then you just like fill up the crew and the other thing I would say is back
01:21:10up the people that are on set like for example if Cassidy said something and I
01:21:16could tell it was getting missed I would be like wait wait wait that's a really
01:21:19great idea and then it just if you get two people it doesn't matter saying
01:21:26something then suddenly because there's this like weird little sound barrier
01:21:32that women's voices can sometimes fall into where it just sounds like
01:21:35silverware clacking together but it's actually us talking
01:21:44this reminds me of something Amy Schumer once said which is I don't think
01:21:50we'll ever elect a woman president because it just reminds us of our mom
01:21:53yelling at us and I think she's not totally off the mark with them so I
01:21:57think it speaks to this like yammering oh what is she saying now oh her mouth
01:22:00is moving so listen when people speak on set yeah and that's a great point and if
01:22:05you notice somebody's not being heard no even if you don't agree with it doesn't
01:22:09matter make sure they're being heard there's a power I think it's hard
01:22:16because there's a huge power imbalance you know if you don't if you're most
01:22:20people who are not number one two three and four they can't really speak up for
01:22:27like they they're like I'm keeping my job right so if you are you do have the
01:22:32power to do that I would say do that but I do want to give paramount like a
01:22:37really good like a shout out because when I was cast in Sonic they asked me
01:22:43to come read and it became a huge hit you know the after the first one like
01:22:49nobody knew it was gonna happen became a hit and they asked me to come back for
01:22:53the second one and I said I was close enough with the producers where I said
01:22:56please don't make me pregnant on the phone the whole time that for number two
01:22:59and three and they were like they laughed they were like oh I said yeah I
01:23:04don't want to be on the phone the whole time and I don't want to be pregnant
01:23:06please let me be part of the action and they wrote it the writers this is of
01:23:11course a Jim Carrey franchise like this is big budget big money Marsden like
01:23:15yeah and Sonic really he's like the guy and so what I will say is they they
01:23:20listened and also just I think it trickles down from the top the way
01:23:24people are being treated so if the top isn't doing the correct things it's all
01:23:28gonna trickle down so I think it's up to the people who hold the weight of saying
01:23:33I'm producing I'm leading all these things to really help carry in the rest
01:23:37of the people agree which is why we need more women in those c-suites and and
01:23:42producing these movies so anyone else have anything to add you don't have to
01:23:45feel pressured because this those have been both very always fine if you go
01:23:49back before it even gets the set I remember I had a producer friend of mine
01:23:52who a director producer who called me up and he was in trouble at this time and
01:23:58the press got wind that he was doing a project that was about one community but
01:24:01it looked like that community and also no one on the team looked like that you
01:24:05know one of them kind of things and he's like Cassie what do you think about this
01:24:09and I said well let me think you called your friend's husband's wife because
01:24:15that's the only person you know outside of your circle that is very white male
01:24:20you know and so I started this company called Creatricity and the whole point
01:24:24is if you don't have a Rolodex like reach out to find a bigger Rolodex so I
01:24:30think before the script even gets to the producers it I mean what we do it so
01:24:34naturally all of us when we were working on this I don't know why women are so
01:24:38good being like does this make sense that I wish I wish men just did one
01:24:43extra footstep of before we send this off let one woman and maybe one person
01:24:49of interesting color anything and say does this seem too one-sided because we
01:24:56did this stuff up here on the stage today and it seems ridiculous right
01:25:05it's a great point have someone just have someone take a pass to just say hey
01:25:10is there anything problematic in this script is there are there any red flags
01:25:13absolutely Gina do you want to offer anything and you don't have to but
01:25:16yes so it really is my friends have been saying it it is a lot about where you
01:25:23are on the on the call sheet but I'm talking about actors so but if you are
01:25:30one two or three you you can plan ahead and look at it and let's say you're
01:25:39going to give a speech and and a few days before something say would it is it
01:25:46okay if the if the people I'm speaking to my workers or whoever are half female
01:25:52and very diverse and there's some people with disabilities in there and
01:25:57you know all that so and because extras it's the easiest thing but it doesn't
01:26:03happen in real life like there was there was a scene in Stuart Little this is way
01:26:09before I had an Institute or anything but there was a remote control boat race
01:26:14and I happen to be watching the assistant director setting up the kids
01:26:20that were and so he'd pick a little boy out of the group of extras and have him
01:26:25sit down with a remote and then he'd pick a little girl to stand behind that
01:26:29boy and be his cheerleader and one boat and he kept giving the remotes to boys
01:26:35so I said hey what do you think if we gave half of the remotes to girls and he
01:26:41went yes yes oh my god and switched it and but but you know that stuff is so
01:26:55easy but we all have such incredible unconscious bias that you know it
01:27:02doesn't happen so so that's so things that may seem obvious to us may not be
01:27:06to someone else so don't be afraid to even just make a polite suggestion it's
01:27:10sort of like you're not casting blame it's more like hey what if we did X
01:27:14which it sounds like that's what you did another I think my you know fellow
01:27:18panelists here have said really great things about things on the early stages
01:27:22and and development side of things we were talking about this today write it
01:27:27into your contract there's like an extra layer of protection where it's like hey
