Gang of thieves smash into California jewelry store using sledgehammers; A group of about 20 people used sledgehammers to rob a California jewelry store Wednesday afternoon, according to surveillance footage obtained by The National Desk. They broke through the doors to PNG Jewelers in the city of Sunnyvale before smashing rows of display cases and stuffing jewelry into their bags. The robbery lasted roughly two-and-a-half minutes. The suspects fled the scene as police arrived, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Some officers unsuccessfully tried to use their cars to stop two vehicles escaping but engaged in a highway chase shortly after, they said.

Police purportedly lost sight of one of the cars, though other officers pursued a second vehicle down the highway as the suspects threw the stolen jewelry out of it. The robbers eventually abandoned the car and ran across the freeway and into a nearby industrial area, according to the agency. With the help of a police dog, officers arrested Tonga Latu, Tavake Esafe, Ofa Ahomana, Kilifi Leaaetoa and Afuhia Lavakeiaho. The five suspects are facing charges for armed robbery, felony vehicle evasion, resisting arrest, burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, vandalism and possession of burglary tools.
